Posted: 7/30/08 at 11:14pmI guess with everything I heard about this book I was expecting it to be the next Harry Potter. Someone even told me it was right up there with Lord of the Rings. So you can imagine my dissapointment. I'll probobly borrow New Moon and see if it gets any better.

Hell, nobody ever claimed it was a great piece of literature.
Me, Im way out of the age demographic these books were written for and I can't get enough. I refused to touch them with a 10 foot pole when they first came out. Everyone described them to me as "Harry Potter but with vampires".... talk about a turn off for me -- I HATED Harry Potter! When a girl I used to babysit for (who's now 15) started reading them, I asked her to report back....
And so I fell to peer pressure. lol She loved them. Couldn't stop gushing about them.... and neither could anyone else. So I read them. Devoured them all in 2 weeks and here I am, patiently awaiting the midnight release of Breaking Dawn.
I am kind of pissed about the movie casting though and don't want to talk about it lol
Someone earlier in the thread mentioned that a good book completely wraps you up in the story. Twilight did for me. It's been a LONG time since I've gotten so wrapped up in a book, let alone a series of books!

Don't get New Moon expecting an improvement. I think Twilight is the best so far. I just kept waiting in New Moon. Waiting. Waiting. Eclipse was an improvement.
Spoilerish: The first three books had the same major catalyst, the nomads. They appeared in the first and carried through the second and ended in the third. I am interested to see what will happen in the fourth with Victoria gone. I will be pissed if a Cullen dies.

They're already dead. ;D
If these spoilers are true, then I must find Stephenie Meyer and smack her. You don't... just lay down a shark and merrily hop over it and hope one cares, dammit!

Okay, apparently they're doing guided tours in Forks (which is a real place for those of you who had no idea.... as is La Push and First Beach and the reservation and all that...)
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/entertainment/2008075490_twilight270.html
Please check out the pictures. They make me chuckle. Especially the one of the girl in the Forks sweatshirt, having her picture taken at the hospital next to a sign that says "Dr Cullen parking only."
(Though it does bother me when you get to the sign at the house, the caption next to the picture says it's the home of Dr Edwar Cullen when really, it's Carlisle. But really, who's nitpicking? LOL)

Okay, I started Breaking Dawn. Will it be okay to discuss it here as we go along? If not, ignore the next paragraph.
Just finished Book 1: Bella. SOOOO annoyed. I never claimed they were well written books, but come on. This is just damn silly, way too predictable and WAY too foreshadowed. Did ANYONE not see that coming as soon as you read the story about the Denalis? So, now I have to read the story coming from Jacob's POV when nothing but the prologue of Eclipse has been from his?

I'm still reading, but what an adventure just to find a copy today!
I hadn't preordered one when I was at Barnes and Noble because I was just buying "Twilight" and decided to see if I liked it or not. Plus, I figured, they'd have the pre-orders but they'd also have plenty of others. After all, I'd never preordered Harry Potter....
Checked my local Border's inventory online--sold out. Looked at a local Barnes and Noble, which said "in stock'. So, I went there. They had only been sent enough to cover the preorders. The cashier, under her breath, told me to try Walmart. So I did....no luck. Tried the Sears Essentials across the street, no luck. Tried a local Kmart. They didn't even have "Eclipse"! Finally, I decided to go to our local Wegmans, which is a grocery store with all kinds of extra stuff. Sure enough, there in the book section were a whole pile of them! I was afraid I'd have to pay full price, but at that point, I didn't really care. Turns out it was 30% off, or the same as Barnes and Noble! So, I not only got my copy of "Breaking Dawn", I got to pick up milk, and toilet paper, and the free can of tuna with a $10 purchase!

I got mine at midnight, but I was PISSED at borders. I pre ordered it but no one bothered to tell me that I had missed the deadline and would have to wait with all the people who HADN'T preordered!! ok end rant
As far as the actual book goes I agree about the first part... I was annoyed by the predictability, but I really liked hearing things from Jacobs perspective in the 2nd book (he has always been one of my favorite characters). Just got to book 3.
Oh, and not to threadjack but, singingwendy, I work at a Wegmans
"If we don't live happily ever after at least we survive until the end of the week!" -Kermit the frog "I need the money... it costs a lot to look this cheap!" -Dolly P. "Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofu#109re: So I'm kind of obsessed with 'Twilight' by Stephenie Meyer...

Just finished it an hour ago. Overall I did like it, but there were some things that I find really annoying at the moment. Maybe I'll come to grips with them, but some of the plot points just REAKED of fan fiction. Not that I have a problem with that, but shouldn't you at least TRY to be a bit less predictable?
My experience was also interesting. I was chatting away online around 11:15 when I looked at my bookshelf and saw my Twilight books. Realizing what day and time it was, I quickly got in my car and drove to Borders...in my pajamas. I was surrouonded by teenage girls in prom dresses who kept looking askance at the 20-something with her hair in pigtails and Kermit the Frog pajama pants. Oh well, I got the book and now I can sleep tonight knowing the fate of the Cullens.
I'll wait until more people have finished to share my least favorite plot point, but it pretty much involves the stupidest name in modern fiction since Albus Severus Potter.
"Shut up! It's been 29 years!!!" --the incomparable Patti LuPone in her MUCH DESERVED Tony acceptance speech for Gypsy.

Just finished Twilight.
some spoilers....
It was okay. I like the idea and the characters and the relationships, but it didn't grip, and I thought it was pretty predictable. I like Edward a lot. I like how the vampire family chose to live peacefully and were mostly ragingly happy for the couple. Bella is kind of cool, but by book's end, she was incredibly whiny and annoying. But maybe that was just to underscore her immaturity to illustrate just how not suited she was to the thing that she claimed to want.
It wasn't great literature--it was a light, fluffy read, despite the dark themes. But it wasn't too bad. As for the sequels...eh. Nah.

Got the book at midnight
Stay up most of the night and read for most of the day. The first half I was going - WHAT?!?!?! There are some very disturbing plot points. That being said, there are bright spots, and I am happy with the ending.

agreed. the whole Bella is pregnant thing made me go 'ummm...WHAT...I THOUGHT THAT COULDNT HAPPEN!!!' and then the imprinting on her daughter and stuff.
But by the end I was really happy and thought all the nonsense was worth it to get to where it did.

I finished the book in about 9 hours so I am worried I read to fast but to me the whole thing sort of seemed rushed (again, not sure if that is because I read it so fast lol). Now I am going to reread it more slowly. I was pretty peeved that the entire middle was from Jacob's point of view.. interesting but frustrating- it would have been better almost if it had gone back and forth so we knew what bella was feeling and going through at that time too even though I hate when books change narators.
I thought it was good but ended a bit abruptly and still wondering
* *SPOILER* * if the Cullen family was going to have another attempt on their lives again sometime soon!
*SPOILER* *SPOILER*
Also- does anyone else feel like Edward didn't have that much of a part with the baby? I kind of feel like Rose Jacob and Bella all were so connected to her but Stephanie didn't mention much about Edward's relationship to her. I still have other qualms with the book but I am rereading it to try to sort out exactly what it is that I can't put my finger on that disappointed me so much. Two things definitely disappointed me- that the wedding was so lacking in detail including how she looked and that it was so fast, and also that she didn't describe Bella and Edward trying to be together in a bit more detail.

XX SPOILERS XX
I didn't like how the third part all led up to what could have (and should have) been a huge climactic battle, and then suddenly...it just doesn't happen. I was left going "Wait...so the Volturi just chickened out? Are you KIDDING ME?!"
