Sadly, he won't. I would love for DiCaprio to win. Again, anyone but overrated Foxx.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Munkustrap-

You have to understand that when I judge movies, I judge them separately (as dramas and comedies). For example, I would never consider Lindsay Lohan ("Mean Girls") or Alicia Silverstone ("Clueless") for Oscars. However, I think both deserved nods in Best Actress (Musical/Comedy). Yes, I included both "Mean Girls" and "Clueless" on my top 10 lists for their respective years, and I'm sure other critics did as well. Is it possible for a movie to be so fresh and entertaining that it transcends the "confines" of the genre?

I completely disagree about Murray. As I've said before, his performance was funny without trying to be, touching, and complex. Maybe I found something in "Life Aquatic" that no one else did? Who knows?

As for Heder... Those who voted/nominated Johnny Depp for Best Actor in 2003 (for "Pirates of the Caribbean") did so because he created a memorable character. I believe that Jon Heder did the same.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Since I've only seen six of the thirty nominated movies this year, I am truly only able to participate by watching the drama unfold. But I have to say, from all I've seen and heard, I'll be shocked if Mr. Foxx doesn't win.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

see, maybe its just me, but when i saw The Aviator, all I could think about was Titanic. This happened with all of DiCaprio's movies I've seen.
But Johnny Depp always makes a new, memorable character.
I agree, Jamie Foxx was overrated.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

You can also say that Ben Affleck created a memorable role in GIGLI.

Jennifer Lopez created a memorable role in SELENA.

Come on - every performance can be memorable in it's own way. Memorable isn't a way to judge if they're Oscar worthy. Judging movies separately is fine (although I don't understand why,) but when it comes to the Oscars they all have to be judged together. Depp's performance in PIRATES was beyond "memorable" - it was deeply layered, smart, and just brilliant acting.

I think he should have won for Pirates. definately.

Haha thanks, Sally, but I don't think he should have WON. Did you see MYSTIC RIVER?

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Munkustrap, that's just the way I feel. I also disagree about Depp's performance in "Pirates". He was funny, but I wouldn't call it brilliant or layered. If he can get an Oscar nomination for that, than so can Heder. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

"You can also say that Ben Affleck created a memorable role in GIGLI."

Say what?

"Jennifer Lopez created a memorable role in SELENA."

She was great in that movie. What more is there to say?

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

You were judging the basis for an Oscar nomination on being solely "Memorable." By your criteria, Affleck and Lopez fall into that category. So do Will Ferrell in ELF, Ben Stiller in ZOOLANDER...come on. If you seriously believe that Heder deserves a nomination over Depp (no matter how much I adore NAPOLEON DYNAMITE,) I think you're crazy and I do not trust your opinion, as I'm sure many on here will not.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Munkustrap - If you, or anyone else, feels that way, then that's cool. Opinions are what make the world go around. If everyone thought the same way, things would get really boring.

I understand that you're a Depp fan, but so am I. I didn't think his work in "Pirates" was anything special. So what? There's no reason to get angry about it.I'm not sure what your aspirations are, but I'm an actor. I appreciate things in certain performances. Others, not so much.

If you want to discredit me just because I have an unusual taste in movies, that's your prerogative, but I don't feel that I should be attacked for liking some movies, and not others.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

The only thing I will post on this thread is that Virginia Madsen should and will win for "Sideways". Her performance was raw, beautiful and revelatory. I think that she is going to come out of left field and surprise everybody.

For everything else, check out my blog. All of my predictions are on there.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I'm really shocked at the amount of people who believe Kate Blanchett will win. If she does, I don't think they're really giving it to her for this film, but for her other works. Personally, I don't see how Aviator would win anything as it was a pretty generic film. It was ok, but I didn't really see anything outstanding going on. Kate was ok, but it was a poorly written part that was played out far too long. But then, the Academy has a history of giving well-deserved Oscars years after the actual performances. When it comes to playing a real person, both Leo and Kate have nothing on Jamie Foxx. Therefore, Leo and Kate are more likely to win because they have more non-winning nominations under their belts.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

actually, no i havent seen Mystic River munkustrap. Ill go check that out. But Amen to everything else you said. lol

broadway86- the reason i liked Johnny in Pirates so much is because he was in character FULL Time. His drunken walk, his accent...it was in my opinion amazing on his part. I suppose its not easy to act like he does. But hey, its cool if you didnt think he should have won.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

As with Foxx, I thought that Blanchett's performance as Hepburn was uncanny. And what's more? She added depth to a role that could have come off as false.

PS - SallyBrown, I greatly appreciated what you said. That shouldn't suggest that I didn't like Depp's performance. I did, and I very much enjoyed it. He just wouldn't have made my cut in that category.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Broadway: I wasn't discrediting you. All I was saying is that since you seem to feel that so many stranger actors/movies deserve Oscar nominations, that your prectictions/opinions about movies don't hold up as well with me because well, I could just never imagine John Heder being nominated for an Academy Award.

And I'm not angry at all about what you said about Depp, it's not like I know him.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I'll admit, maybe I was wrong to say that Jon Heder should have received more Oscar attention, but I still liked his work (as I'm sure you did, as well). All of the other performances (such as Giamatti and Bridges) can stay where they are.

It's just that I seem to appreciate... how do I say it... non-Oscar movies more than the next guy. Am I wrong? Thankfully, "Mean Girls" and "Clueless" got WGA nominations. Because of that information, I don't feel like a complete idiot. :)

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Don't get my wrong - I absolutely LOVE Mean Girls, Clueless, and Napoleon Dynamite - I just don't see anything particularly Oscar-Worthy about them at all. When are the WGA winners announced? It would be great if BEFORE SUNSET won.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

i dunno, maybe its just me, but when i think "Oscar award" i always think along the lines of really prestigious movies and meaningful ones. Mean Girls for example was a movie I LOVED, my friend and i had half the script memporized from watching it so much, but there's always i guess something different freom Mean Girls and say ummmmm random nominee, Finding Neverland, you know?
wow that made 0 sense but yeah still

Eternal Sunshine and Sideways won the WGA, Munk.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

mef - You really think M$B will win best picture? And Clive Owen for best supporting? I would LOVE if both of those were true- Clive Owen is the one nominee of all the nominess that I want to see win. I thought he was so brilliant in CLOSER - far better than anyone else in his category.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

munkustrap-

"Eternal Sunshine" and "Sideways" won the WGAs, and rightfully so. I upset that "Before Sunset" was shut out of the Oscars, save one nomination. I would have liked to see one of the great modern love stories get rewarded.

I guess when I say "Oscar-worthy", I mean that I would include it in my 'Best of" list. The Oscars nominees differ from mine. Almost entirely so. I like to think outside the box, whether that be a good or bad thing... You know? "Finding Neverland" is a pure Oscar movie: Costume drama, biopic, tearjerker, etc. I didn't like it, but others did. I guess the same can be said about "The Aviator", but I felt more connected with Scorsese's film than I did with Marc Forster's.
