Guess he needs the work and will take anything. What's next? David Lynch's Alvin and The Chipmunks Part 3?

I prefer the original article on the subject. I find it hard to take any blog seriously that refers to De Palma as "the heir to Alfred Hitchcock".
And yes, I hated Scarface.

Leave it to the fanboys at AICN to call DePalma an heir to Hitchcock. Complimenting Mission to Mars? What made me enjoy Paranormal Activity was the subtlety, the rawness, and the fact despite knowing I was watching a movie in the guise of video footage, I felt sincerity from both of the lead characters. In DePalma movies, I usually feel the opposite though I love Carrie and The Fury (guilty pleasure, I mean John Cassavettes explodes).
I feel out of the loop. Is Oren Peli involved in any of this or is this all out of his control?

Posted: 2/25/10 at 7:46pmOf all time favorite directors, De Palma places 3rd, for me. I didn't see the original, because the very idea of paranormal activity bores me to tears. In the hands of De Palma, I just might like it. He directed the only film with Tom Cruise I can watch, and the only film that takes place in outer space, that I like. I hate Scarface, too. That has more to do with Pacino's god-awful, hammy performance, than anything else.

Why does there need to be a sequel to this?
Anyhoo, I had given up on De Palma until the wonderful FEMME FATALE--one of his best--came out. But yeah, when he fails, he reaaaally falls down and goes boom.

Except it sounds they plan on going in a different direction with this sequel by trying to attach a name to it. It's way too reminiscent of Blair Witch 2, which was a fiasco. My problem is that while Paranormal Activity did very well, I just found it to be much weaker material than Blair Witch. Yeah, in the end they got my money, but I certainly was quite vocal about steering people away from wasting money on it in the theatre. Outside the few bedroom sequences, I was mostly twiddling my thumbs hoping the boyfriend would STFU or his stupid girlfriend to kick his ass out. It was more appropriate for Instant Viewing on Netflix.

The movie cost peanuts ($15,000), shot all in a week, and was all done for over 2 years before it actually made the rounds.
Good link of the films whole release history:

With DePalma I think they are taking it in a completely different direction from the BWP style. My guess is make the character Katie a Carrie type of figure raising all hell.

My question is why can't a movie come out, make money, and the studios be happy with that? Paranormal Activity cost NOTHING to make and made a HUGE profit. Seems like ANY movie that comes out nowadays and makes a profit automatically calls for a sequel or franchise. It makes me wonder how the hell did they get away with not making a sequel to TITANIC?

Posted: 2/26/10 at 3:31pmI'm waiting for someone to attach "Electric Boogaloo" to the title because that never stops being hilarious. It's almost as witty as attaching "The Musical!" to every satirical small musical.

Posted: 2/26/10 at 8:58pmIf the movie was remotely scary or good in any way, I could see them wanting to make a sequel to it. Unfortunately, it sucked a*s hardcore, almost as hardcore as the first Blair Witch did (a movie I will never understand people saying they liked). I watched BLAIR WITCH 2 and actually enjoyed it since it had nothing to do with it's ridiculous predecessor. It still sucked but not nearly as bad as that vomit inducing first one.

Loved it. Have watched it countless times. Saw half the sequel and shut that crap off.

Posted: 2/26/10 at 11:15pmI actually enjoyed "Blair Witch 2" better than the first (which I thought was very boring). But, I am in a small minority on that one.

Posted: 2/27/10 at 12:00amSpider, you're actually not in that much of a minority. As time has passed more and more people have admitted to not liking the first one at all. Almost like they were ashamed to admit what utter crap it was when it was first released.

I love DePalma, Love Carrie
I also enjoyed Blair Witch 2, the problem was that the script for BW2 had done the rounds for years (even before BW1), They just used that script and weaved in a Blair Witch connection. If it had not been a sequel to Blair Witch it would have done far better
I think a follow up to PA is silly but expected

Isn't Paranormal Activity utter crap too? That was one of the most boring 90 minutes I've spent in a movie theater. Total waste of money.

I was disappointed in Paranormal Activity. It was hailed as being this obscenely scary film, but...not so much.
And how is there going to be a sequel? I don't even think the Blair Witch sequel is as bad as The Ring 2...

I admire PARANORMAL ACTIVITY for what it was. A really cheap movie that was made by people who love movies. Did it work? No. But I admire what it tried to be.
What I will never understand is this phenomenon that followed hailing it as the scariest thing ever put on film. It was not scary and anyone who thought it was has never seen a scary movie before. It was formulaic down to the most basic things. I could count down to the scares. 5-4-3-2-JUMP!
I haven't seen this supposed sequel yet so I can't be too critical of it but I'm hoping if it does happen with DePalma, that he uses his expertise and creates the movie the first one should have been.

I feel the same sort of way about it, Jordan. I read the reviews saw the videos and went in with modest expectations. Admittedly I got a little paranoid about the cranks and sounds around my living space when I went to bed that night but that was as far as it affected me. I felt that Micah belonged in man-child comedy at some points but I thought Katie was right in her acting and role.
I have been on the Facebook group of the movie and months ago Paramount told us there was a sequel in the works but they never went into the details as to what whether if Peli was still in it, Katie was still the main focus, or it would go into the story of the other incident, etc.
