Let's compile a list of movies you believe to be still in contention for a Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Then we will shrink the list down to five.

List of contenders (edited daily):

Closer
Eternal Sunshine
Finding Neverland
Kill Bill Vol. 2
Million Dollar Baby
Ray
Sideways
The Aviator
The Phantom of the Opera
The Terminal

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST will not be nominated for best picture. It will be nominated for a Golden Globe (and lose) but it has no shot at the Oscars.

Take the Pizzle of the Crizzle off the list. I doubt it will be nominated nor do I think it should be.

(The moves listed I have not seen yet, except for THE TERMINAL. I will take it down but if others include it, it goes back up.)

Hmmm....why do you guys think that about Passion of the Christ? I think it WILL be nominated, just because Gibson has made it so public that he's NOT GOING PUBLIC to campaign for a nomination...That, and the fact that it's Domestic Total Gross is $370,274,604.

The movie was garbage, though. It was a self indulgent piece of mediocre crap.

Eternal or Passion?

I loved Eternal Sunshine and I think once again Mr. Carrey will be snubbed at nomination time.

Kill Bill 2?

No way in hell with POTC be nominated. WAAAY too polarizing, especially within Hollywood.

Though I think Mr. Carrey was quite wonderful, it was actually a little too subtle of a performance...especially in an outstanding year for actors.

But the movie SHOULD be nominated. So achingly moving...I was stunned by it.

Jim Carrey should ABSOLUTELY be nom'd for ...SUNSHINE! I usually can't stomach him, but I thought he was bloody brilliant.

You missed the fantastic one I had last night, with MJ's face and Pamela Anderson's bod. Awesome. And deleted. (Natch.)

I saw that one, Tiff. Horrifying. :P

Anyway, put Sideways in the list, too. Alexander Payne rocks.

Borstal,

It's not that I don't think he deserves to be nom'd...I just don't think it will happen this year with this crop of actors vying for the spots.

Though I'm waaaaaay behind in my moviegoing so I haven't seen a few of the contenders, I did want to say that, of what I HAVE seen, Eternal Sunshine was by far the best experience I had at a movie this year (and perhaps in the last couple of years). Don't know if its too small a film to do much at the Oscars, but I'm rooting for it.

What about SPIDER-MAN 2? Does anyone think this could possibly get nominated? It's not the type of movie you think of as being the best, but I thought it was one of the better films of the year.

It wasn't that good. There are too many other quality movies out this year for that to be nominated.
