I love the series, but I agree that it isn't fantastic writing at all. It's the story and the characters that catch me. I can read tons of books where the characters never truly come alive in my head. Bella, Edward, and Alice do that... That's all there is to it. And it's so exciting that books are causing excitement.
BTW - Twilight fans - Entertainment Weekly has a Twilight cover this week with an article on the book and the movie.

I hated the way Eclipse ended.
So, HOW obsessed are we? Will you...
A) Not be reading Breaking Dawn at all?
B) Pick it up if you happen to see it at the store?
C) Make a trip to your favorite book store on Aug. 2nd, specifically to get it?
D) Hit the party at your favorite bookstore on Aug. 1st, so you can buy it at midnight?
I really haven't decided. I am afraid I know, though.

I'm not afraid to say that I'll be at a midnight party....And no - I'm not a teeny bopper though I may be surrounded by them at 11:59 on August 1st.

Posted: 7/18/08 at 7:12pmI didn't think I would hit the midnight thing, but I am usually up anyway and the B&N is not far from me. We'll see...lol.

When's it out in the UK? I certainly won't be buying it, but if it coincides with my family holiday and we run out of things to do, I might see if my family are amenable to leaving me in a bookstore for several hours while I whizz through it.

According to www.stepheniemeyer.com - August 4th Weez.
Speaking of the website- they are doing "quote of the day" for Breaking Dawn. Everyday there is a new quote from the book. Just a little tidbit for you "twihards" (seriously, this is a term used for fans... ok - now I know I've got to stop reading about this book - it's just getting ridiculous...)

Posted: 7/18/08 at 8:51pmI'm going to the party, since the bookstore is right next to my work and I'm itching to see how it ends!

Only one week until the book is released!
Just thought I would bump this thread up!

Posted: 7/25/08 at 1:55pmI can't wait. I am going to be pissed when it ends, though...lol. If Bella doesn't end up dead, I will be angry. There is so much wrong with that.

So...does it mean you're obsessed if you've read the first two books in a week and bought the third one today???? I figure at this pace, I'll be just about ready for the fourth one on August 2nd......
And not to start a controversy, but I haven't really pictured any of the characters the way they look in the movie previews.....

Me either.
Okay, I am fine with Bella. I think Jacob and Emmett are pretty much perfect. I like Alice, but they should have kept the black hair and not gone with red. Edward is nothing like I would have pictured and I don't like Carlisle or Jasper. The one I am most stunned by is Rosalie. Nikki Reed is just not the character. Okay, I could kick myself for even thinking it, but I pictured someone like a young Katherine Heigl in that role. Rosalie is supposed to be stunningly perfect. It doesn't help that I have only seen Nikki in young slutty roles. I am suprisingly okay with Esme. I HATED Elizabeth Reaser on Grey's Anatomy, but I could see her being the very maternal character (despite her five-head.) I have a friend who is OBSESSED with the books and she keeps me informed.

From the moment I started reading I had Amber Tamblyn in my mind as Bella.....and I really can't picture anyone else. Personally, I don't think Edward is handsome enough (but I know I'm not the target age group for this film..
) And I keep seeing Jonathan Rhys Meyers (and yes...I know he's too old and too blonde........)
Carlisle is not at ALL what I pictured. Definitely too young. I mean, he's a doctor right? He need to look older than the others.
I'm fine with Emmet and Esme. But what's with the bad hair on Alice and Jasper? I'd pictured Alice with a pixie cut...but heck she does look right out of the asylum!
And I totally agree with you about Rosalie. Not at all "stunningly beautiful". Although, that second picture is a bit more flattering for all of them.
That's the main problem with turning books into movies. If it's a good book, you have created the person in your mind, and rarely do two people see him/her exactly the same way.

You know... the HP films did a surprisingly great job on casting. I don't really think there has been complaints on that front, but I don't really follow those discussions too closely.
I think Edward will grow on everyone. I don't really picture Bella looking like that, but I think Alice is spot on. These people (excluding Bella) are supposed to be too beautiful to describe, so it really is a difficult task.
I always pictured a younger Stephenie Meyer as Bella.
Even though this is the last book in the series, she is going to release Midnight Sun which is Twilight from Edward's perspective.
Don't forget to go to Stephenie Meyer's site for the quote of the day. Some of them make me smile!

Wow I haven't posted on this place in forever :) but i couldn't resist this thread.
I love these books, but they are legitimately bad... the plots (After the first one) are sort of week. I LOVED the idea of him going to Italy, but after a he said/she said? He couldn't be anymore of a drama queen...
Did anyone else kinda go for a snarky Bella... and in their head it was Ellen Page??
I loved picturing Bella as sort of less than the Mary Sue she is, and creating a sarcastic version of her... it gave her character a little bit more depth.

Never heard of these books until I read an article on San Diego Comic Con, and the Twilight movie was mentioned as the main draw (over 125,000 attendees at SDCC this year--holy ****).
Lots of buzz about the books, I'm bored out of my mind, so I bought the first one last night. I haven't read too far in, but the vibe of the buzz, the author interviews, the preview clips of the movie on youtube, make me think that this is going to be one big overrated blah fest. Just the vibe. But I hope that it's a good read.

haha, it appears we have similar taste in AMAZING women!
Specifically the fabulous Sara Ramirez... If I could be anyone, it would be her!
Anyways Twilight... I want to read it hardcore, but I don't know if I'm hardcore enough of a fan to get it at midnight... but I might have to seeing as I leave for Cancun the next morning...

Threadjack! Where the hell is Sara? She got nominated for an Alma, which I think, she will win. Brooke Smith has been doing press everywhere. No Sara.
Okay, back to the vampire discussion,

I just read all three books in preparation for my store's Breaking Dawn midnight release (our theme is Vampire Wedding).
It's one of those books that's sucks you in and sort of gets under your skin. I think that an author succeeds when they are able to get their readers engaged into the world that they created. In that, I think Stephenie Meyer has definitely succeeded. She does have a great way of writing the mood and atmosphere, and there were times where I really felt the characters and it sort of surprised me. An example of this would be Bella's reaction to what she sees in Italy in the end of New Moon. That whole sequence was pretty amazing to read.
I also loved the themes of temptation and sacrifice and identity. You really could get a lot of this series if you're willing to look at the series as something more than just a teen-aged fantasy vampire romance.
However, I found that I had major problems with some of the themes and messages of the books after I read them.
Some spoilers below.
By the end of Eclipse, I found myself not really caring about the characters anymore. I wish Stephenie Meyer didn't feel the need to stunt the growth of the characters and therefore have them repeat the same problems over and over again. I mean, I want to like the character of Bella and I did after reading Twilight and New Moon. However, she's still incredibly insecure (even after everything) and she totally teased Jacob on and her admitting it and feeling bad just reeked of self pity.
The character of Edward is so freaking possessive that it makes me feel that the books are misogynistic to a point and I hate that so many young girls are eating it up. I feel that it's going to encourage damaging behavior where many of them will excuse their boyfriend/husband's behavior because they will misconstrue unhealthy behavior as being romantic or loving.
That ties into the whole idea that these books are glamorizing codependent behavior, and if you think about it, it really is. I don't care how many times Edward says that he's not trying to be possessive, but that he's just afraid of losing her or when Jacob Black says that he'd be a healthier choice because Edward is like a drug Bella is addicted to, because when you come down to it, this book series is celebrating Edward and Bella's relationship.
That doesn't mean Jacob Black is any better. Yes, I loved the epilogue where we finally see his POV (I think that the whole series should've been from other people's P.O.V because it would then be a more interesting book) and I do see where his desperation is coming from and that he's a young teenager. However, his whole "courtship" of Bella is basically him not respecting her wishes at all and knowingly making her life as hellish as he can just so he can tire her out and have a chance with her. I hate that some girls out there actually applaud this behavior. I mean there was one part that could be seen as him forcing himself upon her and Stephenie Meyer plays out the events afterwards in a humorous way (Bella fights back but breaks her hand), but I didn't think there was anything funny in that situation at all.
I know I may overcritical in this part, but I hate how Stephenie Meyer is always mentioning food in the books, but it's the lack of food she always mentions. Bella always eats a bowl of cereal or a granola bar and calls that enough for a meal. Edward even tries to encourages her to eat and she always seems like he's forcing her to eat but then always talks about how unappetizing everything looks. Yes, having a gorgeous vampire boyfriend who doesn't eat is going to make her not want to eat too based on issues of vanity and being influenced by those around you (her vampire family), but still...I think the demographic is very susceptible to these things.
I also fail to see how these books are cinematic. I mean the storylines and characters aren't that interesting to be a character study, and I can't imagine that they'll be able to add that much more to make it an interesting film. However, I will be watching it just because I liked the series enough (and I'm crushing a bit on Robert Pattinson).
With all that said, I am totally looking forward to Breaking Dawn and can't wait for the Vampire Wedding (we'll be cutting cake, etc.).

Finally finished Eclipse today, and I have to say that I didn't enjoy it or New Moon nearly as much as I did Twilight. I'm hoping the fourth one is better than the middle two. Of course, it didn't help that while I was in the middle of reading Eclipse, I started reading about the movie and casting, and none of those people fit my ideas of the characters at all! I actually had to stop reading for a day when I read that Crazy Ava/Rebecca from Grey's was cast as Esme. That totally ruined the character for me.
That said, I also pre-ordered Breaking Dawn on Amazon last night and can't wait to see how this whole thing ends. I really don't see Bella becoming a vampire, but I don't know how else to satisfyingly end the series. She can't possibly end up with Jacob, can she?

Speaking of, I was cast as Quil before reading the series. My coworker told that when I got to that part in Eclipse I should remember her going "ha ha."
