What exactly is the Raison d'être for chili without beans?

That's wiener sauce!
Here taste my wiener sauce and then go tell somebody else how much you love them.

The worst thing ever

I've read that beans were added to chili as an economical means of making what was essentially a form of stew more filling and substantial. When chili recipes became competitive in the 50s and 60s, the purist mentality that evolved was that beans were unnecessary filler that detracted from the flavors developed in the base of the chili. If you've never had high-end beanless Texas chili, I can understand why the idea of chili without beans may seem odd, but it's probably a completely different form than you'd expect or imagine. It's thick and hearty with a very dark and rich complex flavor profile and nothing like tomato sauce (some purists insist on no tomatoes or tomato sauce in the recipe, either).

I really am the most Un-Southern person ever. I don't like tea, barbecue, Nascar, or chili with beans. Really, the only time I eat "chili" is as a hot dog topping.

EW, if I'm served chili with beans in it, I just leave the beans and eat the rest.

This thread is making me want to make some chili! I use steak and ground beef. If that's considered just sauce, then I don't see much difference if you add some beans, lol!

Can't you see? This beans/no beans argument is TEARING US APART? You make your chili however you want- JUST DON"T PUT RAISINS IN YOUR CHILI!
