Ok folks. I'm freaking out over here, just a little bit. Today is the day that I am offically handing in my resignation for my job. I have been given the wonderful opportunity to return to my private college for free, and feel that it is more imparitive for me to complete my degree and move forward in my life than to stay in my current position.
However, I'm extremely nervous. I have never really resigned from a job before. I have a typed letter of resignation; does anyone have futher advise? I know that I will be leaving the company in the lurch a bit, and that is the very last thing that I want. What is the best, most diplomatic way for me to go about this?
I'm gearing myself to go in to the VP after lunch. After that, I plan on privately telling the woman who has been training me over the past 5 months. I figure I'll let the rest of my office find out over the next week or so; I don't see the need to shout it from the roof tops.
Additionally, I am giving 3 weeks notice when my contract only requires 1. Will this be seen as beneficial, or should I just wait?
One thing is for sure...this isn't helping my anxiety AT ALL.
Kitz,
I think offering three weeks when you are only required to give one will be viewed as beneficial, and perhaps give them time to bring someone else in while you are still there.
It sounds like you are doing everything in your power not to burn bridges with this employer, and truth be told, an amazing opportunity came your way which you would regret not taking, which you should tell the VP you are meeting with.
Most reasonable employers would understand and wish you well.
A chance to finish your degree for free is nothing to sneeze at these days.

I agree 100% with YWIW. Take a deep breath; it's going to fine.
Believe me, you care much more than they do.
It will be fine.
I have nothing to add except to say you are doing it better than most people who have been working and quitting jobs for decades.
They will understand. If they are good people/employers(and you seem to like this job which makes me think they are), they will be very happy for you.
Like everyone said, just breath and relax. They will more than likely understand, but if not . . . you are not going to be there much longer anyway.
Actually, I hate my job. I just really like the people that I work with
I think you have everything planned out well, and more! Best of luck today and in your new venture!
I always get naked and bring the boss a bottle of veuve..oh wait...that's when I want a job.
Sounds like you got a good plan Kitzy.
I did it! I resigned! And it wasn't bad or scary at all! My supervisor and my trainer were both very nice about it and not at all upset with me.
*whew* That's a load off my mind. I've been dreading doing that since October!
So no one got naked?
Congrats Kitzy !!!
No one got naked.
...so anyone know of a part-time job in the Wichita area?
