When did it become OK...(fill in the blanks)
When did it become OK to wear jeans to the theater
When did it become OK to break up with someone...ON THE PHONE
When did it become OK to wear the American Flag as a pashmina (or scarf or poncho, or whatever some athletes in Athens were doing)

It became ok to wear jeans to the theater in the 1980's when the British mega musical arrived.
People wore the American flag as shirts in the 1970's.
it never becam OK to wear jeans to the theater...
I'm OK with the Olympic thins -- if I trained and won a gold for my country -- I'd wrap myself in the flag
It became okay to wear jeans to the theatre when jeans became what every American started wearing and when you're out all day exploring NYC and don't have time to go back and change your clothes to go see a show.

I always wear jeans to the theater. More importantly, I dont talk during the show, or keep a phone on, nor do I unwrap candy
A better question should be when did it become ok for theater audiences to talk during shows, answer phones during shows and so on

that was a great thread a month or so ago -- I can't remember the name -- something like rude behavior....it went so beyond those annoying, yet far to common happenings...

Yea I saw that thread
I hate Rude Behavior in the Theater
When I saw "Master Harold" last season, I swear the four ladies in front of me had a picnic basket & scarier still were the wine glasses. I'm all about a drink, but please not at your seat

Jeans were originally designed for 'working clothes.' Then, they were picked up in the fifties as casual wear, and into the sixties as a uniform by the 'counter culture.' THEN, in the seventies, Ms. Calvin Kline (et al.) introduced the concept of jeans as 'fashion.' Once that got implanted into people's minds, they became acceptable as nothing more than a cloth of choice. It's an interesting thing to see someone in jeans at a show and think their being very casual, but then realize they might have just spent 500 dollars on them to 'dress for the theatre.'
I'd still like to know when rudeness and dismissiveness became defendable character traits.

about the flag...normally it's a crime to burn it, and possible a crime if it touches the ground, so I don't get it that they can use it as a sweat rag.

Wearing a flag is against protocol, especially if you cut or folded the flag in any way to wear it. People think it's patriotic today, but I'm pretty sure it started out as a counterculture statement.
But then again, even leaving the flag out during a storm is against the rules, as is contuing to fly it when it's damaged. Flag burning, however, is perfectly fine, because it's the way to dispose of old flags.

Absolutely... it's so sad that some men just don't have the proverbial balls

It's just sad that some people are jerks.
It's still not as bad as doing it on a post it.
Has that happened to you?

This is true, Matt

No, this happened to a good friend of mine named Carrie.
Oh, the poor darling!
Yeah, she was pretty upset. It's okay though. She ended up with the guy we all knew she was going to end up with.
Oh, well that's good!
I just saw her the other day and she was struttin' around in her new Gap jeans like she owns the place. I think she's really happy so it's all good.
How long ago was this Post-It note fiasco?
Hmmm. I think it happened last September. Right around that time.
God, how rough. I hope her BF at the time is living in the gutter.
