I don't really like going to movies very much anymore and I haven't seen many of the would-be contenders, but I will say I appreciated what was achieved in the following movies:
District 9, Avatar, Precious, Up

Did I even see ten new movies this year?
I thoroughly enjoyed UP IN THE AIR and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. I'll be glad if either one wins Best Picture.
The others on this last were impressive, but not the best. I thought UP was too sappy in some parts, and the villain was probably the worst in Pixar history. PRECIOUS was too over the top for me to believe.

Was there even ten great movies last year?
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

Just saw A SINGLE MAN, which shot straight toward the top of my list. What a beautiful movie, emotionally, thematically and visually.

I don't get The Hangover love. I really don't. It was an ok movie. At best.

I haven't seen a ton of movies this year, but these were my personal favorites:
Up in the Air
Up
District 9
Harry Potter
Avatar
Taking Woodstock
Julie & Julia
For me, Up in the Air is the most compelling film I've seen this year, but I've yet to see many others.

I'm really shocked to see AVATAR on so many peoples lists. I thought it was a lot of fun but not anything "great".
To me, UP IN THE AIR was the finest film of 2009 and I'm hoping against hope it takes Actor, Screenplay and Picture while Cameron will no doubt win Director.

Avatar will be on nearly every short list for its technical achievements. I thought the story and dialogue were awfully weak, but I have to hand it to them for the visuals. I was hugely impressed with what was accomplished.

Absolutely, visually it was beautiful. But that's like saying Heidi Montag is the best person of 2009.

Not really. There are many components that contribute to making a successful film and some of them outweigh others if they are strong enough. For example, if excellent performances and writing are superior to the visual aspect of a film, you can still enjoy what you are watching. I don't think Heidi's alleged "beauty" compensates for the rest of her detriments.
Personally, I thought the original Star Wars deserved Best Picture because it brought to life instantly iconic scenes, characters, special effects and music coupled with an engaging story as a landmark film in motion picture history. I can't say the same for Avatar, though. It just didn't have the same depth and range in its screenplay, but I put it on my short list because I recognize staggering technological achievement when I see it.

I'm so happy Bullock is finally a serious contender for the Oscar and I hope she wins, although I think this really is Meryl's year again.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."

2Acting, THE READER was a 2008 film. Kate Winslet won an Oscar for it last year, remember?
