So, the Oscars are due to have ten Best Picture nominees this year. Which ten movies are your favorite, and in what order? This is purely your opinion, not what is most likely to get nominated, so don't be ashamed to list Nine.

I don't really like going to movies very much anymore and I haven't seen many of the would-be contenders, but I will say I appreciated what was achieved in the following movies:
District 9, Avatar, Precious, Up
Did I even see ten new movies this year?
I thoroughly enjoyed UP IN THE AIR and INGLORIOUS BASTERDS. I'll be glad if either one wins Best Picture.
The others on this last were impressive, but not the best. I thought UP was too sappy in some parts, and the villain was probably the worst in Pixar history. PRECIOUS was too over the top for me to believe.
Was there even ten great movies last year?
Just saw A SINGLE MAN, which shot straight toward the top of my list. What a beautiful movie, emotionally, thematically and visually.
I don't get The Hangover love. I really don't. It was an ok movie. At best.
Here is my TOP 15, without having seen A SERIOUS MAN, A SINGLE MAN, THE YOUNG VICTORIA, INVICTUS, THE LAST STATION, or THE LOVELY BONES.
PRECIOUS
AWAY WE GO
PIRATE RADIO
THE SOLOIST
THE BLIND SIDE
THE HURT LOCKER
(500) DAYS OF SUMMER
HARRY POTTER & THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE
UP
AVATAR
UP IN THE AIR
AN EDUCATION
INGLORIOUS BASTARDS
LAW ABIDING CITIZEN
BROTHERS
In no specific order... and I only came up with 8
Julie and Julia
Up
The Blind Side
Avatar
Inglorious Basterds
Coraline
Watchmen
The Cove
Honorable Mention: Every Little Step
I haven't seen a ton of movies this year, but these were my personal favorites:
Up in the Air
Up
District 9
Harry Potter
Avatar
Taking Woodstock
Julie & Julia
For me, Up in the Air is the most compelling film I've seen this year, but I've yet to see many others.
I'm really shocked to see AVATAR on so many peoples lists. I thought it was a lot of fun but not anything "great".
To me, UP IN THE AIR was the finest film of 2009 and I'm hoping against hope it takes Actor, Screenplay and Picture while Cameron will no doubt win Director.
Avatar will be on nearly every short list for its technical achievements. I thought the story and dialogue were awfully weak, but I have to hand it to them for the visuals. I was hugely impressed with what was accomplished.
Absolutely, visually it was beautiful. But that's like saying Heidi Montag is the best person of 2009.
Not really. There are many components that contribute to making a successful film and some of them outweigh others if they are strong enough. For example, if excellent performances and writing are superior to the visual aspect of a film, you can still enjoy what you are watching. I don't think Heidi's alleged "beauty" compensates for the rest of her detriments.
Personally, I thought the original Star Wars deserved Best Picture because it brought to life instantly iconic scenes, characters, special effects and music coupled with an engaging story as a landmark film in motion picture history. I can't say the same for Avatar, though. It just didn't have the same depth and range in its screenplay, but I put it on my short list because I recognize staggering technological achievement when I see it.
Up
The Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Princess and The Frog
Up In The Air
Avatar
Precious
District 9
Inglorious Bastards
500 Days of Summer
The Hangover
Those are all the movies that I saw in 2009 that I thought were exceptional. Some of the other front runners, I haven't seen yet.
My number 1 is probably Precious. Lots of great films this year. Still need to see a few.
Highlights for me so far:
District 9
Up
Inglourious Basterds
(500) Days of Summer
Star Trek
Avatar
Julie & Julia
The Hurt Locker
Coraline
Really want to see Up in the Air, An Education, A Single Man, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Where the Wild Things Are, The Princess and the Frog and very curious about The Blind Side now that Sandra Bullock is a contender for Best Actress.
I'm so happy Bullock is finally a serious contender for the Oscar and I hope she wins, although I think this really is Meryl's year again.
1. Brothers
2. The Blind Side
3. Avatar
4. The Reader
5. The Proposal
6. Orphan
7. The Hangover
8. Up
9. The Ugly Truth
10. Greta
Worst year for movies in recent memories. I few gems, but aside from those listed below, cinema-going felt like a chore in 2009. Alphabetically:
The Beaches of Agnes
Broken Embraces
Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Hurt Locker
I Love You, Man
Inglourious Basterds
Julie and Julia
The Last Station
A Serious Man
Up in the Air
2Acting, THE READER was a 2008 film. Kate Winslet won an Oscar for it last year, remember?
