The Revenant

Did anyone else see this? GAWD. The cinematography is the only redeeming quality of this film. Too bad it was tainted by the most ridiculous story of unrelenting suffering and tragedy since Legends of the Fall (but without the glamour). When the best thing you read about DiCaprio's performance is his commitment, you know something's up. I mean, sure, he's usually committed to his roles, so if that's the selling point of this film, then why the fuss? His performance is about as nuanced and layered as a used piece of Fruit Stripe gum, but that's not really his fault. It's the story that from the get-go unrealistically depicts the nonchalance of the behavior of a psychopath that never justifies his actions other than as to be a catalyst for the hero's narrative. I won't provide any spoilers, but if you've seen the film, you probably know what I mean. The biggest spoiler is seeing the film. Well, fans of unending suffering and brutality might find it a real popcorn-muncher and there's a nod to Empire Strikes Back for the Star Wars fans, but this movie is probably best enjoyed by editing out everything that has a person in it and just admiring the beautiful scenery.

Saw the preview before The Big Short tonight and even that was a slog. The preview not The Big Short, which was good, although I have a soft spot for the unseen Margin Call in the US economic collapse genre.

I suffered through the whole 2.5 hours along with DiCaprio. This is another example of Iñárritu taking a simple, highly implausible story and stretching it out as long as he can for some kind of visual impact. There was really no way DiCaprio could have survived what happened to him during that time. Everyone keeps praising Tom Hardy who I do actually like but here he was nothing more than a cartoonish mustache-twirling villain.

It really does look so pretentious and boring with a performance for DiCaprio that seems to beg the Academy for an Oscar.

Namo, MARGIN CALL is a terrific film, I'm curious to see THE BIG SHORT.

No interest in seeing this film, but yeeeeah for the love for Margin Call, great film.

Yeah, that's not true. It's grossed over $1 Million, which is especially impressive given that it's only released in 4 theatres.

Another racist portrayal of manifest destiny. DiCaprio is absolutely awful. I imagine it will clean up at the Oscars.

I believe Borstalboy was saying that it was racist towards the indigenous people, not towards white people, which it basically is.

Well, this particular white American male, anyway. It's a survival/revenge tale. It has no socio-political agenda. It wasn't even made by a white American.
