I don't know Ellie!!! I would expect a few rarities in each show, but it does indeed seem a bit crazy! Whatever, I know there'll be no pleasing me whatsoever. I'll find some setlist in Detroit or something that I'll be bitching about..."Why couldn't I have seen THAT show!!!" There'll be no pleasing me, because w/ their back catalogue, there's no way to shave it down to a 20 song set. Part of me is thrilled about rarities that haven't been played in 15-20 years, but part of me is itching to hear the classics at least once! *Selfishly reassures myself that out of my three concerts, I'll hear most of the songs I want once!*
Hi girls! (mabel, I just replied to your PM)
TWO DAYS! I'm getting SO EXCITED for Wednesday....and of course the 1st show is tonight so there's a ton of local coverage and radios doing all U2, etc. (e.g. check out www.91X.com where they're streaming live a totally eclectic mix of old new and obscure--e.g. right now they're playing an old demo of Street Missions!) I'll keep you guys posted about the Weds. set list, etc. Apparently they did a dress rehearsal in LA this past weekend? The rumors of old and new material are continuing.
Oh, mabel, I forgot to mention--we decided to stick with the Terrace seats (more pricey, but in front of stage ) and my friend and her husband are using the loge ones right behind the stage. It's going to be amazing just being there at all!
My only minor freak-out is that I may have a callback that night .....they're scheduled from 6-10, but unless they're content just seeing me from 6-7, I will have to say screw the play--it's U2 we're talking about!! Hopefully they can see me early on and I can speed to the arena and still get parking--I don't care if I see Kings of Leon at all?! Do you think it's a problem getting in after the opening act has started? When I went to the ZooTV tour we were a bunch of jackasses drinking in the car rather than going in to see the Pixies, so I would imagine they'll let me in, but I'm not sure.
p.s. Tiff, I can't BELIEVE you met the suitcase woman!!!! That sh!t is legendary!
Grownupgroupie, you KNOW we all want a play-by-play review! I'm so excited for you, although I saw the same thread that Mabel was referring to about the suspected opening night set list and I'm not thrilled with the lack of old classics! Still though, it's U2!!!!!
Some time when you and Mabel are around, I'll have to tell you what REALLY happened with that suitcase. Danielle, the suitcase lady, gave us the juicy details. First thing, it turns out it was never stolen from Bono - our boy actually left it behind on his own!
Have fun tonight! I'm dizzy with excitement for you!
would love to hear the whole suitcase drama one of these days.....
I'm actually not going tonight (I wish!!) but I will be practically hyperventilating 48 hours from now b/c I'm going on Weds!! Will definitely give as much blow-by-blow as I can!!
Sent you back a lengthy PM!
Tiff, I definitely want to know about the suitcase story. I never really heard all that much about it detail-wise, so it'll be cool to hear about it from the horse's mouth, so to speak!
I'm of two minds about the dress rehearsal set list. Part of me is psyched about An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart, and Electric Co, Stories for Boys etc. I've been listening to early 80s boots the past week on spring break, and am kind of on a Boy kick. Though, the other part of me has a list of 20+ classics that I want to hear in the worst way! Seriously, ALL of the Best of 1980-90! I'm totally shocked that there seems to be so much from ATYCLB. It seemed like they were All-lite on the Elevation tour. Skimming through setlists, there were nights when they'd only play 5 or 6. I can't believe they'd play 3 of them now (and no Kite!)
As long as I hear most of the classics once out of the 3 shows, I'll be lucky enough to catch, I'll be happy. I guess I'll count Brooklyn as a fourth, so I suppose I can scratch I Will Follow and Out of Control off my list
Oh, and grownupgroupie, I don't see why there'd be a problem going in after/durning Kings of Leon. When I saw REM in November, they arena was half empty during the opening act and pretty much filled up just before REM came on. I'd just scan some posts on interference tonight/tomorrow to see when U2 takes the stage tonight. If you don't want to know the setlist/spoilers, I'll be reading them, and can post here or drop you a PM to let you know if someone mentions what time they took the stage.
I was pretty happy with the dress rehearsal setlist. It's impossible to make up a "perfect" setlist because there are just so many songs. But, for the most part, I like the dress rehearsal one. And I've heard they've been practicing a LOT of songs that are not on that list, so expect them to vary it quite a bit in the different shows.
grownupgroupie, I want a full report! I'm so jealous, I really can't wait until May to see them!
Yeah, they've been practicing a load of songs. I'm bummed because I imagine they'll be doing a killer extended set in Vancouver since the sound will have been fine tuned there and they have an attachment to the place now. *Reminds self of Madison Square Garden and perks up* Mabel, I'll be looking into payment options for the tickets in the next couple of days once everything settles down, and I'll get back to you ASAP.
I don't really like the dress rehearsal set list - I was hoping for at least 50% Best Of 80s-90s songs, but I suppose not. Well, it should appease the die-hards who have been to every concert, and not relative "casual fans" such as myself. I'm hankering to hear the Stories For Boys/Vertigo medley if it winds up making the cut though.
Oh! And I saw the VH1 induction special last weekend! (Thank god for American cable while on vacation!) Did you catch it, #1? I don't like how they edited the speeches into the performances, but Bono's part about his 3 Kodak moments...*tears up*
Squee! Anyone who gets HN (Headline News) channel (an affiliate of CNN) - U2 concert news is going to be featured on Showbiz Tonight momentarily!
Cool Tiff...just keep me posted! I haven't gotten the bill yet, so I've yet to totally freak (not that I'll totally freak...maybe just have a momentary eye twitch or two!) Oh, and I saw on ticketmaster that the tix have been printed and shipped. I'll let you know when they come. I always feel a little better when they're actually in hand (well, my folks hands at home in NH, but still!)
Ummm, here's the setlist from last night's show...I'll put it down a few lines in case someone doesn't want any spoilers (I think Ellie had said she didn't want to know what they were playing...gonna be a long wait till October!!! )

So, there ya go...Looking forward to hearing grownupgroupie's review of what may or may not be the "B-setlist."
A few thoughts from looking at pictures/scanning a couple of reviews. A lot of people are bitching that the show looks too much like Elevation. Well, that doesn't bother me much, since I never saw Elevation! It sounds like getting into the egg thing is totally random, Tiff. They scan you ticket and the screen turns red or blue or something and you get in. Kind of sucks for the people that camped out from 5am to have the first spot in line!
Not sure how I feel about those light curtain things. In the couple of reviews I've read, the general consensus seems to be that they are more of an annoyance than anything else. People complain of them being distracting and one person even said they had to step out for a few minutes, because trying to make out the pictures projected on them gave him a headache! Super! Also, I'm not sure what they'll do to the view from behind the stage. I guess they aren't down the whole time, but I would think when they are, that'd block the view from behind (unless you can see through them???)
I guess that's it for now. Talk to you later ladies!
Dammit woman, must you beat me at everything? I was SURE that coming on here at 6:45 would ensure I post my thoughts on what I read before you!
Well, I pretty much echo everything you said, and looked at the set list over and over to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me - FOUR songs from the Best of 80-90??? FOUR?? And not even The Sweetest Thing! (Not that it's a particularly good song, but if you put the freakin' thing on your milestone CD, you best sing it some time!)
Well, I'm listening to HTDAAB continually, hoping I'll learn to like it more than the classics by next month! :-/ They didn't even play I Will Follow, which is the one song I really wanted to see done live!
I've got mixed feelings about the random egg thing. On one hand, I think the more committed fans who are willing to camp out should be given priority (sure, some people would argue that work, school, blah blah prevents them from being there - I say big deal, it's U2). As well, what'll happen if one of us gets into the heart and the other person doesn't? I don't mind ditching her, but she's my ride home and she'll be none too pleased! But speaking purely selfishly, I don't know how early I'll be getting into Seattle on Monday, so bring on the random light thingy, and I'll find my own way home if need be!
So those are pretty much my thoughts. I also hope they wind up losing the light curtain things, especially for our benefit in October! I can't WAIT for Zoo Station! WHOOOOOO!!
*sighs unsettled* Yeah, of course I like HTDAAB (currently listening to Miracle Drug), but listening to mostly that and FOUR '80s songs? And no I Will Follow? *induces nosebleed*
Awww, sorry to beat ya to it...again! But, it was 9am here after all!
I'm thinking the chances of them doing I Will Follow are pretty slim now. If you'd have asked me 2 months ago, I would have bet some serious money that it was going to be guaranteed at most every show. I mean they played it as one of the THREE songs on SNL, and they played it in the mini-set in Brooklyn. It seemed like it was going to be a staple. However, w/ the three or four other songs from Boy (if you count the snippet of SFB) I don't see them having another one from Boy on top of those.
I'm pretty surprised there aren't more from the Greatest Hits. I really am. Though, I am glad NYD and SBS were added. I guess that's better than only having Streets and I forget what other one from the dress rehearsal.
Oh, and before I forget. As long as one of you gets beeped/the light change, you both can go in. There are 200 beeps and 400 spots in the egg thing, at least that's the way I understood it. As much as it sucks for the people who waited all day, I agree...it'd be nice to just show up a couple hours ahead of time and get a primo spot!
Hmmm, what else?!?!? I don't know. I actually like HTDAAB a lot, but I'd rather hear Crumbs, Fast Cars, and OOTS than Miracle Drug and Yahweh. I'm really looking forward to Love and Peace or Else though (especially Bono playing the drums?!?!? What's that about?!?!)
I'm keeping my eyes peeled for an actual review from someone behind the stage. I'm thinking the 400s will probably be kind of shoddy, but maybe the 200s will be okay. Both sections are really more side/rear. I saw somewhere online that the section next to our 200s was $160 each, so even if the view isn't the best, I'll love knowing that people a few feet away paid triple what we paid!!! (I always used to love getting the rush for Urinetown, knowing I paid $25, while the people right in front of me paid $100!!)
Before I head off to class...I found this online:
Clip of Vertigo w/ snippet of SFB
Just bumping this up to say I got the tix for the October shows at MSG. Woohoo!!! I guess I could have just sent you a PM, Tiff, but whatever.
Yay! That was fast! I got an email saying my tickets were printed a couple of days ago, so I'm expecting them in the mail any day now! Argh, I should get on this whole sending you money thing, huh? I wish you had PayPal. Is it a possibility? It won't cost you anything and it's safer and much faster.
Oh, oh, one more thing. My eyes are bleary from staring at the screen for so long and I don't have the patience to pore through every interference thread (especially seeing as the server is clogged 75% of the times I try to get on there!). Mabel, do you know what the stage layout is yet? It's driving me crazy. Someone posted concert photos from yesterday and the stage itself looks big and great, but I don't know what the layout is and if it's on the side of the middle. I'm guessing it's on the side, huh?
By the way, someone posted pics from behind the stage and the obstruction doesn't seem to be a problem - granted, the pics weren't taken when those curtain thingys were up. I think if we're on the side-rear corner, we should be okay!
There's a bootleg of opening night out. Hmm.... *drool*
Oh, one more thing. Reviews seems pretty mixed this time 'round, huh? A lot of it seems to be the energy in the elipse. It makes sense - someone started a thread saying that by using this random system, you don't get only hardcore fans near the front, so the energy seems really down. Bummer.
ETA: Just listened to the clip you posted. (Do you have the boot already?!) Not what I expected it to sound like, but I don't care - I'm seeing him sing that very song in a month! *happy fangirl dance* I'd like to get me hands on the full concert though!
Yeah, the tix came faster than I expected! So yay! I'm always nervous that they won't come, or that I'll be waiting until the day before. I hate that "we guarantee that they'll be there w/in 48 hours of the event" thing. I'm always totally paranoid that it'll be 2 days before and then they'll arrive in NH (or Vancouver for you!) wouldn't do much good, since the concert's in NYC!!! Ah well, all seems to be going fine, so no worries there.
Ummm, from what I gather, the stage is at one end, and it's rounded w/ the oval-y egg thing as the replacement for the heart. The pix from behind the stage that I've seen don't look bad at all. There are a bunch on the photo thing on atu2.com (I signed up for it this morning, because it said there were fan pix from all over the arena). There was one (that looked like it was from a high section) that looked a bit obstructed by light riggings, but I'm thinking that might not be a problem on the sides where we are.
I don't have a boot yet (that website I linked to just had 1:30 clips of Vertigo, COBL, and Electric Co.) They've got a bunch of tunes on U2exit.com and I downloaded an MP3 version of the concert through Bullet the Blue Sky that someone posted a link to on interference, but shortly after that, my computer was kind of frigged (it was super slow, and I couldn't get on-line) so I deleted it. I have no idea if that's what the problem was, but I figured it wasn't worth dealing w/ any potential problems, so off it went to the trash. I guess I'll just wait for a hard copy to surface and do an old fashioned trade or a B+P or something...Well, I don't even know if I'll bother getting this one. I'm really more interested in the shows I'm actually attending (and maybe the other NYC/Boston shows, and/or the occasional show that pops up w/ rare song or something *cough, Fast Cars, cough*).
Oh, and Tiff, I actually think my parents have a PayPal account, so I suppose I could have you send it to them and have them write me out a check. Would you be able to do that in US$ or would you have to figure out the conversion rate in Canadian? I don't know why I'm writing all of this here (like everyone else needs to know!!!...or cares)
Anyway, back to my homework...exam tomorrow
Is grownupgroupie at tonight's show? It should be starting soon!
There are boots floating around, I've seen lots of torrents of the whole show. Mabel, I'm the same way as you, I only really want the shows that I'm seeing, the really big shows, and the ones with rare songs, so I'm not downloading this one yet. But if anyone wants it, its out there.
The pictures I've seen look good, and I don't think the view should be too obstructed from side/rear seats.
Yay! It's coming soon, ladies! HAVE A GREAT TIME, GROUPIE! (Not that I need to tell her that. And not like she'll be online at this hour. She should be, uh, graced? with Kings of Leon right now.)
I don't care enough about the opening show to DL the whole thing, especially seeing as my collection for trades is fairly limited. And reviews seemed pretty mixed among fans. Apparently Bono wasn't at his best, especially in terms of really connecting with the audience and using the run. (Not that that would translate on a boot!) I'll be keen on my Seattle show, the first Vancouver show (which I bet will be a longer set list and an excellent performance) and the MSG ones. Oh, and one from Dublin.
I don't know if this'll still work, but I listened to the whole show earlier today here (w/o having to download it or anything...what's the deal w/ torrents anyway?!?!?!)
Opening show from SD
Yep, just checked it and it still seems to be working (I think they guy who posted it said it won't be there forever...maybe just until tomorrow's show is loaded in?!?)
Anyway, there were definitely parts that I wasn't thrilled about. I know it was the first show and that'd be like giving a review of a preview on Broadway. They'll definitely need some time to gel, and figure out the setlist, etc. However, some things in particular...Sunday Bloody Sunday was a major disappointment. It didn't have anywhere near the passion I'd expect from it after listening to the boots. Also, (totally random, and I don't know why it bothered me so much, but it REALLY did!) there was no "I'M/WE'RE SO SICK OF ITTT!" Have you guys noticed that on the boots? I LOOOOOVE it! It's just a little thing, but he seems to do it in most concerts, and it's just like *POW* So emotionally charged...totally gives me chills.
Also, I HATE the fact that he only sings like a third of One, and just lets the crowd pick up the slack on the rest. Ummm, yeah totally nice to have the audience interaction, but he'd only sing a line here and there. I was sitting there thinking "Bono! Where are you?!?!?! Hello, hello!" Dammit, it's a classic, and I want to hear Bono sing it, not the crowd. (ETA: I was listening to it again this morning...I guess Bono sang more than I gave him credit for last night, but there were still some biggish chunks where he just kind of let the audience go at it...eh, I dunno!)
I don't know...I guess that's it. I know it'll get better as the tour goes on in the next week or so, but those two things bothered me (and yes, I realize one adlibbed line shouldn't bother me so much!) Oh, and I also think Vertigo should open the show. It is the Vertigo Tour afterall, and I like the "uno, dos, tres, quatorce" opening it. It's counting off, and it seems kind of fitting to open counting it off. Dunno.
Guess that's about it...Oh, did you see someone's selling the DVD on eBay for $19.50 w/ s/h? He's sold well over 100 in less than 24 hours!!! That's quite a hefty profit my friends!!! Crazy! I think I'll wait it out and try to scavange up a B+P trade for one of our MSG shows thank you very much! Maybe I could work out a trade...I got the Brooklyn Bridge DVD (and I'm getting ZooTV Sydney, PopMart Mexico, and Elevation Las Vegas...for FREE!!! *squeal*...I'm in the process of trying to figure out how to burn DVDs. I've got a friend who can copy from DVD to VHS, and she supposed to be getting a burner that can go from VHS to DVD, so although it may suffer from a bit of generation loss, maybe I can copy y'all some DVDs!!!...It'll be a while though, so ya know. But, I'll keep you posted!)
ETA: HAVE FUN GROWNUPGROUPIE!!!! I can't wait to read your review (and if you have some imput from your friends behind the stage, that'd be cool too!)
Torrents are easy to download when lots of people want the same thing because you rely on other seeders and get the file from them. Torrents are really slow for me, though, because of my school's firewalls.
That isn't working for me, mabel. It's weird, the page opens, but nothing happens.
Hmmm, I wonder if that has anything to do w/ the fact that I already listened to it on my computer earlier today...like it's downloaded (but it didn't really download earlier, it just kind of played...incase you didn't get it yet, I'm totally computer illiterate!) Anyway, sorry it didn't work.
SPOILER from tonight:
I just read they played/are supposed to play Gloria tonight! I'm loving that song lately!! I really hope they play it at one of the concerts I'm catching.
I think it's not working because I have a mac actually. I sent the same link to someone else who said it works fine. So its just my computer.
Yep, that'd be it, becuase it's playing on Windows Media Player on this guy's website. Too bad!
