re: Tom Cruise/Scientology/Brooke Shields and post-partum depression

Who can say? All I know is there's an "IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM JAMES" on his website that sounds JUST LIKE TOM CRUISE when talking about psych meds and all five links on his page are to Scientology front groups. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Shields: Cruise should stick to aliens

30/05/2005 - 07:58:51

Actress Brooke Shields has lambasted former pal Tom Cruise for criticising her "misguided" use of drugs to combat her post-natal depression.

Cruise - who claims to have helped people fight drug addictions through his controversial Scientology religion - recently criticised the Suddenly Susan star for becoming dependant on Paxil, following the birth of her daughter Rowan.

But Shields is disgusted by the Top Gun star's "dangerous" comments and took a swipe at his Scientology beliefs, by saying she wouldn't take advice from someone who devotes his life to creatures from outer space.

She fumes: "His comments are dangerous. He should stick to saving the world from aliens."

Shields is currently weaning herself off her medication so she and husband Chris Henchy can have another child.

I actually believe Brooke Shield's response about "aliens" is about his action movies, not a swipe at Scientology (or maybe it's both). How is everyone else reading it?

Is it really naive to think that maybe James Barbour doesn't know those are Scientology-related organizations?

To keep this on topic, Tom Cruise has always scared the **** out of me. I hope someone wires his mouth shut in his sleep.

Tom made it sound like you have to be starring in major motion pictues to be happy. That (and everything else previously mentioned) disgusted me. She has a baby, that she has been trying for years for, trying for another one and is making a pretty successful theatre career for herself both on Broadway and in London.

Who the fvck are you to say what makes a person happy?!?

The question is Tom are YOU happy? He has to constantly remind people how masculine and heterosexual his is by throwing relationships in the publics face 24/7, constantly defends his "religion" and argues about it to any idiot willing to listen. Tries to make people even more depressed about their given situations because they have a medical/emotional/biological condition and need medication to control it.

*shakes head*

This guy has lost his marbles.

I feel bad to admit it, but it's kinda getting fun waiting to see what crazy thing he's going to do next.

re: Tom Cruise/Scientology/Brooke Shields and post-partum depression

I have had depression for over 25 years. The medications that are around today are a real miracle. I know, because they have saved my life. Personally, I would never take the word of an idiot who felt the need to insult a person because of their illness and they treatment they have chosen.

Yenta, I fully support everything you just said. My dad's suffered from chronic depression his whole life and just recently went back on medication and the difference is just incredibly relieving for me. He's going through a very difficult time in his life, but that whole sense of overwhelming unhappiness--which I can always pick up on--is gone. Today's psychiatric medication can do amazingly wonderful things.

I'm glad Brooke bit back.
And I'm with Yenta and Taryn: Medications can be godsends. I take Paxil as well, for OCD, and I have improved so much I feel like a new person. It was a last-ditch effort, but I am so glad I did it.

re: Tom Cruise/Scientology/Brooke Shields and post-partum depression

I'm a former Paxil user as well - it did coincide with me feeling better. Sometimes I wonder if we're living in an over-medicated society, and I think we do, but at the same time, it seems clear that it has helped many people improve their outlook and change their daily lives. In light of that, Tom Cruise can bite me.

And here's another article about Brooke giving it right back to him.

Dr Cruise’s health advice starts feud
Sarah Baxter, New York

THE golden rule of Hollywood — do not rubbish your fellow actors — has been broken by Tom Cruise, one of the film world’s most image conscious and reserved stars.
A feud with Brooke Shields has erupted after Cruise criticised her in a television interview for taking antidepressants to help her cope with postnatal depression. Shields is currently appearing in the musical Chicago in London and has a two-year-old daughter, Rowan.

“Here is a woman — and I care about Brooke Shields because she is an incredibly talented woman — where has her career gone?” Cruise said somewhat gratuitously on Access Hollywood, while promoting Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds, in which he stars.

“These drugs are dangerous. I have actually helped people come off them,” he said. “When you talk about postpartum depression you can take people today, women, and what you do is you use vitamins.”

Shields, 39, was the star of the early 1980s romance Endless Love, a film in which Cruise had a bit part. She had her own successful sitcom, Suddenly Susan, starred in Cabaret on stage in New York and was married to Andre Agassi, the tennis player, for two years. She married Chris Henchy, a writer, in 2001 and gave birth to Rowan two years later.

Until Cruise took a swipe at her, she had been under the impression her career was going well. “Tom Cruise’s comments are irresponsible and dangerous,” Shields said in London last week. “Tom should stick to saving the world from aliens and let women who are experiencing postpartum depression decide what treatment options are best for them.”

Shields was referring to Cruise’s new sci-fi film, but she might have equally been thinking of Scientology, his religion, one aspect of which teaches that Xenu, an extraterrestrial, brought aliens to earth and exterminated them with hydrogen bombs but their souls stuck to the bodies of humans.

At a more earthly level, Scientologists oppose taking drugs for psychiatric problems and believe high doses of vitamins and minerals offer a better cure.

Mike Faenza, president of the National Mental Health Association in America, said: “Tom Cruise is a talented actor, but his comments were destructive.”

In her new book, Down Came the Rain, Shields writes frankly of her self-hatred and rejection of her daughter. Driving home one day with Rowan in the back seat she felt so desperate she got “the terrible feeling I was going to ram my car into the wall”. On another occasion she thought of committing suicide with her daughter by jumping out of a window. “I concluded it wouldn’t be too effective, because we weren’t high enough. This upset me even more.”

Shields was in a soap commercial when she was 11 months old. She went on to play a prostitute at the age of 12 in Pretty Baby. She had a tumultuous upbringing as a child star, although she went on to study French at Princeton, an Ivy League university.

Having a child was not easy. After suffering a miscarriage and undergoing fertility treatment, she expected to be overjoyed when her daughter was born. Her hostile feelings came as a shock and affected her relationship with her husband.

“Damage gets done,” she writes. “The baby is fine . . . but other people in my life, my husband, if I have a bad day he looks at me, thinking, ‘Oh God, it is going to come back again.”

Shields was reluctant to try antidepressants but was persuaded by a therapist and found her mood eventually lightened. She is now hoping to have a second child.

Critics have been kind to Shields — her story is told with “candour and grace”, according to the Los Angeles Times — but Cruise has come in for heavy fire. Already under attack for his public wooing of Katie Holmes, star of the forthcoming Batman Begins, which cynics have interpreted as a publicity stunt, his comments about Shields have appeared equally out of character.

“Has Tom Cruise got a medical degree in his spare time?” asked one commentator.
Faenza said Cruise’s remarks were a reason why people found it so difficult to speak openly about their mental health problems.

“Brooke Shields was brave to come forward,” he said, “and she’s had a famous person make negative comments about her.”

re: Tom Cruise/Scientology/Brooke Shields and post-partum depression

It's incredibly brave of Brooke Shields to come out and talk about the subject, but I have to say that I have to wonder what she is thinking when she says she wants to have another child.

It seems like, along with the chemical imbalances in the brain, that postpartum depression blows up partly because a woman already has a certain sorrow or emptiness and is hoping that a baby will solve that. Then when the baby comes nothing is solved and the baby becomes a burden for not fixing things. I just question why should want to have another one right now.

re: Tom Cruise/Scientology/Brooke Shields and post-partum depression

I have to say I just love Brooke Shields for basically telling Tom Cruise to f* off and mind his own business.
I didn't watch the whole thing, but did Oprah bring up this topic with him? Or was he too busy jumping up and down off the couch?
I'm glad she said something though and I don't think it's for anyone to question whether or not she should have another child, perhaps she's worked on the issues she may/may not have.
Now the question is, will Tom Cruise go after A-Rod for saying that he goes to a therapist?
On a somewhat related topic (of Cruise) Katie Holmes is refusing to do publicity for her new film (Batman) because she's shocked and dismayed that people think her relationship is a publicity stunt. Haha

I wouldn't blame her for taking a shot at him, but I think she was referring to "War of the Worlds" not scientology.

scary how she could be talking about either his religion or his movie.

LOL, so true bunch.

I googled scientology last week, out of curiosity, and the information on the website was most vague thing I've ever read, but it didn't mention aliens. Actually, it didn't mention any specifics.

I wonder if Tom's converted Katie yet...
