Wow. When transexuals take a beating on a theater board, one can only begin to imagine the tough row they have to hoe in society at large.
I've had a couple of patients with whom I've worked closely who were transexuals. It's an incredibly difficult journey to make. I perceive it as a compulsion to right a mistake of nature. I'm not even sure I would agree that to make that journey is a choice, as much as a need.

Some male transsexuals are attracted to women and others are attracted to men -- the same is true of female transsexuals. I've known both men and women who have undergone the gender reclassification surgery and the reasons for it had little, if anything to do with being gay or straight. They had felt from childhood that they had been born with the wrong gender and have endured years of pain and depression because of it. There are very complicated psychological issues that go with this (as well as some biological ones, sometimes -- some were in fact born with an extra X or Y chromosome). It's a very difficult situation for those who go through it and they deserve our compassion.
