re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I just found nothing rewarding in THE AVIATOR. Long, bland, boring, and just pointless. IT was very messy. I felt the same thing about NEW YORK NEW YORK - a movie I thought I'd love, but I couldn't even finish it. It was just bad.

I think M$B will win, much as I would love to see Sideways take home the gold. (Believe me, if Sideways wins, I'll be dancing around my apartment!). Also, Clive Owen is going to upset, in my opinion, the way he did at the Globes. Thomas Haden Church is my personal preference in that category.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I think it's funny that "The Aviator" (#1) and "Million Dollar Baby" (#2) are neck and neck on my list. Many intense online arguments have been going on over the quality of these two (not on this website, but on IMDb).

EDIT: Wow, I almost forgot that "Sideways" is #3. Needless to say, I'll be happy with whatever movie wins on Sunday.

oh please, dont even get me started on how much The Aviator did not please me. I went in the theater with high expectations and came out SO disappointed i cant even tell you.

Me too, Sally. The only regeemable qualites of that movie were the Cinematography and DiCaprio.

Broadway: I don't consider M$B and THE AVIATOR to be neck in neck at all, when did this happen? As far as I'm concerned, it's between THE AVIATOR and SIDEWAYS.

You didn't like NEW YORK, NEW YORK? Blasphemy! An amazing piece of cinema. Liza should've been nominated.

When did what happen?

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

see, i didnt even like DiCaprio. I cant say that the movie was one of my least favorites, but it was most deifnately not what i thought it would be. It didnt touch me in any way, i just..mlesh i dunno.

Yeah I was actually surprised about Sideways getting that nomination for Best Picture. NOw, I havent seen the movie but i was always under the impression that Best Picture movies would be movies like Poto, and Finding Neverland, big productions you know?

From the outsider perspective just watching the build-up, what I see unfolding is them wanting to honor both Scorcese and Eastwood - so whichever gets best picture, the other one will get director.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Mef - Liza and De Niro were extraordinary, but the movie is far too long, it's not exciting, nothing happens. It did not hold my attention AT ALL, I just thought it was terrible.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Not M$B or Aviatot related, but still.....Forgot to mention- I wholeheartedly agree about Jeff Bridges being totally snubbed...His performance in "Door in the Floor"was incredible. That man should have an Oscar!!

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I dunno, maybe I feel out of it, but I don't understand suddenly everyone believing that Sideways isn't gonna win. It won at least what I think is almost every best picture major award-critic's choice, Golden Globe, SAG, critics individual awards and well there was a whole list in one magazine there were about 8 best picture awards given out at the time and I think Sideways won 7 of 8 of them. I wish it would be given more of a chance, which is really weird because at first I didn't wnat to win. I guess I just want it to be an underdog. Oh well, still hoping unthinkable happens and Finding Neverland wins.

Ooh, and I agree w/ the Depp lovers when it comes to Pirates. It was just such an original character that he owned--I was sooo happy he won the SAG award last year. My friend and I just think he can never be better than he was in that film. What an original, memorable and entertaining performance!

I know what you mean, wickedrentq. It seems like most people underestimate the little movies. But, unfortunately, critics awards mean very little when it comes to the Oscars.

"Far From Heaven" won over 60 critics awards, more than any film in recent memory. Yet, it failed to receive a Best Picture nomination.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

I don't understand what that means...

Plus...SIDEWAYS won the Critic's Choice award, and for the last dozen or so years, the winner of that has gone on to win the Oscar. We'll see...

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Munk - that's from a site called Gold Derby that keeps track of entertainment press predictions for major awards. Those 8 representatives make their predictions, then they are tabulated into the given odds.

As a side note, the ONLY award they all agree on and feel is an absolute lock is Jamie foxx for best actor.

"I don't understand what that means..."

What are you referring to? The odds?

I would love it if "Sideways" won. It could happen, if the votes between "Aviator" and "M$B" split.
#96

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Well, I'm praying for SIDEWAYS to win. It was the best film of 2004.
#97

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Well The Aviator won the PGA--that's also a big factor.

The truth is--it was a race between The Aviator and Sideways, with Aviator way ahead until momentum built for M$B. And, it is believed that M$B will defy awards statistics--except that it did win the DGA, which is an important statistic.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

DGRant - I know it's the odds, but I do'nt know how to read it. What the hell does 4/5 mean? 4 said it would win, 5 said it didn't? And how do you get a unanimous vote for Jamie Foxx? It just says "Even." It also says that for THE AVIATOR and Martin Scorsese....explain.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

Munk - that's just the way odds are written. It's similar to lottery odds when they say 'one out of fifty' chances to win, which would be written 50/1 (usually read as 50 to 1.)

Using that, the ones that are written as 4/5 means they have better than even chances (compared to other contestants) to win.

My knowledge of the Jamie foxx vote is actually something that was included in the narrative on the site, I just didn't include that portion in my cut & paste.

re: The Oscars are Sunday!

>> see, maybe its just me, but when i saw The Aviator, all I could think about was Titanic. This happened with all of DiCaprio's movies I've seen.

i think it's less about his acting and more about you- i don't think of titanic when i see leo or kate, because they're playing different characters, and they're brilliant actors, who can turn themselves into the role. i agree the film was messy and too long, but c'mon, the cinematography was bloody brilliant! whoever said earlier that phantom should win that award i am inclined to disagree with. phantom's was boring and overdone, just like the rest of the movie.
