How interesting, the USPS is considering cutting a delivery day. It sounds so odd to me.

WASHINGTON - Massive deficits could force the post office to cut out one day of mail delivery per week, the postmaster general told Congress on Wednesday.

Postmaster General John E. Potter asked lawmakers to lift the requirement that the agency deliver mail six days a week.

I think they should cut two days a week at least. Who needs all that junk mail.

I order so much stuff on-line. I already hate that they don't deliver on Sunday. I'm not sure I'd be cool with this. I understand they they're losing money, but I'd rather just pay more then have to lose another delivery day.

*Thanks Q.*

I am not opposed to the idea if the post offices remain open and it doesn't cut any jobs. I wouldn't mind not getting my mail on a Saturday. Plus, less impact towards the environment.

The way I look at it, delivering mail only 5 times a week gives them one less opportunity to be inefficient. My mail carrier is AWFUL.

If they did away with Saturday delivery then a good many employees just might get weekends off or at least two days off together. The carriers are already on a special day off schedule but the rest of the employees have split days off for the most part. Even people with 20 years service can't get weekends off.

UPS only delivers Monday through Friday, and I'm living with that. I hardly use the USPS anyway. I do almost everything online.

You can definitely get Saturday delivery with UPS....you pay extra for it, but you can definitely schedule it.

I don't think eliminating a day of delivery would cut down on the amount of junk mail, sadly. You'd just get more of it the other 5 days of the week.

Deliver???
I already have to walk to my post office to pick up my packages! They don't even make the effort to see if I'm home!
I wonder if this is just in Washington Heights or all over Manhattan

in office a week and the obama administration is already cutting services to the american public. the rumor is that he'll personally read your mail on the 6th day and tell you what he think you need to know about it.

Great, just what we need. Another day off for some psycho who hates his fellow workers and is planning to go postal on them.

Has any one considered how many jobs will be lost by cutting one day of service?

You're funny papa. The government has been considering this for years to save money. The carriers union didn't want it to happen because without the Saturday delivery the T6 carriers would take a pay cut. It's a little compicated to explain but at least once a week your regular carrier will not be delivering. Miss Pennywise you're right about better efficiency. There wouldn't be substitute carriers to cover the rotating day off schedules because each carrier would be on their routes all five days.

From what I know from my friend who works there they have lots of people who are temporary hires who know they weren't permanent. This may just save jobs. It won't cut back on revenue it will cut back on expenditures.

if the last eight years have taught me anything it's that anything that happens anywhere on earth is the fault of the president. anything.

I can do without one of the mail delivery days. I hate getting mail.

But look out-I predict that in the future there will be NO mail delivery. We will all have go and retrieve our own mail.

Your right Jane, that's what it's leading up to eventually. Papa the Post Office woes can't be blamed on Obama. It's more to do with the internet, the fact that people don't send Christmas cards like they used to and no one seems to write letters. Basically the only first class mail is from your bill collectors and there are so many paying their bills on line.

As far as Obama goes Papa we'll have other stuff to blame on him.

Our PO is open from 9 to 4 only on weekdays and the lone clerk goes to lunch from noon to 1:30. Seriously.

I could live without mail being delivered on Saturday. I never get anything, anyway.

But I'll say that not delivering on a weekday might hurt some businesses.
