Honestly, he's probably heard just about everything! I'd just suggest trying to refrain from getting too grabby! Though you never know, I've read he gives hugs on request!
Should you meet them (and Bono in particular) be prepared to go into fangirl overload!!! I've always really enjoyed U2, but I swear, when they were spotted coming across the Manhattan Bridge, I turned into the biggest swoony girl!!! (Complete w/ "Ooooohhhh Bonooooo"s and everything!) I'd hate to think what I'd do if I was a foot away from him!
So I'm thinking "Sign my boob! Sign my boob!" = bad? I don't think I'll request a hug. THAT seems too fangirl...but if he offers, I won't stop him, y'know.
Unfortunately, it seems like most of the rehearsals were going on between 6pm-11pm. I'm going to be there around 4pm.
Have you seen the rumored rehearsal lists? I've got mixed feelings about it. They've apparently been rehearsing Elevati---ehhhhh..... And The Fly!! Woot. But really, Elevation? I just hope they don't do Discotechque. (Wow, I've mangled that. It's early.) Someone said it seemed like about 4 songs per album, which works for me, more or less. I suspect they'll be mixing up the set list a lot for each show!
Yeah, I'd say "Sign may boob." Is safely on the other side of the proverbial line! I don't think I could ever ask for a hug either, I'm just saying, he seems pretty easy going about most fangirly things.
Yeah, I'd been browsing the setlist posts. I'm not really sure how I feel about them. On the one hand, I don't want a blase' greatest hits tour, where they're just kind of going through the motions (like they really could just "go through the motions," but...). On the other hand, I've never seen a (full)U2 concert, so I want to hear Desire, Pride, Sunday Bloody Sunday, One, Bad, With or Without You, etc, etc, etc...I guess I'd be up for the 4 from each album thing, but really, how could they do that? That wouldn't leave a whole lot of room left for Bomb songs, and that's in total conflict w/ the rumors that they'll be playing the whole album. Although I don't believe they'll play the whole thing, I still think this tour will be a lot more Bomb heavy than Elevation was ATYCLB heavy. We shall see, I guess. Though, I have my doubts that what they play in the final dress will be quite different from the set they play by the time they end the first leg in Boston. That, and browsing over the Elevation setlists, they do seem to vary from night to night, especially when they're playing 3-4 nights in one city.

Bono is sex. Happy St.Patrick's Day, boys!
And in a way, I don't really want to know too much about what they may or may not play. I want to be surprised! I think if I know every intimate little detail about the stage/songlist etc., it would spoil it just a tad.

I'm about to head to GM Place girls!
Unfortunately, my loser lame-ass friend thinks that half an hour of lingering will be enough. I told her she could drop me off, thank you very much. I've got a digital camera and a tape recorder in hand. If at least I can hear part of their rehearsal, I'll be a darn happy gal!
Yay!
Go Tiff, go!!! Good luck! I want a full report on songs you hear and if you see any of the boys!
Ellie, while I understand your wanting to be suprised, I have serious doubts that the setlist being rehearsed now will be all that similar to the sets we'll be seeing in October on the 3rd leg.

Almost half of the set is different! (11 out of the 20 songs are the same in both).
Anyway, that took way too much time...*twiddling thumbs waiting for friend's bus to come in*...(just got a call, will doing lots more twiddling, since she's running SUPER late! *sigh*)
I'M BACK AND I MET BONO!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!
No I didn't. I missed him by 2 hours when he was leaving for lunch, and by the time I got there, the boys were inside eating a late dinner and rehearsing while I froze my ass off for 3 hours. But I met some cool U2 fans and I got to hear a couple of songs from afar. And I met the girl who found Bono's suitcase with all of his momentos from the Boy days! But no, I didn't see Bono in the flesh. And it makes me sad. I could cry. I was so close. No making fun, El.

I still heard him sing and give instructions to the boys. But still...
His testicles are still safe.

Well then why are you crying?? Dry your eyes, wimp.
*is miles and miles and miles away from U2*
I do know where they're likely to be making surprise appearances at the Vancouver nightspots tonight though. A-a-and I w-w-won't be therrrrre! *wails harder* If I didn't have that early flight, I would have stayed until they left.
I only heard them practice a few songs though. Wanna know which?
Broadway Legend Joined: 9/20/04
Not really.
Fine...which songs did you hear?
*plugs ears*
*realizes BWW is visual*
*shuts eyes*
*falls off chair*
*watches stars and chirping birds floating around Ellie's head*
I heard Bullet the Blue Sky, a medley of Vertigo and Stories for Boys (apparently Vertigo is its sequel??), and Zoo Station! Like, it sounded like the full video with some high-pitched woman and a deep-voiced guy. Sweeeet.

*get up from floor*
Wait...so they didn't play Vertigo in it's entirety??? And if it's the sequel to Stories for Boys (wtf?)...does that mean that it came after Stories for Boys...so does that mean they are NOT opening with Vertigo??
*falls over again*

Can you blame me?
Aww, where'd Mabel go? (And how was Alice Ripley yesterday anyway? I forgot to ask!) I've got more details about today (especially regarding that infamous "stolen" briefcase!) that would probably be of interest to her, and now she's gone! I just realized how little I know about the band--some of the fans I was hanging out with handed me my ass on a plate! (A big one.)
Someone said they were practicing...it was either The Ocean or Into The Heart (I think it's called) ad nauseum for the last few days, and is suspecting that it's one of those. I really doubt it though - I don't see why they wouldn't open with Vertigo.
Having said that, it makes sense that Stories for Boys is the prequel to Vertigo if you look at the lyrics:
Stories For Boys
There's a place I go
When I am far away.
There's a T.V. show
And I can play.
Sometimes when a hero takes me
Sometimes I don't let go
Oh, oh, oh.
There's a picture book
With colour photographs
There's a comic strip
That makes me laugh
Sometimes away he takes me
Sometimes I don't let go.
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
Stories for boys.
There's a place I go
And it's a part of me
There's a radio
And I will go
Sometimes a hero takes me
Sometimes I don't let go.
Stories for boys
Stories for boys
And then Vertigo:
Vertigo
Unos dos tres catorce!
Lights go down, it’s dark
The jungle is your head
Can’t rule your heart
A feeling is so much stronger than
A thought
Your eyes are wide
And though your soul
It can’t be bought
Your mind can wander
Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
Except you give me something I can feel, feel
The night is full of holes
As bullets rip the sky
Of ink with gold
They twinkle as the
Boys play rock and roll
They know they can’t dance
At least they know….
I can’t stand the beats
I’m asking for the cheque
The girl with crimson nails
Has Jesus round her neck
Swinging to the music
Swinging to the music
Oh oh oh oh
Hello hello
I’m at a place called Vertigo
It’s everything I wish I didn’t know
But you give me something I can feel, feel
Check mated
Oh yeah
Hours of fun…
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
All of this, all of this can be yours
Just give me what I want and no-one gets hurt….
Hello hello
We’re at a place called Vertigo
Lights go down and all I know
Is that you give me something
I can feel your love teaching me how
Your love is teaching me how, how to kneel…
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah. Or something. I don't know. Those fans are literally hard-core. One of those freaks is even flying from Vancouver to San Diego for the opening! I mean, what kind of loser would fly across the continent to see---hey, wait.
Anyway, so someone said they think it'll go, "Sometimes I don't let go, oh, oh, oh--" cut to "Hello, hello..." I heard Larry go apeSH*T with Vertigo today, but I can't say I know Stories for Boys too well.
Mabel? You around? I go out of town tomorrow but I wanna tell you the real saga about the suitcase legend! (Which I had heard about a long time ago, but this is the first time I found out what happened first hand from the person who found it!)
Hey Tiff...sorry things didn't work out better, but you still had a more fruitful trip than I did on my HoF jaunt! I just got back from the pub down the street w/ my friend from HS (also Tiff!) Anyway, the roomie's sleeping (got work early) so I don't want to be too much of a pain typing away. I'll probably be off until Sunday or so, since I've got company, and then I'm off to Boston Sat. afternoon. Alice was great (saw Michael Cerveris there and creepy John McDaniel from Rosie sat next to me on a couch in the bar for a while...eeeewww!!!) Talk to you later! Thanks for the report!
No prob, Mabel! I'm catching a 5am flight out to San Francisco and I come back on Saturday, so we'll catch up later! (PM me about payment, etc. when you get the chance okay?)
Oh, by the way, I've taken it upon myself to ask that you take it upon yourself to edjamacate me on everything you know about U2. I know the music. I know the basics about the boys. But this lady was saying, "Oh my God, YOU found the suitcase? That's legendary!" and I'm going, "A legendary what, ass?"
I'm sure you've already left for the airport, but I'll say have a safe flight anyway...
I honestly don't know all that much about the band. Not a crazy diehard or anything. I did, however, know *of* this mysterious suitcase. I still don't really know what the whole story was. Was it lost, stolen, etc?
Oh, and since you asked, in case anyone's interested about the Alice gig (and I feel we should have far more threadjacks on this thread!) I'm kind of liking Alice's new music. Definitely more rock than the Everything's Fine stuff, but it still totally suits her. She did a 14 song set of new songs (w/ two from EF: Violet Tree and Drive, which were both beautiful!). I don't know if you're at all familiar w/ her solo stuff, but "The Brother Song" kicked some serious ass! Shannon (her husband/drummer) went on this crazy drum solo (he always does one after this song, but Wednesday's was just out of control!)
Anyway, I guess that's about it. Have a nice Friday/weekend everyone!
Aw, Tiff, I'm sorry you missed Bono and the boys. That's so cool that you got to meet the briefcase person, though! And you got to hear them practicing. I didn't know that about Stories For Boys and Vertigo, though I guess I can see the parallels when reading the lyrics. That would be interesting to hear.
THREAD JACK...
I don't feel like starting another new thread for this, so I figured I'd just temporarily jack this one. I've justified it, since it's concert/music related.
So, my friend from high school was visiting me in NY on Thurs/Fri, and I must say, we had some serious good good luck going on Friday! She came in to go to an interview, and I could tell it was going to be a good day, since we had good train karma going first thing in the morning!
Her interview went great, and she got the position, including a possible job after she graduates and they'd pay for her grad school at NYU! Great way to start off the morning!!!
So, we head back downtown so she can change, and I popped on craigslist to see if there were any Gavin DeGraw tix for sale at face (since I was kind of interested in seeing the gig at the Roseland Ballroom. I saw GD at a benefit for Sh-K-Boom Records years ago, before he made it quasi-big, so I figured it'd be kind of cool to check him out again now. I have Chariot and like it; though I definitely prefer the Stipped version that came along w/ the CD...ANYWAY!) I saw someone selling 4 tix for face, sent her a quick email, and she called back right away. We were off to get the tix in Chelsea, good times! When we get there, it turns out neither of us had the exact change ($27) and as I was about the tell the woman to just keep the $30 ea. that we'd given her, she said, "Aw hell, just take them for $20." Woohoo!
It just seemed like everything was clicking. Good cheap food for lunch, kept hitting the trains, tix for a concert below face (in retrospect, since my friend seemed to be such a good luck charm, we probably should have tried the lotto for Avenue Q!!!)
Anyway, the concert was GA, and we figured we'd get there an hour before the doors opened. She was just in town for a day and a half, and it seemed stupid to camp out for hours to get a good spot. So, we ended up at the end of the line, about a block and a half away and began to resign ourselves to the fact that we'd have ****Ty spots, but at least we got cheap tix!
Once inside we had a grand ol' time making fun of the swoony girls w/ their I <3 Gavin shirts and watching the crew next to us get busted for drinking underage! Ahhh, the joys of watching teens squirm! I should note that I'm still 20 and shouldn't take such a high and mighty stance in mocking them, but really, when you're obviously not any older than 17, it's probably not the best to camp out in a group of 7 or 8, standing in plain view in an open spot on the edge of the floor, screaming at the top of your lungs how awesome it is that you scored some drinks. Either keep a low profile where you are, or blend into the crowd. That security guy was intense though! Too funny.
During the opening act, we decided to join the crowd on the floor (we'd been camping out on the couches on the edge, wiped out from all of our running around). And all of a sudden, my friend goes "Oh my GOD, I swear I just saw (we'll call him Skip Marsh, to protect the innocent )" a guy we went to high school w/. I didn't see him at first, but good lord when I did, I was convinced it was him. I've seen people that I thought looked like someone I knew, but on a second glance, it's always like "nah, not even close!" This guy looked just like Skip Marsh! His face looked exactly the same. His posture was similar. He was wearing clothes that Skip would have worn. Gavin DeGraw was probably someone he would have liked. And the kicker, and quite possibly one of the funniest things I've heard (more from her delivery than anything else) was my friend shouting: "Oh my god! He's got hyperextended knees. Skip.Has.Hyperextended.Knees." So, we were totally convinced it was him. He even walked past us a couple times, and I swear he did that "Hmmm, do I know you" *starts to tentitively walk over, and then leaves again* Eventually, my friend stopped him and asked "Is your name Skip?" and he replied "No, but you can call me Skip if you want to." Hahaha. He totally must have thought it was such a pick-up line, but it totally wasn't. What the hell, we ended up getting free drinks out of it!!!
The concert was pretty good. I swear GD was totally pissed. You could really tell during the songs, but during his between song banter, he seemed a tad bit tipsy. It was really fun though. We were kind of under this overhead thing, and I think that kind of messed w/ the sound, but good times were had by all. Free drinks, decent music, fun swoony girls to mock! Ahhhh, a good night on so many levels!
Sorry this got long. I don't really don't expect anyone to actually read through the whole thing, but once I got going, I just couldn't stop!!!
That sounds awesome, Mabel! What a great day. I love it when everything seems to go right. I'm glad you and your friend had so much fun. I like Gavin DeGraw, sounds like a cool concert. And cheap tickets, which is always good!
Yeah, it was fun...that was so weird w/ that guy. I know they say everyone has their twin out there, well we found (what'd I call him) Skip Murphy?? Oh, Skip Marsh. Yeah, Skip's twin!
Oh, and Elphie, are you going to be trying for tix tomorrow? I'm so incredibly tempted to join you (if you'd want the company) should you get tix. My head's telling me I shouldn't (along w/ my checkbook) but I really want to!!! I'm almost tempted to try to buy a pair of tix myself, and sell them on eBay to pay for as much of my own tix as possible. I hate scalpers, but in my mind, I've justified that if I'm taking the money and putting it straight back into buying tix, and I'm only doing it once, it's somehow "less wrong." Anyway, if you have AIM and see this before tomorrow Elphie, drop me a PM. Maybe we can sort it out before the tix go on sale.
POTENTIAL SPOILER AHEAD...
Hey ladies, I was reading that this is the rumored setlist for opening night...If you ask me, it seems a bit far-fetched, but I guess you never know! (I think it seems a little ATYCLB heavy/HTDAAB, classics lite)
City of Blinding Lights
The Electric Co.
An Cat dubh
Into The Heart
Beautiful Day
Miracle Drug
Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
Love and Peace Or Else
Elevation
Stuck In a Moment...
Yahweh
Gloria
One
Where the Streets Have No Name
Running to Stand Still
Zoo Station
The Fly
Vertigo
All Because of You
Sunday Bloody Sunday
40
I'm actually pretty excited about a bunch of the rarities (Electric Co., An Cat dubh/Into The Heart, Gloria, Running to Stand Still, ENDING with 40!!!) but not so thrilled about the absense of a bunch of classics. I can't believe they won't do I Will Follow or Out of Control at most every show. I'll also be kind of peeved to not hear Pride, UTEOTW, All I Want is You, Desire, BAD!!!, etc, etc.) I'm sure the set isn't set in stone, and will be much different by the time I see them in Boston, and by the time we have our big jaunt out in October on the third leg. Ahhh, we shall see come Monday!!!

How can they do An Cat Dubh etc., but not Desire?
My little head is spinning.
