i think that given certin things that have come up recently, this movie is a very bad idea.
some people are saying that no one on the plane took it down, that our military took it down and it's causing controversy from both sides... i think this movie will cause alot of conflict.

Personally, I don't feel quite ready to see this movie yet. I was in 8th grade on 9/11, and almost a hundred people in my small neighborhood alone were lost.
My dad and his company were on their way out with some civilians they were helping and made it to the door on their way out. Then they a group in need of assisstance on the stairs, send the group they were helping on out, and ran back up again. The civilians got out. My dad and the firefighters working under him never came back down the stairs.
My mom's best friend lost her husband, another firefighter, that day as well. He never even made it into the WTC, for he was struck by a jumper and was killed instantly. The rest of his house were alright as they never made it in after he was killed.
One of my dad's guys was going to be married the first of October. Another had a baby due in December.
Three weeks to the day after 9/11, I "celebrated" my 13th birthday without my dad, whose birthday I shared. I had just moved into my house in November of 2000, and my dad had some of his fellow firefighters help get the house in decent shape so we could move in. Out of the approximately 3 dozen guys that had pretty much rebuilt the inside of my house, only 5 were left when the first anniversary of moving day rolled around.
That day plays over and over in my mind continuously, and I live with the results of it every day. The stories I could tell about that day could go on for hours.
Yet despite my own unreadiness to see this film, I am glad they made it. Yes, it is relatively soon ofter the event. But everyday I face people who have "moved on", who have been able to completely get past the impact of that day, and can no longer see its significance. So long as the film is a respectful tribute, rather than a thrilling exploitation of what happened that day, I am all for movies such as these. They provide people, whether they had their own significant experiences regarding that day or not, to connect with what happened and those who were victims of that day.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:15pmThey didn't say much; they interviewed a few people, just to show the different viewpoints on whether it's too soon or not, and showed a very quick clip from the movie -- one that looked like it was in slow motion?

i would hope it would be a tasteful, accurate movie, but when i saw the trailer on tv, i have to admit i thought the same thing, that it might just be some action explosion filled money-making movie.
my condolences on your dad and his friends. my dad is also a fire fighter, although not in ny.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:20pmAbba--there are many theories about what happened that day to varying degrees of controversy. This is but one version of what is believed to have happened. I wonder if we will ever know the complete truth about that day.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:23pmi'm pretty sure it will be a respectful film, especially if they wanted to ok it with the families. i plan on seeing it friday night (which probably isn't the best idea since im flying to the city the next afternoon...)

chloe, i'll go back and read the review... i just kind of jumped in from page one.
jerby, thank you that's what i was trying to say
i'm just afraid some people are going to really try to stir things up... right after it happened, everyone had their own theories as to what happened and the government did this the government did that and some people got really out of hand with it.

I'm not ready for it and I don't think I'll ever be ready for it. This is one event I have no desire to revisit.
I'm actually quite content with thinking of 9/11 in the abstract.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:29pmTrue, abba, but I think that we should be asking questions. We should be having discussions. That's both the power of this country and of art. It's a sensitive subject and the wounds are still sore. But, it's vital. Especially when so many decisions are made based on what happened.

As with a lot of issues today, I have a feeling that the most controversy will be stirred up by those who haven't actually seen the film, which doesn't address any of the conspiracy theories as far as I know. This quote sums up the review pretty well:
The first and most dominant thing that strikes you about "United 93" is its tone. Though the events it chronicles arouse overpowering emotions, the film itself moves with the raw, yet composed austerity of a cinema verite documentary.
But "United 93" can hardly be called clinical or dispassionate. It merely recognizes that its story carries such impact that any gratuitous flourish would vulgarize the memory of those it seeks to honor. By refusing to pander to our feelings, "United 93" ultimately wins them over

well we should be asking questions and having discussions, but what i remember after it happened was that i couldn't get anyone to shut up about "it's this person's fault!" "it's that person's fault!"
i also remember a full out fight in the courtyard one day durring lunch because two students had different opinions as to what had happened and why.
discussions and questions are good, especially with something that so many people have such an emotional tie to, like this, but it;s sad when something like this causes so much conflict when it should be bringing people together.
something awful happened. but take that something awful and use it to help those who were affected, not go around and tell everyone they're wrong beacuse they dont think it happened exactly the way you think it did. does it really matter exactly what happened that day? i mean it doesn't bring those people back...

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:51pmWell, hopefully this film will do more healing and resolving than it does any negative results. And, it sounds like it truly honors those people on that plane. That's an important thing, too.

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:53pmhopefully you're right, and it will serve to honor them... because no matter how the plane was brought down or what happened on the plane, they still lost their lives

Posted: 4/25/06 at 10:55pmI honestly don't see this movie as anything but propaganda and exploitation. While the filmmakers may call it honoring the victims, if you ask me, they're just trying to make a profit off of 9/11.

I unfortunately saw the movie and its pornography. It is disgraceful and has more than a few fabricated things put in for "dramatic effect". Hey did anyone ever think that these people are scared to hell and they fight back to save their lives and they failed! I'm sorry but 40 people in that situation are not going to turn into these American patriots willing to give their lives to advert what they didn't even know what they were flying into. DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE - HOLLYWOOD MADE IT BECAUSE THEY KNEW THEY WOULD BE CONTROVERSY AND HOPE TO MAKE MILLIONS OFF OF 9/11. If you have to, sneak in but DO NOT PAY. And im a new yorker and it made me want to throw up. If Americans need a movie like this to remind them of 9/11 - like we'd forget in 5 years than its a sad day for this nation. And the fact that the families of the dead agreed to movie - why wouldn't they, it portrays their loved ones as hereos wouldn't you agree to do it then. BOTTOM LINE - I AM NOT FOR CENSURSHIP LET IT RUN IN 3000 THEATRES BUT DO NOT SEE IT, don't let hollywood make a fool out of you.

Now i don't think it was explotitive as far as its narrative (def not cinema verite - hardly) but it is something that was created to make money by a Major Studio in hollywood and now that is explotative

There is a part of me that is 'scared' to give money to this movie. In a way, I want to pay for another movie and go watch this one. But my good conscience won't let me do that.
A part of me is telling me not to go and another part is telling me to go. I think I'm gonna just have to give in and give it a shot otherwise it will make me crazy hearing people talk about it.
