I've been dying to go to the traveling Titanic exhibit that's in NYC now. Anybody been?
I went. I loved it. I developed a really strange fascination with the whole thing when I was about 7 (years before the movie came out) and have been a huge Titanic nerd ever since. I went with a friend who is also a big Titanic nerd, and we completely geeked out. It's so well done. It's a little expensive, but if you're really into that stuff, it's totally worth it, IMO.
Yes. Emcee and I have a picture on the grand staircase.
My favorite parts were the recreated rooms. There weren't that many, but I'm probably the only person who loved the movie for the sets moreso than the love story, so it was really cool.
Hi, fellow Titanic loving friend.
Yes. We totally paid for a touristy photo, and it was awesome.
It was a very exciting exhibit! I was amazed at how many of the artifacts were in excellent condition. It was a grand time. I loved the fact that they give you a passenger card with info about them and then you can find out whether you are saved or not.
It seems that this Titanic exhibit is very similar to the one at the Georgia Aquarium in ATL. I am in Titanic: The Musical and a few of us in the cast went down last week and checked out their exhibit. They had the passenger cards, recreated rooms, and lots of authentic artifacts from the ocean floor. It was very interesting.
I saw it a few years back and I found it very interesting.
The only thing that rang a little hollow was exiting in the gift shop and being able to purchase place settings and tableware "recreated to look like what unsuspecting first class passengers ate what would later be their last meal." Some of the souvenir stuff outside of books and dvds seems a little tacky. I mean a lot of people died. I guess the distance of time makes things like that easier for people, but it rubbed me the wrong way.
I found the giant ice block interesting that was the temperature of the water and you were asked to see how long you could hold your hand to it. That was impactful.
I LOVED the exhibit! I'm also a big Titanic nerd, I ended up acting as a sort of tour guide regarding survivors and other stories to other people at the exhibit. They'd hear me mention something to my dad and ask me more questions.
I also loved the gift shop. One of the artifacts on display is a souvenir-size toothpaste container and the card said that, due to the small size and the number that was recovered, they believe this was a complimentary toiletry item left in the rooms by the White Star Line. I mentioned to my dad how cool it would be to own one of those and that someone should recreate it to sell. When we got to the gift shop, they had it! So naturally, I had to get one.
I said the same thing when we saw the White Star Line blanket left on the steerage bunks, and they had those for sale, too! I am fully expecting a steerage blanket for Christmas. :)
Also, I snuck a couple photos when the museum staff wasn't looking. It's really a great exhibit and I absolutely loved it.
Oh, and if you use the code METRO (in addition to a few other discount codes out there), you get $4 off the admission price.
I passed it a couple of times yesterday and wondered what was going on in there. Glad I read this thread, now I'd like to go in!
I thought about going to this yesterday instead of 9 to 5. I really would like to check it out.

Me too. I'm a Titanic nerd also.
Sounds just like the one I saw years ago in Los Angeles. It was excellent.
We saw it in Vegas & the cards we got indicate both survived
We did the picture by the staircase also. I had to drag Mrs R to it & she wound up throughly enjoying it.

I'm going in a few weeks, and am SO excited. I've been a Titanic fan for about 20 years now, and this is the first exhibition I'm seeing. I did the NYC Titanic walking tour over 10 years ago, which was also great.
Souvenirs from places like this always border on tacky/inappropriate...much like the Pope lollipops that are on sale at the Vatican, lol. For me, at least, buying something like the White Star blanket would just commemorate the exhibit, even if it is a little cheesy.
the cheesier the better for me!

Sad. Terribly sad.
I was a 22 year old girl in first class. I just assumed I survived.

I'm sorry, I laughed.
I have a fabulous Pope t shirt from the last pope.

thanks girly, I may just take advantage of that.
I was a young girl in second class. I survived.
My dad was Benjamin Guggenheim. The instant he read it, I said, "Aww, you die! Sorry! But at least you went down like a gentleman!"
