re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Emma Thompson already has 2 Oscars, Wizard.

Ah yes, she won for REMAINS OF THE DAY (brilliant movie), along with Anthony Hopkins. **crosses Emma Thompson off list**

And she won again for her Adapted Screenplay of Sense And Sensibility. And if I am going to nitpick, she won for Howard's End. She became the second (I think) person in Oscar history to be nominated in both leading and supporting category in the same year and not win either, for her performances in Remains Of The Day and In The Name Of The Father.

urgh. I'm sorry, but I must say it.
Jamie Foxx was amazing in RAY, he really way, but he's just nothing compared to Johnny Depp.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Has Morgan Freeman ever won an Oscar? If not thats a crime...

I still would really love Clive Owen to win though.

And I just realized that Hilary Swank very well may have two Oscars soon. And Ian McKellen has none. Something is not right.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I have a feeling there will be upsets in Best Actress (Imelda or Annete) and Best Supporting Actor (Clive? Haden Church?).

Of the Supporting Actress nominees, I've seen the main three (Blanchett, Madsen, Portman). Obviously Portman won't win. I loved both performances, and would love to see Madsen take it, but they have to give The Aviator something. *rooting for M$B*

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

was Kate Winslet nominated? she did good!

Are you serious? His performance in Ray is far superior to anything Depp has done lately.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Okay, a briefer version of my predictions:

Best Picture: Sideways(Why not? It's won almost every major award for best picture..)
Best Actor: Jamie Foxx
Best Actress: Hilary Swank
Supporting Actor: Morgan Freeman(though Church was great I thought)
Supporting Actress: Cate Blanchett
Director: Martin Scorcese
Adapted screenplay: Sideways
Art direction: Phantom of the Opera
Cinematography: Phantom of the Opera

Wow, ironic, just saw a commercial for the Oscars.

I'm somewhere in the middle about where I feel about the Oscars this year. It's certainly an improvement of last year, talk about boring. The only reason I watched last year was the small chance Depp might overtake Penn and win best actor, man Depp was great in POTC. At least this year it's much more unknown and no big definites like LOTR. But the other problem this year is the only major film that I looove is Finding Neverland and I fear it will come up empty again. The only other one I actually saw was Sideways, and while I didn't love it as much as everyone, I guess I'm sort of rooting for either that or Million Dollar Baby. I hope Aviator doesn't win.

And having seen it the 7th time last night and paying careful attention to both, I firmly believe POTO should win both of those awards. Int erms of actuality, though I feel it deserves, I doubt it will cinematography but it should have a good chance in Art Direction. Oh well, first time since Titanic's year I care about the technical ones.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

She was nominated for Sunshine, but not Neverland; Freeman has never won.

In acting, the Academy tends to vote for:
-Actors playing real people
-Actors playing people with disabilities
-Actors using accents
-Older actors
-Veteran actors who have never won
-British actors
-Actors who gave a great performance that they weren't nominated for either this year or the last
-Big stars in supporting roles
-Lead characters in the supporting categories (especially women)

If these add up, you get:

Best Actor: DiCaprio and Foxx tied at three (Foxx)
Best Actress: Staunton with three
Best Supp. Actor: Alda and Freeman with three(Freeman)
Best Supp. Actress: Blanchett with four

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I can't believe people are really saying MILLION DOLLAR BABY will win best picture, this is the first I've heard of it. I would say they don't have a chance, but I might be wrong.

And I'm sorry, but Morgan Freeman and Cate Blanchett are not all that great - I seriously do not understand THE AVIATOR buzz, it was so bland.

Anyway.

BEST PICTURE:
Will win - SIDEWAYS
Should win - SIDEWAYS

BEST ACTRESS:
Will win - Hillary Swank
Should win - Annette Benning

BEST ACTOR:
Will win - Jamie Foxx
Should win - Johnny Depp

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Will win - Morgan Freeman
Should win - Clive Owen

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Will win - Cate Blanchett
Should win - Laura Linney

BEST DIRECTOR:
Will win - Clint Eastwood, M$B
Should win - Mike Leigh, VERA DRAKE

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY:
Will win - ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
Should win - same

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY:
Will win - SIDWAYS
Should win - BEFORE SUNSET

If Clive Owen doesn't win, I'm going to be pissed.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Munk, Sideways has kind of lost all of its momentum (the only major award its won in a while is Best Ensemble at SAG). With Clint Eastwood winning the DGA, it has become a race between M$B and Aviator for Picture and Director.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

popcultureboy- ill change it then. As long as Leo Dicaprio doesnt win, jamie foxx has my offical permission to beat johnny. sorry but i did NOT like leonardo DiCaprio/

I'm hoping for an Imelda Staunton upset... I think she really desrves it.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I know it's obviously between Eastwood and the bland Scorsese for directior, but I never considered the best picture race to be between THE AVIATOR and M$B at all. SIDEWAYS will win, I believe.

What's really irritating me is that I can't see why people are so caught up in Scorsese. I just saw another one of his older movies and again - WAY too long, story line goes no where, dragged out, bland, pointless, and dry. The most entertaining thing he's ever directed is the American Express commercial with Robert DeNiro.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I believe that Johnny Depp is the best actor of his generation. That said, his performance in "Finding Neverland" was extremely disappointing. It's a wonder he got nominated at all. As I've said before, the following men gave brilliant, complex, and wrongfully snubbed performances:

Paul Giamatti, Sideways (first and foremost)
Jeff Bridges, The Door in the Floor
Gael Garcia Bernal, Bad Education
Bill Murray, The Life Aquatic
Liam Neeson, Kinsey
Jude Law, Alfie
Sean Penn, The Assassination of Richard Nixon
Kevin Bacon, The Woodsman
Javier Bardem, The Sea Inside
Daniel Bruhl, Goodbye, Lenin!
Jon Heder, Napoleon Dynamite
Christian Bale, The Machinist

If the Academy had actually seen the eligible films, this race would be much more interesting.

EDIT: Munkustrap- I'm not a fan of Scorsese either. I've hated all of his older movies, and "Gangs of New York". The only films of his that I loved were "Bringing Out the Dead" and especially "The Aviator". I am curious why someone would call his direction for that film bland. Visually and emotionally, "The Aviator" was dazzling. At least that is what I think.

PS - I know this is cruel, but I am praying that Swank doesn't win.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I have seen the nominated Best Picture movies, and am still waiting for someone to fill me in on why "Ray" is such a big deal. Yes, Jamie Fox's acting was awesome, but the movie as a whole was not very good. I thought it really lagged. I will be equally happy if Finding Nerverland or Million Dollar Baby take the award:)

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

i agree newwork. I heard all this great stuff about Ray and was honestly disappointed in the end.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I didn't like "Ray" or "Finding Neverland", but I loved Foxx's work.

Sally-

As for Swank... I thought "M$B" was an amazing piece of work, but Swank's performance was... good. That's it. Unlike Staunton or Bening, I felt very indifferent towards the character of Maggie. She was nice, determined, and... that's about it. The role never really took off the way I wanted it to.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I strongly disliked RAY.

Broadway86: In EVERY Oscar or award thread you post a list of who else should have been nominated - we know. And some of your choices are very surprising - I'm still schocked at when you suggested that CLUELESS should have been nominated for Oscars, including Alicia Silverstone, and even a few for MEAN GIRLS. Both were enjoyable and funny, but excellent? The highest of their art form? Hell no. John Heder for NAPOLEON DYNAMITE? Come on. I thought Depp was fantastic in FINDING NEVERLAND - far better than Jamie Foxx, who I cannot stand. BIll Murray in THE LIFE AQUATIC? HE was the same in that movie as he is in every other movie he's done, and that movie was garbage. Jude Law for ALFIE? Come on, you're going a bit overboard.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Many found it to be poorly construced, unnecessarily sappy, and contrived. I disagree. While it's my personal favorite movie of the year (next to CLOSER,) as far as achievment as an overall motion picture, I would say either SIDEWAYS or M$B gets my vote. I don't really care who wins best actress....I adored them all. Imelda Staunton broke my heart, and Benning was funny and bitchy. I saw M$B in early December, so I do'nt remember everything that well. As for Kate Winslet, she is one of my favorite actresses. If she doesn't win this year (which she probably won't,) her year will be coming soon. I don't care who wing what as long as Foxx doesn't win best actor - THAT would make me happy.
