He does seem really warm. It was really sweet when he said that he was *afraid* of what would come of bringing Sweeney to Broadway. I admire that he doesn't approach his work as a pretentious "form" but more simply just as... the way he does his work.

I'm confused. Was that a joke, or was someone seriously signing Raul's name?
I've only seen Doyle's work for Sweeney, but I fell in love with him the night of the second preview. Patti LuPone introduced him as the director and I started applause for him at the stage door. I'll never forget it. She said "yes, absolutely. He deserves a round of applause." and began clapping for him. I realized how thrilled eeryone was to work with him. I asked her if she thought he would mind it if I introduced myself to him. She goes "oh, he would love it!" so I timmidly walked over there to shake his hand. He was so sweet, and so proud of his work and his actors. He talked and talked and talked, and answered any questions we had. Of course, most of them were about that damn white coffin. He was holding a boquet of roses, and finally he goes "I hope you will excuse me, I'm taking my wife to dinner." and proceded to hand her the roses. I was smitten.
Nobody was signing Raul's name. Mano just thinks he's funny.
Meh, double post.
Me? Yes indeed!
Today while I was at the library, I happened across the 1993 BC/EFA benefit reading of The Normal Heart on CD. I didn't realize that that existed, so I was pleasantly surprised to find it. It's pretty interesting -- Stockard Channing does quite well as Emma. Eric Bogosian is so, so different as Ned than Raul was that it's strange to listen to him... it's definitely interesting to hear different people in the roles, though.

Are you a Stockard Channing fan, Ash? I think she's such an incredibly brilliant actress. I'm not familiar with her voice beyond Grease -- while the show is definitely campy, I always enjoyed her singing There Are Worse Things I Could Do. Her rendition is so emotionally powerful and haunting.
Sorry that this isn't exactly on-topic...
I love Stockard Channing. The Normal Heart is a straight play though, so there's no singing. Anyway, I really liked her on that recording... there were some scenes where I think I preferred her Emma to Joanna Gleason's.
It's no less on-topic than my bringing up the CD in the first place, so you're fine.

Heh, I saw "CD" and "The Normal Heart" and underinformed me didn't put them together. Anyway, this is probably quite a strange statement, but her speaking voice is wonderful as well. You know how there are some people who you won't mind listening to talk for hours? She's one of them for me. I think I had a few books on tape read by her as a child -- maybe it stems from that.
Such a brilliant woman.
Clearly, we do!
"Have you got any German in you of any kind?"
"No."
"Would you like one?"

ss, your avatar makes me smile. I find the pink rectangle so intriguing; it looks like the 1(or whatever that is) has a pink aura emanating from within.
That ad-lib.... aaaah.

Was that really an adlib? I thought it was part of the show...?

Me too. I thought that was one of the "standard jokes."
Hm. Well, they were each free to ad-lib, and a lot of them got passed down and used by whoever followed. So a lot of Alan's jokes that you hear on the CD were his ad-libs, but they ended up getting passed down all the way to Adam.
Yeah, they are standard, but they changed throughout the run, and I think different Emcees introduced new ones of their own that, as Em mentioned, get passed down. I used quotations marks!

I finally watched Cabaret (movie) yesterday! I couldn't help but think of, you know, the subject of this thread throughout.
Especially during the mud fight. I almost burst out laughing.

WHY isn't Raul on the Broadway Under the Stars lineup, and an even bigger who can he play in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas?!
I can't go this year, but where did they post the lineup? I'm curious anyway, since it'll be on tv.
