MyNameinLights has a new avatar! (I actually don't think I've ever seen that picture before - it's adorable.) I had to bring my Diva back for a bit - so non-committal!
I'm halfway ashamed to admit that The Normal Heart last May was really the first time I ever saw this guy in person. He was out with that vocal injury when Cara and I saw Taboo. (Speaking of which, I'm in the middle of Boy George's Take It Like a Man now, and I absolutely adore the way he describes Phillip; I can just picture Raúl flouncing around like that.) Completely unforgettable for a lot of reasons, and from the first second I saw him on that stage, I knew there wasn't anyone like him - an absolute whirlwind of talent.
As for the Tony, or lack thereof, I had been thinking about it a bit before the nominations came out. The name of the award/category is "best
performance by a leading actor in a musical," and I guess that's where he got screwed. It's not "best actor." It has nothing to do with how much he's blown people away in the past, but only what he's doing right now, which is... well, I guess less than his absolute potential, unfortunately. I refuse to place all blame on him, because I like to make up excuses - I think most of it is the part.
Had The Normal Heart transferred, that would've been his Tony.
(Oh, and I see my Cara today!! hee.)
A work of art is an invitation to love.
