I wish they held it together but understand why they walked off.Bill is such an ignorant blowhard!

If I had the chance to go toe to toe with Bill on National TV you'd have to carry me off the set. I wouldn't stop.
I was watching this morning and I'm sure the "Powers" at The View loved the fact that Joy and Whoopi walked off because now that will be covered on all the entertainment shows ad nauseum! For Bill to make a blanket statement about all Muslims was just wrong and riot inciting! Plus- he was so smug!
Someone told me that Barbra Walters apologized to Bill on WHoopi's and Joy's behalf. This better not be true!
O'Reilly is indeed a blowhard, prone to making incendiary comments. If they're not capable of dealing with him, they shouldn't invite him on the show. In my opinion, they come across as overly emotional. I think he played them, and big time, though they will certainly get publicity for this. To constrast, look up clips of Jon Stewart's segments with O'Reilly. Stewart handles him much better.
If Olbermann had been on the show, and Hasselbeck and/or Shepard walked off, this board would be crucifying them.
^^True^^
Smug? Whoppi and Joy are the personification of the word.
All the talk surrounding their walk-off should overshadow the debut of The Talk, which premieres next Monday on CBS.

I think it was planned. Bill has been on The View many times, so they know what to expect from him. Also, Whoopi has appeared on Bill's show and had good debate with him.

..and David Letterman. Brilliant. Whatever you do don't walk off. He is loving that and you know it!
I agree that walking off was dumb (though not as dumb as his remark). It's a talk show; sit and talk.
Though how anyone can call Whoopi and Joy the personification of the word "smug" while Elisabeth Hasselbeck draws breath simply baffles me.
Well, I didn't mean to exclude any of them. It's just that they were the two that walked off. They're all smug!
The only thing walking off accomplished was handing more ammunition to O'Reilly, Faux News and the other right-wringing wackos. Besides, Bill hardly said anything other than "70% of Americans..." over and over again. The appropriate response would be that the 70% of Americans who responded to that particular poll are most likely not familiar with Muslims or religious extremists. If we were to ban places of worship from operating near sites of violence in the name of religion, it would wipe out most of the Christian churches in the US.
I was watching it live. It was good live TV.
romantico, she semi apologized for them walking off and then tried to clear up what he said. She then tried to make him distinguish between all Muslims and extremist Muslims. here is the whole thing:

Thanks for posting that. Still,if I were Joy and Whoopi I'd let her know they do not appreciate her speaking for them.
I actually didn't take as much of an an apology as her saying that the conversation shouldn't have gotten to the point where they would walk off set. I have actually walked away from conversations that got to that point so I almost look at it the same way. Yes, they are on television but I like that they weren't having it and decided they didn't want to go on discussing it with them. I had no problem with it.

Bill O'Reilly loves to hear his narcisstic, bullying, morally corrupt, and ignorant self talk. People like him fan the flames of ignorance to a sadly largely uniformed and a not-critically- thinking public. But it's also emblematic of the intense gulf in culture and other social divisions in America. I would imagine him in apartheid South Africa spewing venom in the media, but I would much rather love see him end up facing the wrath of the SADF and SAP. Are people like him deeply conscious of how diverse, like Christianity and Judaism, Islam and Muslims are? You can't be a faith existing for over 2000 years and not have diversities within it.
Also, there are families of the September 11, 2001 victims who DO favor an Islamic community center (it's not just a mosque) near the site.

Which is always the ad hominem attack people use against women expressing strong opinions. "Calm down! Don't be so hysterical!" Ugh.
Not that I think this was much more than a publicity stunt, but still. It's the principle of the thing.
"Which is always the ad hominem attack people use against women expressing strong opinions."
That's what you got from that clip, 'women expressing strong opinions'? I guess we saw two entirely different clips.
Well, that was entertaining.
Although, as has been said upthread, they played right into O'Reilly's hands.
I was watching it live too, and he was totally out of control. He wouldn't let them get a word in, and he was dead wrong. That being said, they should have held it together and not walked off. But I can understand why they did. I've walked out of my own house before to avoid completely going off on my brother in law when he gets going on his stupid uber-conservative opinions.
Jesse Ventura was on Joy's show last night and I agree with him regarding the mosque and the constitution.(and Bill being a spineless puke)

See- they even did a segment about this on The Today Show this morning so it even crossed networks. I'm sure Bill Gedde and Barbara Walters are ecstatic!
In my opinion, it was unprofessional to have walked off the set.
I have no problem with them walking off set and I wish more of the media will follow their example. I'm sick of the "main stream liberal media" giving so much air time to people with such clearly hateful views. When O'Reilly says something as hateful and biased about Muslims...why argue with him? It's not like he's suddenly going to change his mind. He's just going to spew more nonsense so why even entertain it.
It's like when The Washington Post recently said they were going to cover "both sides" of the recent rash of gay suicides.
I know it's not going to change because it gets people worked up and sells newspapers and advertising. But the media is just stirring the pot. And I applaud Whoopi and Joy for having enough and walking away.
