I can't remember if they told us purgatory wasn't real or not. I know that got rid of Limbo, though.

I should also add the caveat that I spent several of my Catholic years in the deep south, so it's possible some fire and brimstone bled over from the Baptist church next door.

I was raised* evangelical, but I thought people went to purgatory for a period of time and then if someone prayed hard enough, you could get out.
*i went to an evangelical church, though very legalistic, my parents didn't attend any church and my grandmother was Catholic. lol

Jane, Purgatory is a place where you spend time before beinging pointed to the up or down escalator. You friends and family could pray for you to help youget the ticket to ride up.

JG2, that's strange that you were taught that. Evangelism doesn't really preach about, or feed into, the idea of a purgatory.
The only real denominations that propagate the belief of purgatory are Latin Catholics, Eastern Greek Orthodox Catholics, Anglicans (Anglo-Catholicism), and certain factions of Lutheranism.

I think Purgatory was like Hell-lite, where your soul was too unpure for Heaven, but not bad enough for Hell. You spent time in Purgatory to purify your soul for Heaven.
There were (maybe still are?) ways to obtain indulgences, which were to help shorten someone's time in Purgatory.

I never said I was taught that by MY church, Headband. I was raised with many religious influences. I attended Catholic mass on Saturday nights and Baptist Sunday school the next morning. I enjoyed what I took from them. It's why I am non-denominational now.

Purgatory has been downplayed in contemporary Catholicism. Limbo has been eliminated.

Jane, I always thought that Purgatory was where you waited while the jury was still out on your life. Was neither a Good place or Bad place. it just was.
ETA: It was place where you waited while clergy collected pardons on your behalf from friends and family.

It was place (or phase, I suppose) for people who died in a state of grace but weren't yet ready for heaven. Purgatory purged or refined their souls to make them worthy of heaven.

Could you imagine being Moses and getting sent to Limbo? You were part of God's chosen tribe, he even gave you the Ten Commandments, but because you lived thousands of years before he sent his son the savior, you get relegated to cosmic day care for all eternity.
