I was thinking about the Cincinnati Kid this morning. Christian shouldn't have taken back the Kid. He really wasn't very good to her...
Ahead of her time? Ok, Tuesday Weld was not a singer. But, she did bring some coolness to this 1960 recording she made:)

Interesting trivia about CINCINNATI KID: Producer Martin Ransohoff originally wanted Sharon Tate for the role of "Christian" before Tuesday Weld was cast. I always found it odd that Tuesday actually did the film in what was essentially the sweet, good girlfriend waiting for her man to come home. It's definitely not the type of role she had done before or since.
Ann-Margret had the showier/bitchier role...and boy did she make the most of it!

I thought this was more a "guy movie" with way too much card playing. lol Neither female character is written with any great depth. Actually, the movie is kind of overrated in my opinion. Christian comes off as simple but sympathetic and vulnerable, perhaps. Ann-Margret is great as a seductive sexpot. But, it's sort of a one-note character. Nothing under the surface. I think they should have left the Kid totally broken at the end...with nothing. But, I guess they had to give Steve McQueen the girl:)

Well, THE CINCINNATI KID was most definitely not a romantic comedy...it was about a down on his luck poker player in New Orleans...a "HUSTLER" with a deck of cards instead of a pool cue.
Joan Blondell as "Lady Fingers" gets to mix it up with the fellas at the poker table - - - and I feel she and Edward G. Robinson give the standout performances in this.
Sam Peckinpah was the film's original director, but Ransohoff fired him and replaced him with Norman Jewison - - - who went on to direct IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT and reunited with McQueen for THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR.
Under Peckinpah the film was shot in black and white. Jewison took over and thought it was a mistake to shoot a film about card sharks in black and white and rendering the colors of the cards indistinguishable during the important poker scenes. So all the footage shot in black and white was scrapped.
I personally love the film...and you can't beat Ray Charles singing that title song!

I agree, the movie is very good. I'm just not crazy about it. And, it does have a great cast with fine performances by all. Music is great, too:)
Here's Tuesday on the Dick Cavett show from 1971. Interesting interview. She is so naturally beautiful. Looks sort of like a hippie-chick lol

I saw that interview last week. Tuesday is well - - - Tuesday. That scene from the film she's promoting A SAFE PLACE is just weird. The film also co-stars Jack Nicholson and was written and directed by Henry Jaglom. It's available in a boxed set of indie films from the Criterion Collection.
I love how she shoots down Cavett's praise for her performance in PRETTY POISON. She absolutely hates that film, despite her stellar work in it. She detested director Noel Black. She was quoted in an interview saying: "He says 'Good Morning' to me and it ruins my whole day" (!)

Just watched THIEF for the first time on Netflix, and while I'm pretty certain it's not the most glamorous she ever looked she certainly had a screen presence to equal Jimmy Caan's, which is a heck of an achievement. Tremendous and tremendously overlooked.
I've never seen A Safe Place. Not suppose to be a good film but I'd love to see it because of Tuesday Weld. Tuesday never wanted to be a big movie star. That is one reason she turned down so many roles in big movies. Tuesday had a very rough young life and hated her manipulative mother with a passion. But, despite Tuesday's protests, we must love Pretty Poison, anyway
[About her mother] I hated Mama. I didn't feel really free until she died. Otherwise her death really didn't affect me much. Mama is already back here wandering around doing something. I hope as a puppy dog.

Re: Thief
James Caan once said the diner scene with Tuesday Weld is his all-time favorite scene in a movie he's done.
She became a movie star in spite of herself...
...and yes we MUST love Pretty Poison anyway...
Nothing was going to stop it. Tuesday is just too unique and special:) Roles she turned down include Bonnie & Clyde, True Grit, Cactus Flower, Rosemary's Baby and Bob, Carol, Ted and Alice.
...or as she called it "Bob & Carol & Fred & Sue..."
lol I remember reading about her saying that:)
Tuesday so cute, funny and charming as Bob Hope's daughter JoJo, in I'll Take Sweden :) Updated On: 2/11/15 at 05:14 AM
THE CINCINNATI KID will be one of the films featured at the 2015 TCM Classics Film Festival.

Wild in the Country - A more dramatic Elvis movie and a pretty good one in my opinion. It is also one of my favorite roles of Tuesday Weld. She practically steals the movie in the supporting role of Noreen; a wild and restless single mother. At a young age, Tuesday was already proving she had screen presence and acting ability. Elvis does a good acting job and Hope Lange is terrific.
This pic was taken about 2003. Tuesday is around 60 years old. Check out that smile. She's still cute and beautiful:)This was an event that had something to do with Once Upon a Time in America because there are other pics of her with DeNiro and Jennifer Connelly.

Where it all started....for me. I was first drawn to Tuesday Weld some time ago from watching reruns of her playing Thalia Menninger on the Dobie Gillis Show. I simply went crazy for her despite Thalia being so shallow and kooky lol I think I have more affection for Tuesday in this role than anything else she has done.

Rock, Rock, Rock from 1956. A pretty bad movie. Horrible plot...if you want to call it a plot. Ridiculous dialogue. But, the film is of some interest. Many of the rock n' roll acts and numbers in this movie are pretty good. Including Frankie Lyman and a personal favorite of mine, Chuck Berry. And, there is what I believe the first screen credit ever for Tuesday Weld. She is only about 13 years old in this movie and is as cute as Hell. She shows early signs of a unique screen presence and appeal. Plus, she is the main character and is in just about every scene. The movie doesn't have very good film quality. Very low budget...at least on the DVD I got.

1961 was sort of an important year for Tuesday Weld. Critics really started taking note of her acting. She was well received for playing Selena in Return to Peyton Place. Critics sited Mary Astor and Tuesday Weld as the stand-outs in this movie although Tuesday had a smaller, supporting role. Personally, the movie bored me but Tuesday and Mary Astor made it interesting when they were on screen. Also, Wild in the Country from that same year. A personal favorite performance of mine from Tuesday Weld. Tuesday would go on to win over more critics in her role in Soldier in the Rain from 1963.
Tiny Tim was sweet on her, too:)

A Safe Place - 1971
I gave in and paid the price for the dvd box set that contains this movie. And, it was worth it. This movie got passed up by critics and audiences. It was deemed too artsy and bizarre. But, some of the scenes and dialogue are quite fascinating. And, the images and cinematography of Tuesday Weld is breathtaking. She is stunning in this movie and really gives a brilliant performance. The rest of the cast does a good job, too. It might just be me, but I was surprised by how interesting I found the movie. Full of fantasy and back and forth shots that was confusing at times. But, I couldn't keep my eyes off the screen for the entire 90 some minutes of the movie.

A hidden gem from 1980 - Serial
This movie quickly left theaters. But, gained a huge fan following thru cable and DVD. Well received by critics, Serial is a comedy satire lovingly poking fun at fads, trends, and liberal lifestyles of the time. A great cast led by Martin Mull and Tuesday Weld. They are both amazing in this movie. It is kind of vulgar, politically incorrect and crude. Yet, also charming, sweet and a bit dorky. I watched Thief (1981) and Serial last night on dvd. The diversity of Tuesday Weld is quite impressive going from one film to the other. Anyway, Tuesday plays Martin Mull's ditzy but charmingly funny wife. Whether a Tuesday fan or not I would highly recommend this flick. Quite good!
