I'd rather be overdressed than underdressed.
...in most situations
Try seeing someone wear soccer shorts and a tank top at the Metropolitan Opera House for an evening performance of Tosca.
When designers started charging as much as an orchestra seat to a Broadway show for a pair of jeans, then jeans became acceptable to wear in the theatre.
Ooooh....good point, Mister Matt.
Exactly Mister Matt. Add sneakers and jogging suits to that mix.
Not really a good point, Mister Matt. How many of the people who wear jeans to the theater do you honestly think paid more than $40 for them?
Yeah, well....halter tops and shorts are kinda out-of-line.
I've seen performers actually comment to people at the stage door in a very sarcastic way "I LOVE your tank top" etc... I love it.
I definitely appreciate it when the audience shows the consideration to dress appropriately. It's when they get up and try to leave during the curtain call that makes me want to kick their asses.
had to chime in seriosuly on this topic.... for the most part i dress down, shorts, tank tops, sneakers, jeans, etc. especially on weekends...and since i live in miami dressing down to keep cool and to feel comfortable is my goal. but when i go to a theatre event i tend to dress up because im always dressing "down" so i kind of make it an "event". im not saying a tux or anything, but a nice pair of shoes, slacks and a comfortable button down shirt....sometimes it does make a difference.
Rathnait - Nearly every international tourist in jeans paid well over $40.
And what percentage of the audience would THAT be?
I'm one of those tourists who has to walk around the city all day before and after seeing shows, and I don't even think I need to defend wearing jeans to the theater. If I want to get dressed up, I will, but it shouldn't be mandatory.
As I've said in other similar threads, it is possible to wear nice looking comfortable pants and nice looking comfortable shoes to walk around the city all day.
I would rather have people in those seats than not--just because of what they are wearing. In the end, does it really matter? If you like dressing up for the theatre--than do so. But, this thread is getting very snobby, and theatre isn't an artform that can literally afford to be that way.
And, if we are going to compare theatre to church, would turning away someone for wearing jeans to Easter Sunday be the Christian thing to do? (Judging them isn't either). What would Jesus do?
It's not about being snobby. It's about respect for your fellow theatergoers, actors and the whole tradition of theater.

When Did It Become OK....
To use hairspray on a bus (aerosal)!
You show respect in how you behave--not in the false, surface level manner of what clothing you wear.
The fact that people are in my audience when I am in a show (and have proper behavior) is all the respect I need. I'm concerned with their hearts and minds--not their closets and wallets.
Before I moved here, and would come to visit and see shows, it was just built into my schedule to go back and change before a show. It wouldn't even occur to me to go in my "walking around" clothes. And if I wasn't going to have time to change, then I would wear clothes nice enough for the theater when I left the hotel. It's not hard to find comfortable shoes that look nice. Same with pants or dresses. And believe me, my wallet never has been thick. It's not about that at all.
I have plenty of respect for my fellow theater goers, and they should have enough respect for me to understand that I am not trying to impress anyone, that I have been on a bus or train for several hours and didn't feel like being in dressy clothes. They are jeans, not sweatpants.
Saying that not wearing jeans to the theater in order to "respect... your fellow theatergoers" is ridiculous. It's none of "my fellow theatergoers" buisness what the hell I'm wearing, but like I said, I have enough decency to wear jeans and a nice shirt, and that shouldn't offend anyone- and I persoally couldn't care less if it does.
I don't understand why jeans have become such a wardrobe staple. I'm seriously sick of seeing them everywhere. This is just another place where I don't want to see them anymore.
I hate bumping into things.
