Hey ladies!

GNaGL was very good. Great cast, all around. And I was so thrilled to see Clooney pass Murrow off the the very capable, quite excelllent, David Strathairn.

North Country was also very good. I'm feeling kind of on the sick side, so I suppose, "very good" is all you're going to get out of me tonight. I'd recommend both (all 3 w/ Shopgirl). I love the fall/winter when there are oodles of good movies to see. Free passes to AMC and the AMC Theaters on 42nd w/ 25 theatres is a fab combo, let me tell you!!!

Tiff, let me know if/when you find that photo I told you about. Maybe you could post it for a bit of a Halloween fright! Quarter-life existential crisis...

Off to make some soup or something.

I can't wait to catch up on movies when I get back (we're a few months behind here; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory just opened). Mabs, how'd you score free AMC passes?! That's cool!

I love Pricilla, Queen of the Desert! A fine Australian film (I've seen some pretty crappy Australian movies).

Ellie, I don't know anything about a transexual MP...

Tiff, I actually live near a Cadbury factory here in Hobbitland, not at home. I don't know what I'll do without it when I get back (actually, hopefully I'll lose some weight or at least stop gaining it).

When I get home I'm seeing See What I Wanna See on the 20th, U2 on the 21st (and hopefully the 22nd), The Woman in White on the 27th...I want to see Sweeney Todd sometime, too. So I'll be catching up on cultural enrichment in NYC and rotting my brain with tv shows and movies that I've missed. Oh, and substitute teaching so I can actually afford all that other stuff!

Love the av, Tiff! Today's Halloween here and that's the first Halloween-y thing I've seen all day.

My mom bought 10 1/2 off AMC passes for my birthday, so 3 movies for the $1 surcharge that they charge in NYC is not bad at all, I'd say! So, even though they aren't really "free," they're still a damn good deal! Quarter-life existential crisis...

I'm addicted to candy lately too, Elphie. I don't know what I'd do w/ a chocolate factory right next door! I've been binging on M&M's and Junior Mints lately.

If you happen to find a pair of cheap seats for 11/21, I might be interested in going w/ you. I can't remember if I told you, but I'd be able to make it, just miss Patti Smith, even w/ my class. And I think I may try my luck for GA on Monday. Though, if I get the GA, I'd probably skip Tuesday. Apparently they released some for at least one of the MSG shows (I think 10/7) the day of on TM. I don't think I saw any specific details though. I can't believe how easy it's been to get tix for other cities. Obviously the demand in Michigan's not going to be as big as NYC, but we've also got 7 shows in a little over a month. Anyway, GAs were going for like $50/pair in Detroit!!! ARG!

Nope...as of right now, I've got nuthin' for November. Quarter-life existential crisis... I figured I'd just play it by ear for Nov. I really want GA now though, especially after hearing from my friend that got there at quarter of 7 (and I'm talking 7pm, not am!) and got a spot just off center, on the rail! Eeeee!!! I wouldn't be game for camping out all day long, but I'd be totally cool getting there at 4 or 5 and ending up on the rail! Though I don't know what you'd do w/ a jacket/bag, etc. And if I got my fab spot on the rail, I'd want to be free of all that crap so I'd be ready to go for when Bono plucks me up to serenade me! Quarter-life existential crisis... *swoon*

*A* (the new board way I refer to my wife) and I are currently planning our "days" out a bit.

Any suggestions in terms of things we should/could do?

So far this is what I am working into the mix:

- Rockefeller Center (*A* has never been there)
- Horse and carriage ride through Central Park (another *A* desire)
- Sardi's for lunch
- Ground Zero

Any think you might suggest/recommend?

I think I've got a date tomorrow! I think I've got a date tomorrow! It's with a cute Chinese coworker (cute? Chinese? coworker? Three firsts!) and it's gonna be sooooo romantic. We're seeing Saw II together. Altogether now...awww.

And then we're going for late-night all-you-can-eat sushi which is going to KILL me because I can't eat as much as I normally would in front of a date. Let's be honest here - men say they dig women who eat. What they REALLY mean is, "We dig women who eat, as long as they're skinny and it doesn't go to their thighs." When a guy sees an average-to-pudgy girl pigging out, they're inwardly thinking, "Mmm...that explains it. What a shame." And I don't want to be picking at some edamame the whole night! (I will never re-live that Jaydon date-from-hell moment of, "Appetizer? [once over] Are you sure about that? Let's face it. You're cute, but you're kinda chubby.")

I. Hate. Men.

#1Elphie, isn't Priscilla just a gas? Australia has some not-awful movies! Er...Mad Max? (Okay, it was crap, but a young Mel Gibson in tight black leather is simply HOT.)

Will you be able to get some quick substitute teaching gigs once you return? What's the drill for actually getting jobs? (Aside from making teachers ill so spots open up!)

Mabs, is that the AMC deal you were mentioning when we were going out of our mind with boredom on Thursday? That's a sweet deal! Our only discount right now is I get Famous Players (Canada's AMC equivalent) tickets for $8 instead of $11-$14, which is just ridiculous. It's been such a long time since I've paid to see a movie in theatres - Saw II will be a first, followed by HP4, Rent and Memoirs of a Geisha!

Have you guys been keeping an eye out on eBay for close-to-face-value tickets? Surely I'm not the only one who was trying to unload my tickets at face value in October, and other idiotic, formerly greedy saps like me will be trying to get rid of their November tickets!

Oooh, Patty! Well, it's worth walking by Rockefeller Ctr when you're strolling down Fifth Avenue, but unless you're going to watch a TV filming or do the NBC tour, I don't find Rockefeller to be anything special. (Actually, is the Rockefeller ice rink open yet, or just the one in Central Park?)

Sardi's is over-priced and the food is supposed to be pretty mediocre. Mab and I had dinner at John's Pizzeria next door though, and they had a delish spinach ravioli. (Next time, I'll try the pizza, although for just a one topping, they're a bit expensive!) There are other nice places to dine at, unless you just want to go to Sardi's for the history and the caricatures!

Ground Zero...I went there on my 2004 trip but I didn't find it to have as profound an effect on me as I had expected. I think I may have not been overlooking the wreckage from the ideal vantage point though, and I got a bit confused with the lack of signage. The Financial District seems pretty nice to walk around for an hour or so though - I would've liked to while I was staying at Mab's place, if not for the weather. Happy Hallowe'en!

I think a Central Park carriage ride would be romantic! Just watch out for backsplash when the horse pees, because that urine pressure is something fierce!

What else...what else...Chinatown and Greenwich Village! "Coach bag? Coach bag?" Good cheap food, neat shops, corrupt knock-off designer vendors, and if the weather cooperates, you'll have a good time.

(I'm relying on the weather being lovely in November, so I can live vicariously through you when you do everything I wanted to do!)

We are considering doing the NBC or the regular Rockefeller tour, but we aren't sure yet. *A* has never been there before. I've been their several times, so I know what you mean, but we've got to get her caught up. I believe the Rink will be open at Rockefeller Center. I've never ice skated before, and can't Rollerblade or roller skate so that doesn't sound like the most appealing thing in the world, but i might give it a try.

Sardi's would totally just be for the history and the caricatures. I am not sold on it by any stretch and it's totally my thing. *A* is more or less indifferent. I may change my mind between then and now, but it is pretty overwhelming to sit in there and think of all of the amazing people that have been in the room prior to you. Although, I suppose you can get that same feeling from going to most of the theatres.

Ground Zero is something I feel like I have to do. I have actually been in those buildings before, so I feel compelled. I am not sure what I am looking to get out of it, but I think it's an experience that I'd regret if I didn't do it.

Yeah, the horse ride through the Park is something else that I have done, but *A* is really into it. I don't mind at all, because it is a really romantic and special moment and the person I shared it with before has turned out to be an completely insignificant part of my life.

Chinatown, the Village, Little Italy etc are all possibilities, but the sad thing is that I really don't have a ton of time to do none theatre stuff. I have the day on Monday and the day on Tuesday. Wednesday is a two show day. Sunday is a two show day. Thursday I'll likely catch some of the parade atmosphere and my flight leaves late afternoon.

(I'm relying on the weather being lovely in November, so I can live vicariously through you when you do everything I wanted to do!)

I am hoping the weather is decent also. I am not prepared to deal with any precipitation at all. Happy Hallowe'en!

In a perfect romantic world, *A* would like to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Her favorite book is a "A Tree Goes in Brooklyn" and one of the great moments of the novel is a walk across the Bridge. However, it's probably going to be freezing up there at that time of year.

We have decided to try and sell the See What I Wanna See tickets I think. As much as I'd like to see it, there are other shows that I'd really like to see and I think I'd enjoy more. Spelling Bee seems like a perfect fit for that matinee slot because it's shorter and it's a two show day. The music of SWIWS is good, but I think the OBC of Spelling Bee would be something I'd regret missing.

Despite Mabel's warnings, I am still hoping that In My Life is open and I have a feeling that it will be. Joe Brooks really believes this is great and unlike Carrie, it doesn't cost $50M to operate. I want to be a part of the "experience."

Pat, I'd honestly go w/ Spelling Bee over SWIWS. I liked SWIWS and I'm glad I saw it, but I certainly didn't love it. I suppose it was worth seeing for the cast, etc, but if it was between the two, I'd definitely go w/ Bee.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a lovely walk. And you never know about the weather. I walked it on November 22nd last year for the U2 concert, and it was a pretty decent day. Sure it was cold by the evening, but if you do it in the afternoon, I could see it being in the realm of possibility (weather-wise).

I don't really have any other suggestions. Isn't that sad for a NYer?!? I usually just mill around aimlessly, and that can be surprisingly fun (though I know w/ such a limited amount of time, you're not going to want to do that). But, yeah, fun times can end up coming out of the most random places. I mean, out of our non-concert/play time, I think I had the most fun w/ Tiff lounging at the Marriott watching the elevators, hoofing it to Serentipity 3 in the pouring rain (so even bad weather doesn't necessarily equal no fun at all...though really, a whole week was a bit much!) and Tiff's quest in Chinatown. "Coach bag?! Coach bag!?!" Don't underestimate just walking around and seeing what happens. Sure Serendipity and actually finding the bag were good times, but I think getting there/the quest were much more fun.

Oh, and I went skating in Central Park last winter w/ a friend, and I hadn't gone since I was 5 or 6, so I totally can't skate (don't rollerblade either) and we had a blast! And I didn't fall over once (I came close a couple of times when they make you switch directions, but whatever)...So don't assume it'd be a guaranteed disaster in the making.

One more thing...I've never been to Sardi's, but from what I've heard, the food's really not that great for the money. Then again...I just looked at the menu and this looks DIVINE: Spinach Cannelloni au Gratin - Spinach and Ricotta Cheese Filling rolled in a French Crepe with Supreme Sauce Main Course $24.75 Appetizer $12.50...MMmmmmm!!!! I don't know. I suppose if you're going all out for the week, especially w/ all the theater, it would seem appropos.

Alright, I guess I'll give the ice skating a shot in the interest of having a "stereo typical romantic week in New York."

If I bust my ass though, I hold you partly responsible.

Are you considering doing a midnight Rent sceening? I think we are going to see it after Piazza that night.

I'm going to be in NH by the end of the week when it opens, so I'll probably just go that Friday, assuming it's playing at home. Hopefully it'll be playing at our one stadium seating theater. I bet it will. Even when I was home over the summer for a week, they already had a poster up for it. If not then my mom and I'll make the trek to Mathuen, MA. I'm sure it'll be playing there, and they have a lovely Loews cineplex there...Anyway, for you, there are several theatres up around Lincoln Center, so you'd have plenty of options up there. Grab a quick drink/coffee, and then head to the screening.

I'm sure you'll do fine skating. Just stick closish to the edge railing, so that if you're losing your balence you've got something to grab on to...and for god's sake, don't drag your wife down w/ you!

Awww, I would have loved to, but alas, I won't be here. Happy Hallowe'en! I'm pretty sure I'm leaving late Tuesday night after I get out of class at 8:30...assuming I can't snag U2 tix. In which case, if I did, I suppose I would still be here. Though if I stay until Wednesday morning, I'll probably be catching the earliest bus available, so I don't think I'd be up for 8 hours of class, a U2 concert, a midnight movie, and then getting up at 6 to catch the bus...Ohh, though I guess I could catch the movie in Boston somewhere on Wednesday, since I'll be there. Hmmm. I hadn't thought of that!

Damn U2! I wish they were going to Boston after MSG in November rather than to Montreal/Ottawa. I still really want to bring my mom, but the only way I could sort of see that happening is if I find a pair for Tuesday, then we could just drive back to NH, which would save me a trip on the bus (twist my arm). And the 2 dates in Boston are Dec. 4/5th, and I can't go back home for a Sunday, and certainly not a Monday concert. Pity Arcade Fire's opening in Montreal and tix'll be so scare for that Saturday...Like I need to go to another concert anyway! Happy Hallowe'en!

Anyway, yeah...don't think it'll work, Pat. Happy Hallowe'en!

I would say if Sardi's is important, go there for lunch since it'll probably be substantially cheaper than dinner. You should see the WTC anyway - I was at the top of it a week to the day 9/11 happened, so it was definitely a necessity. Even though I wasn't as moved as I had expected, I would've regretted it more if I hadn't seen it at all. You can do it the same day you walk the Bklyn Bridge since they're close by (and if you and *A* are inclined, stop by Century 21!). Ohhh...do it at sunset! *sigh* THAT would be romantic.

I told Pat the same thing, Mabs, about SWIWS. The performances were good and all, but I preferred Spelling Bee, and the OBC is just fantastic.

Mab, when do you go back to NH? I was going to send you a care package today!

Patty, Mab's is right. Sometimes the vegging and wandering is more fun than seeing the sights. (Then again, I had more leisure time, but one afternoon to take it easy is really relaxing!) My Coach bag is pretty (pretty BROKEN!--the lining started to wear thin when I boarded my plane!!) but it's the memory of traipsing through Chinatown and Mab's look of "What the F*CK are you doing, idiot?" when I hopped into this ramshackle building with a knock-off peddler and left her behind that REALLY are the memories I cherish! We had some of our best laughs when we weren't seeing a play or concert!

Mabs, did you mean you'd join me if I found a pair for 11/22? I think that's what you meant, and if so, that would be great! I'm still looking, though. Happy Hallowe'en! It seems like that's the day everyone wants to be there, and no one's giving up tickets easily. I should have bought some tickets on TicketMaster when I had the chance; remember when I was debating about that? They didn't have any cheapies so I passed, and I could have at least sold them to make some money. Arg.

Pat, I obviously haven't seen SWIWS yet so I can't advise you on what to see that day, but I loved Spelling Bee and I definitely recommend it. Although that would mean I wouldn't get to see you that day! Happy Hallowe'en!

I don't know what I want to do w/ the November shows. Ideally, I'd like to drag my mom down, so we could go, but I doubt she'd be up for taking yet another day off work that week (since she's already got Wed-Friday off). So, I'd say if you can snag a pair of cheapies, then I'd be game. Are you going to try for GA on Monday, even though you've already got a ticket? I'm definitely going to be looking for a GA for 11/21, and if I do get one, I'll probably scrap 11/22 altogether (even though it's my one year anniversary w/ my obsessive relationship w/ the lads that developed after the Brooklyn Bridge show)...and just go home after class. Still very up in the air. Though if you do happen to see someone on interference w/ a cheap pair for Tuesday, we could meet up at some point (Sunday at SWIWS?) and you could pass off the ticket, and I'd just beat feet after class.

Ummm...what else. Yeah, I thoroughly enjoyed Shopgirl. I enjoyed CD, but of course you're still my favorite Claire, silly! I LOOOVED Jason Schwartzman though! He was just fabulous.

Anyway, gotta run to meet a friend for dinner. Well, not really. I'm still feeling kind of SH*Tty, so I'm just going to sit there and chat.

Later, folks!

ETA: Elphie, when do you get back again? Alanis is going to be playing at Roseland Ballroom, and the tix went on sale Friday...they're only going for face now on craigslist (and apparently broker websites too). I'm anticipating them being fairly cheap by the time the 18th rolls around (face is $28, btw).

I'm soooo not up for going on a date today. I look like hell, my personal statements haven't been started (and they're freakin' due tomorrow at 11:59pmEST) and it's already pitch black.

This'll be my first year in many where I didn't attend a midnight showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Happy Hallowe'en!

I leave for NH on either 11/22 or 11/23, depending on what happens U2-wise. You going to send me a care package?!?!? Eeee!!! I would like to think it could get here in 3 weeks, so my leaving on the 22nd/23rd won't be a prob. I'm a bad friend, and never sent Elphie the care package I promised her! *bites lip* Sorry, Elphie! Happy Hallowe'en!

Try to have fun on your date, Tiff. I forgot to say congrats/have fun before! I'm sure you'll have a grand time. Be sure to fill us in!!!

I'm supposed to be revising a paper for my women's studies class, but I'm just not feeling it. It was boring enough to write the first time, I certainly don't feel like going over it again. Blech.

Oh, and my package of blank DVDs got to the kind and gentle soul who offered to do the B+P trade, so YAY!!! Now all I need is for them to get back to me in one piece! Huzzah! Pat, I'll sort something out w/ you, I promise. I suppose I could hand them off to you when you're here in November, if I've gotten them, but it'll be hard to let them go again, so soon after getting my hot little hands on them. At least if I did it that way (and I'd make you bring them on your carry-on!) I'd know that you'd have copies of everything in CA before sending them back to me, should something go awry again.

ETA: I discovered that I lost my U2 button today, so Elphie, if I don't snag U2 tix myself, I'm going to have to make you fend off the crazy lines and buy me another one...Pretty, please! You're my FAVORITE Clarie ever!!!!

I think she's planning on leaving the evening of 11/22 to go home for Thanksgiving, unless a pair of cheap U2 tickets for that date comes up, in which case she'll leave the 23d. Right, Mabs?

Aw, sorry you're missing Rocky Horror Picture Show, Tiff. But I'm sure the date will be fun once you're on it!

re: Alanis. Is it on the 18th? I ssooooo wish I could go, I really am tempted, but my flight gets in that night at 5:00pm. I can't sleep on planes so I will have been up for, like, 30 hours, and although I fly into JFK I'll have a ton of luggage weighing more than me and it just doesn't seem feasible. Arg!

Awww, what a pisser, Elphie. I didn't bother getting tix in the general sale myself, because I figured I've already seen her twice in the last 6 months, but if I can snag a ticket for $20 or so, I think I'll probably go.

ETA: Guess ya saw it! I hope they still have those shirts! It's not every city that has their own special shirts!! Happy Hallowe'en!

How much did the MSG tee end up selling for on eBay? Can you believe the very tees we were insulting, Mabs, ended up being bid up so high! (I'm sure everyone else has the same mentality as us - kinda of crappy looking but a helluva memento! Then again, we wouldn't spend more than $20 on it!) Hey, just a thought Nic, since there's still that merch section before you have to show your ticket, you could probably go to MSG yourself and buy a pin, eh? And perhaps linger long enough so the concert's already started and you can hear it from that area?

I'll have to mail out your care pack on Wednesday, so hopefully it'll reach you in time. Do you come back for finals or anything in December, or is your term over in Nov?

Do you have any fun stop-overs on your way back, #1?

ETA: Mabs, Alanis isn't doing another acoustic, is she? I'm sure a lot of it sounds fine, but I'd rather hear the plugged version!

Oh yeah, I hadn't even thought about the fact that they wouldn't have checked tix yet at that point! I suppose I could just pop in there and snag one myself. Hopefully I'll have a lovely GA ticket and I'll be getting myself all ready to have my ass dragged over that damn baricade for my moment in the sun w/ Bono, so getting into MSG won't even be an issue. Hey, I'm sick and dillusional. So, sue me!

I would tend to think that even going out on Wednesday it should be here by the 22nd (even if I leave on the 23rd, the University is closed, so the mail room wouldn't be open). If not, I'll be back the following Monday until mid/late December. They still haven't issued a proper finals schedule, so I don't know when I'm done exactly.

OK, ladies...I've got to take one more lit class, and the only 3 that'll fit in my schedule are Chaucer, Early Modern Women's Writing, and Virginia Woolf. What should I take (I don't even know why I put Chaucer in there, because I'm so beyond done w/ Middle English it's not even funny). So, between the other two, which would you take?

ETA: I'm not sure if Alanis is plugged in or not. She was when she opened for the Stones. It was nice to hear both. I definitely be gunning for plugged in as well!
