I may not be a fan of John McCain but his daughter seems fairly level headed. It's so nice that Elisabeth is not on today. There doesn't seem to be as many interruptions or talking over each other. Also, I don't have to hear Elisabeth trying to make a comment after everyone- which annoys the hell out of me. I think Meghan should replace Elisabeth! She supports gay marriage and she seems to be okay with Plan B. Meghan's also very educated and outspoken and knows when to listen. just sayin'

It is all a pose. She's still a Republican. She undoubtedly voted for her father. DO NOT TRUST HER.

I understand Roscoe! But she's a much better Republican representative than that self-righteous annoying Elisabeth!

Right supportivemom, which only makes Meghan McCain even more dangerous than the self-righteous Elizabeth. Meghan is making Republicans look "level-headed." HA!

Don't be fooled. It is the same old Kool-Aid.

Oh- now I see what you mean! However, I still like her way better than Elisabeth- but then again- I would probably like anyone else better than Elisabeth!

Well played. Bonus for the Ghost reference in regards to a show with Whoopi.

I have to say that she did come off as rather smart. It's also good to know that she supports gay marriage, saying "I just wish they would be open to more modern ideals, more inclusive". I've often said that although I disagree with a lot of their platforms, the Republican party does have some good points at times. But the way Elizabeth approaches it with such unfocused passion is almost laughable. And don't even get me started on how 90% of the pundits on Fox News approach the material as if they are reporting a countdown to apocalypse. So it was kind of nice to see a young, intelligent person speak for the party. Especially since she even admits that the way they are right now is not right and that some serious changes must be made. So in short, I thought she was a nice guest-host.

It was nice to have a civilized discussion for once, instead of a rambling, antic diatribe.

I'm definitely a fan of the Meghann McCain, and I although I may be a hardcore democrat, if more Republicans follow her lead, it might actually be possible to get some better progress in this country!

I enjoyed her guest hosting. She pretty much kept quiet except when directly addressed. Usually the guest hosts feel the need to act like the others. I did find her stat about under 30s who consider themselves democrats very interesting. I liked her ideas of inclusion within the Republican party. Kind of makes it more interesting.

More than anyone else in the public eye, she is presenting the best tone for what the future of the Republican party needs to be. It's a shame that the current party leaders feel so beholden to the extreme right that they can't stray from their themes.

True dat madbrian.

I think the sad thing about the last 15 years or so is that people presume Republican = Christian conservative.

Goldwater is just about forgotten today. I would think a Republican in that mold might do very well right now.

It's really not all of the Christian Conservatives, I promise. I am one, and I support equal rights for everyone. McCain is a very smart girl, and I wish that we'd get some more level headed people like that speaking out in the party, rather than just the fanatics.

the gop faces the very real fear that if they lose the crazies that they lose any chance at actually competing against the democrats as a party.

abandoning the social values sect would very likely split the party. the only way the gop remains viable at that point is to draw enough independents to compete with the democrats. which invites the old adage, if offered the choice between a democrat and a republican who sounds like a democrat, people will choose the actual democrat (and vice versa).

i think that eventually a socially moderate/fiscally conservative party will emerge, but it would require writing off at least one and as many as three national elections in order for the party to gain enough traction to be viable. most people are not willing to make that trade. plus, the media are violently opposed to having to demonize the candidates and positions of two parties as opposed to one, so that will be tough too.

i think that eventually later we will also see a true social conservative/christianist party established because as the current population ages those views will have less and less influence in the party.

but i am waiting to see how 2010 goes before i write the gop off completely. 2006 saw the socons sit on their hands and it handed congress to the democrats. 2008 we sent earl grey up against red bull after 8 years of hearing that tea was the worst thing on earth. i am not convenced that we don't take back a decent amount of seats on disillusion alone.

Trust me, JI, I understand that the Republican party has traditionally be more than the social conservatives that have seemed to dominate it these past years. I have many good friends who are registered Republicans, and at times, I have voted for Republicans who were socially moderate/liberal, but fiscally conservative. Many of my Republican friends are pro-choice (not for them per se, but they do not want to take that decision away from others), not afraid of the big gay bogeyman, and are scared to death by the likes of Sarah Palin. But, right now, they don't have much of a voice in the party.

Papa, I think if the GOP does splinter, which seems to be where it is heading, there may be a chance for a true third party to emerge that will take the moderates/liberals from both parties on social issues, but adopt some traditionally Republican fiscal policies. I think that kind of platform would be very appealing. I think a Goldwaterish platform would work well right now for many independents, and a decent slice of both Dems and Reps.

I know it's way too early for an realistic predictions, but if I had to hazard a guess right now, 2010 doesn't look good for the GOP. Barring anything extraordinary, the economy may well be on its way to recovery. If so, the debate would be if or how much Obama's policies helped. Either way, the mood of the country could be pro-Dem. Even if there is an anti-Dem mood, they currently have an advantage of 75 seats or so in the House. In the Senate, between retirements and vulnerable candidates, the Dems may well pick up seats in 2010.

Having said all that, as a party the Dems have shown a remarkable inability to govern and promote their agenda with any cohesion, so it is completely realistic that they could shoot themselves in the foot between now and then.
