I have every album Eva Cassidy ever recorded. LOVE her.
I also really like Adam Lopez (who has a recorded 5+ octave range) and Edson Cordeiro (coming in close with more than 4 octaves), and I have been a huge fan of a singer called Kristin Banks for YEARS. Great folksy-chick stuff...
Nickel Creek
Imgoen Heap (although I guess she's rising, too).
Ben Kweller
natalie i is gorg in person. a very charming girl. i wrapped her in a sari once, and i had no idea who she was. just a very pretty, tiny girl.
I love this thread. Almost all of my favorites are virtual unknowns thanks to my brother. He does a little independent scouting and promotion and is constantly hooking me up with new stuff to listen to. My tops are
Marc Broussard (We're actually friends with him. GREAT guy and lots of fun to party with.)
Will Hoge
Citizen Cope
David Ryan Harris
Dave Barnes
Sons of William (Friends of Marc's. The lead singer used to play with Marc.)
The Trews
Leona Naess
Amy Fairchild
I'd hardly call Ben Harper and Guster unknowns. I mean yeah sure they aren't on MTV, but they have respectable carrers and some mainstream cross-over appeal.
The Mae Shi are definitly in the unknowns, The Mountain Goats would be another. And I know he's a star in Canada but Sam Roberts hasn't quite made a huge impact in the states....yet!

The reason I put Guster on there is because if you walk to up to people on the street and ask them if they know of this band, I bet yout 98% of them will say "no!" I mean, I didn't even know who they were until a few days ago (which isn't saying much . . . but still!)
Well I can promote some of my friends on the Toronto music scene:
Peter Katz
Mike Evan
Raha
Gavin Slate
they all have myspace accounts where you can hear their stuff.
Akiva
I love Eva Cassidy.
Shawn Colvin had a break-out hit in the mid 90s, but most people don't follow her career. One of my favorites!
Nanci Griffith is not so unknown in the folk/blue grass music, but most of the general public have no idea who she is.
