The Official Gerard Butler Love Thread

Posted: 8/9/05 at 5:51pmI believe it's said when he's reading the obituary that his father died and left Frankie. I think he said something like he had thought for awhile that his dad wasn't there and that The Stranger hadn't been. I only saw the movie twice. Going to buy it soon.

Wicked? Lol...usually I get called wrq which I don't mind, but if you call me Wicked, you can just call me Amanda
As for Frankie...I don't think there's a clear-cut answer for that. I think it's up to interpretation. I agree that he kinda knew all along, I remember he hesitated when accepting Gerry as his father, I looked back and thought he realized whoever this was was being a good person and someone he could like, even though he wasn't his dad, you know?
I suppose lip reading could be it, I kinda like to think he just instinctively knew after awhile. Or maybe a part of him knew but a part of him still wanted to believe and between being with Gerry and reading his dad's obituary, he accepted the truth?
Aww, haven't seen it since the one time in April...I gotta rent it if not buy it soon.

He sorry about that. I was writing when I was really tired so shortening it sort of in a weird way. I was also debating with someone on another board and I was still trying to find logic. Kind of funny how that works.
I agree it is open to interpretation. And I think that Frankie probably knew after The Stranger left and he wrote either the one last letter or two can't remember. I do think though that he knew before he read his father's obituary in the newspaper that the stranger wasn't really his father only he wished it. And damn I wished the entire time that he was. At least then everyone would have been happier(meaning Lizzie would have had someone and Frankie would have had a father) in the end. So that's my only which, but I do like the movie though. It's such a sweet piece.

I was watching POTO today and it's the first time I've seen the movie since finishing the book and now I really can't look at Erik/Phantom in the same way anymore. I swear I feel so bad for him at the end of the movie and sense the loneliness in him. I was thinking about how the ended the movie with Raoul still seeing the rose and ring there and if we're going by how either one of the stories end, then how is it that Erik is still alive? Also just kind of makes me giggle that in the movie whenever they show the older Raoul and Madame Giry how Raoul is more of a geriatric than Madame Giry and requires a wheelchair when he is quite a bit younger than her. Okay I'm on a weird Phantom spree. I'm trying to get my boyfriend to read Phantom.
Have you read Masquerade by Terry Pratchett? In case you haven't it's a parody of POTO. Still trying to start it. But it's funny so far though.

Hmm no havent' read that. Suppose I can look into it.
But yes, I told you you cannot view the movie the same way after reading the book!! When you know how really emotional and meaningful that kiss was for him...how his mother refused him one when he was 4, how he couldn't even kiss her dead corpse, how Christine was the image...it was amazing. And as soon as he breaks into his mother's fear and loathing, tears came. It's just so great. Also, go back and watch no one would listen, that's more meaningful as well.
As for the Raoul thing, it does make more sense after reading the book that he would look older than Madame Giry, he says in the final chapter that he is 30 but looks at least 50 or something along those lines.
The Phantom death thing...I'm still not sure. Obviously this is not following her book, as Christine died much later in life than she did in the book, so you look at bits and pieces. The more I thought about it, the more I like to think of him as not alive, that maybe Madame Giry put it there on behalf of him--maybe she was trying to gbet the monkey for the same purpose. Because I like the idea of the two of them together in death, and if you view it the right way, the movie can support Raoul's statement that Christine belonged to him in life, but Erik in death. Now they are together.
And as far as dear frankie, I accidentally read a review that outright stated in the beginning that "the stranger" was the friend's brother, so that was kinda ruined as a surprise, though I didn't mind, knowing that the whole time made me adore him more. As if I need to adore my Gerry anymore

Damn I must be tired if I forgot about what Raoul had said about looking older. Okay that does make a little more sense. Thanks!
I swear that book changes your whole viewing of the musical. It's not that I like the musical any less it's just it makes me think of the story behind or before what happens in the musical. I think from reading the book you follow Erik through his journey through the minds of various people and while he does kill people he's not any less human. He's thought of as a monster and not as a human being, but reading Phantom actually makes you see the human side of him. It makes me so sad that people can dislike or hate anyone that much.
In the musical and I guess in the book Erik seems to not like himself. And "this face, the infection which poisons our love" is a double entandre(sorry can't spell today). But in Leoux's version Erik uses his disfigurement to his advantage. It seemed that in Leoux's he didn't kill out of necessity like in Kay's but because he got pleasure from it? I could be wrong.
Although I have to say that the placement of Buquet's death in the musical is interesting. I think just because the original after the introduction the first thing mentioned is Buquet and how he died. Which in the original is looked to be intentional whereas in Phantom it was an accident because Buquet somehow found himself in the maze/laberinth.
I still maintain that the "emblem" thing in the carriage that Raoul rides in at the beginning is a bag of Ruffles chips.

On the contrary, I think Kay's book made me like the musical more. From the first day I saw it, Raoul bored me and I was so sad that Raoul got her and that the Phantom was left all alone, etc. Going from that day till now I see the whole story a lot more positively for him. Like the whole idea that Christine's with him in death, and that kiss meant more to her than just a way to save Raoul, etc.
Ehh, I only read the original once before I read Kay's book, and I've read that 3 other times, so I'm not quite sure if I remember it correctly, but wasn't it an accident in the original novel as well? I think it's the same story where he ended up in the torture chamber by following Erik, then Erik found him, and made it look like a suicide because he looked so pathetic anyway or something along those lines...

I like the musical still too. I like the movie better than the time I saw it onstage, but then there was more chemistry in the movie than onstage. I don't know why. Just kind of weird.
I don't remember from the original so maybe I came to the assumption that it wasn't an accident. Or maybe I just remembered wrong.
I like to think that Christine and Erik end up together in death. I mean it's only fitting and works quite well. He understood her perfectly and made her voice soar. Heck he made it so Charlotta co-acked so Christine could go on. Raoul wouldn't do that. While he might not have liked Charlotta he never said as the patron that she couldn't perform, but whatever.
I agree though Raoul did bore me the first time I saw it.
#184Well we're talking about phantom again so might as well change title
Posted: 8/13/05 at 2:16am
Now why would you think there is chemistry in the movie? Just b/c the phantom is the love of this thread...
Don't think the chemistry w/ Emmy and Patrick was that great...though I wonder if it's supposed to be with the character. I mean w/ Erik's relationship to Christine being so sexual, Raoul's always seemed maybe not completely asexual but moreso, more about marriage and love than sex, which means she should have more chemistry with Erik...but who wouldn't melt if he was singing MOTN or PONR to them? I certianly would.
In my eyes, since it's the most complete and the one I like best, Kay's phantom is the true story. So of course they're together in death and had a son. And the idea that she kept those roses everyday...tears in my eyes thinking about it. And just Erik's son having his father's skills and feeling the same way about looks, except he is gorgeous, so to be able to feel that way still...just such an amazing story.
#185Well we're talking about phantom again so might as well change title
Posted: 8/13/05 at 2:44pm
Well I didn't think Patrick's and Emmy's chemistry was that good, but the chemistry between Emmy and Gerard was a lot better. Especially in PONR. Minus the dancers in the background that is still one of my favorite scenes. Oh just love that scene. I know really weird, but cool.
I agree though since Kay's is the most complete and doesn't have as many gaps I tend to like it a lot more. Although some of the stories are a bit long. My favorite was Giovanni. At least the ones of the story that weren't told from Erik's or Christine's perspectives. That was my favorite.

Thanks, soo meant to bump this but kept forgetting, bad me.
Got the Dear Frankie DVD from the library.
Watched it w/ my mom who loved it, then watched all the features including the movie through w/ commentary. Fun Gerry day, he looks soo good in that jacket. The director talks about how he perfectly had the right mix between leading man, chemistry w/ Lizzie and had really sweet scenes w/ the kid so pulled it off wonderfully. Emilie or whoever talked about how she got to kiss Gerry 18 times, I threw something very hard at her through the TV. Such a great movie. His acting skills are just so varied IMO, my mom kept saying she can't believe how much of an accent he has and how it's not at all obvious through the Phantom movie.
I...just...loooooove...him.

Posted: 8/29/05 at 1:09amIt is obvious in some parts of Phantom but less so than in Dear Frankie. Sooner or later I'm going to buy it and make my parents watch it. I love that movie so much. I liked the movie in general and I liked Emily Mortimer's haircut. I said if I could get away with it I would cut it like that but I don't think I'd be able to. I love that movie. I didn't get to watch all of the features that go with it, but eventually I will.
#192Hello.

Okay...class started again, bleh, but I'm managing so far. Funny story where I hate cats w/ a passion my sisters have them but my sis has a new kitten that well must be a dog in a cat's body. She went on vacation so he stayed w/ me and he's adorable and always wants to cuddle and doesn't scratch me, so since she has another cat, I am going to convince everyone to let me keep him. But see she named him Mikey after Mike Piazza, a Met, eww. So when he's mine, his name will be...Gerry!
Went to Gerry's site recently, no new news. Once again considered writing a fan letter but I can never think of something perfect enough or worthy enough for him. Ulgh.
Past the point of no return...ooh.

Well, here I am bumping again, b/c actually, I was tellng one of my friends all about Gerry, went to imdb to get a list of his films, and realized I never read his biography from there. Some very interesting tidbits:
"While filming [Mrs. Brown] in Scotland, he was enjoying a picnic with his mother, near the River Tay, when they heard the shouts of a young boy who had been swimming with a friend who was in some trouble. Butler jumped in and consequently saved the young boy from drowning. He received a "Certificate of Bravery" from the Royal Humane Society. He felt he only did what anyone in the situation would have done."
"On the first day of shooting his film debut in Mrs. Brown (1997) he had to bound naked into a freezing sea and as a result developed hypothermia"
Aww, I love that scene...but poor baby.
"His eyes are grey/green in color but often appear blue on screen."
"Rumored to be the next James Bond (after Pierce Brosnan). [April 2001]"
Hrmph, if that was 2001, that means it's prob not gonna come to pass? That would be awesome...
"Cried whilst talking about the Phantom's loneliness to The Phantom of the Opera (2004) director Joel Schumacher."
Aww!
"Jokes about preferring the mask side of his face to the regular side of his face."
"He has quickly gained a reputation as one of the nicest actors around, as he always takes time to socialize with fans and hangs out with crew members as much as co-stars on film sets."

With everything that's going on for poor Gerry and crazy fans and conventions with his mom, let's give Gerry some normal fan love! BUMP!
Dear Frankie was one night, I only caught the last bit of it. I wonder if Game of Their Lives is available on DVD around here?
#201Upcoming projects
Posted: 10/11/06 at 5:23pm
Figured it was time to bump this with updates on upcoming projects Gerry is working on.
"300" has completed filming and is scheduled to be released in theatres on March 9, 2007. Here's a synopsis of the film:
"Based on the epic graphic novel by Frank Miller, 300 is a ferocious retelling of the ancient Battle of Thermopylae in which King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fought to the death against Xerxes and his massive Persian army. Facing insurmountable odds, their valor and sacrifice inspire all of Greece to unite against their Persian enemy, drawing a line in the sand for democracy. The film brings Miller's (Sin City) acclaimed graphic novel to life by combining live action with virtual backgrounds that capture his distinct vision of this ancient historic tale."
http://300themovie.warnerbros.com/ is the official website. You can see a couple of trailers and there is also a video blog.
Filming has completed on "Butterfly For A Wheel" and the film will be released sometime in 2007. It stars Gerry along with Pierce Brosnan. Synopsis:
"Chicago residents Neil (played by Butler) and Abby Warner (played by Bello) have a perfect marriage and a worry-free life. However, when their daughter Sophie gets kidnapped, their lives are thrown into chaos as they are forced to comply with the kidnapper's demands. The kidnapper is Ryan (played by Brosnan), who is a dangerously-efficient sociopath who feels like he has nothing to lose.
For the next twenty-four hours, Neil and Abby have no choice but to comply with Ryan's demands, and it soon becomes apparent that money is not the object -- in exchange for Sophie, Ryan wants them to kill an innocent man"
Filming is currently taking place for P.S. I Love You, based on the well-known novel. Hilary Swank stars. Unfortunately, Gerry's dead from the beginning of this one but is still an integral part of the movie:
" A young widow discovers that her late husband has left her 10 messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life"
Aww. James Marsters of Buffy is going to play his friend. The film should be released sometime in 2008.
Next, "Therese Raquin" is in preproduction, awaiting filming. This movie stars Glenn Close as a character the synopsis does not describe and Giovanni Ribsi as Camille:
"Therese and her lover Laurent(Gerry) murder Camille, Therese's husband. After marrying, the couple are visited by Camille's ghost, slowly turning their love for one another into an all-consuming hatred."
This may be late 2008.
Finally, Gerry is in negotiations for "Priest" Synopsis:
"A priest (Butler) disobeys church law to track down the vampires who kidnapped his niece. "
I guess the Dangerous Liasons remake never panned out. He would have been great in that...
But anyway he is quite busy and I'm so excited he'll be sharing the screen with such talented actors, and playing a huge variety of characters--evil, benevolent, dead, etc. More ways to show off his amazing talent.
