Season 3 of Community. To really appreciate it though, you should be familiar with who the characters were in Season 1.

In Season 3:

  • Yvette Nicole Brown's character (Shirley Bennett) fully unleashes her dark side, as well as how she became the character we first saw in Season 1.
  • Jim Rash (Dean Craig Pelton) gets to step away from his familiar portrayal of the Dean, and work from a darker than usual script.
  • Abed and Troy (IMO, nothing more needs to be said)

I adored Community, it's been off the air so long I forgot how horribly uncomfortable I am whenever Chevy was on screen. Things were so awesome after he was fired, but sadly we didn't get much of Donald Glover as he left shortly after to go change the world with Atlanta, one of the best shows of all time.

I am currently obsessed with the book James and the series Severance which nails corporate America, according to my husband in finance. Also, High Potential, it's wonderful to see Kaitlin Olson finally get her own successful series, I have loved her since Curb Your Enthusiasm.

I read that earlier this summer (actually I listened to the audiobook on my daily walks). I really enjoyed it.

It called me back to Maguire's Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West in that it's telling a new story from the perspective of an already established/familiar character in an already established/familiar story.

Wicked on Amazon Prime video. When it came out last year, I'd rented it online so the number of views was limited. (You can only get away with "starting from the beginning before the credits finish" so many times...)

Now that it's on Prime, I can watch it over and over... Man, it's so well made and acted!

My other obsession has been Wednesday on Netflix. It is definitely NOT a well-made, written, or acted series. There is no reason I should enjoy it as much as I do.

...but season 2 is definitely "The Harry Potter-iest/Sherlock-iest season ever!" (Schlocky promo for a schlocky show that for some reason I'm hooked on)

Yeah, regarding Wicked I didn't care for the musical at all, but the movie was really fun. Great cast.

I just started Wednesday season 2. I really enjoyed the first season but if they're going to seriously give us 8 episodes every 3 years? I'm out. It's cute tho.

Trailer Park Boys on Netflix.

Just one of the quirky things I enjoy about the show: Its theme song is the isolated piano accompaniment line from Tony Bennett's 1962 recording of, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco".

A little dash of "meta": The acting and the writing can be just as inconsistently flawed and unpolished as the characters themselves. (Sometimes I wonder if that's deliberately 'baked into' the show.)

Today I am obsessed with "Project Runway".  Waiting for "Elsbeth" to return so that I can really be obsessed.  Better yet, I would like the two shows to merge with the designers from "Project Runway" creating funky outfits for "Elsbeth" to wear.

Collection 13 of "The Great British Baking Show" streaming on Netflix.

Recently added to the platform. The drawback is that only one episode is released/week, and I'm a "binger".

I'm making due by re-watching Collection 12 with my heartthrobs, Andy and my future husband, Dylan.

I loved the fashion show episode with Laura Benanti and Andre De Shields (season 1 episode 10), it was so funny. I worry about the show now that her best friend Kaya left for DC. Their friendship was the heart of the show for me, so I will be curious what they do to fill that hole.

Sutton Ross, this is exactly why I'm so glad The Pitt won the Emmy last night. It's a show from a television veteran (John Wells) that is produced on a modest budget with 15 episode seasons that release yearly. Hollywood needs to be reminded that it made television on this model successfully for decades - and that this model can still be achieved and successful in today's streaming landscape. Honestly, the tiny short seasons with a years-long gap is my biggest gripe with so many shows today.

As far as obsessions go, I finally started watching The Traitors and loved it. I finished seasons 1-3 and am now blazing through both The Traitors UK and Traitors New Zealand :)

The BBC Desert Island Discs archive. Decades of stuff. Sondheim, Tom Hanks, Marlene Dietrich, and many more. Picking 8 records to take with them if they were to be stranded on a desert island.

I go through spells of being obsessed, so much to catch up on, perfect for a 35 minute commute. Margaret Thatcher is a recent one I listenex to.

"The Remarkable Life of Ibelin" on Netflix.

Synopsis (Wikipedia): "Mats Steen, a Norwegian man born with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, becomes increasingly unable to participate in everyday activities. As a result, he spends most of his time playing video games, particularly World of Warcraft. His parents worry that he will miss out on life, unaware of what he does in the game."

One element of the doc opened my eyes to the potential of using role-playing games with people effected by characteristics of autism that hinder their social communication and physical interaction.

The doc also caused me to think abut the effects on young people who do not have the potential to benefit in the way that Mats did, but spend a similar amount of time immersed in an online gaming environment.

These, and "The Proms" are two reasons I appreciate the Brits. wink

Faraway Downs. I didn't even know it existed until last week, but I am so happy I discovered it. I saw Luhrmann's Australia years ago, but this is so much better than I remembered. Glad I gave it a second chance.

Jay, do you know the process of how Luhrmann took the completed film, "Australia" to the series, "Faraway Downs"? i.e., Did he use scrapped scenes and then re-edit to include them? Re-shoots w/both Jackman and Kidman?

My understanding is that it is a completely re-shaped narrative, in episodic form. Six in total, with a new score and editing and general vibe. The new music was specially commissioned from Aboriginal artists. He used scenes that were originally cut, and left others out. There's a whole new ending. It's been a long while since I've watched the 2008 movie, but as far as I can tell this feel much less rushed. Nicle and Hugh have not recorded any new scenes, but did do some new audio for practical reasons.
