How about the opera?
I frown on that, because I do see the opera as elitist, but I do want to hear opinions. After all, opera involves sitting in the dark for a few hours too...

An opera is just a musical with subtitles. It's still not a fashion show.

But then what good are fashion shows if you don't have any place to wear what's shown? Another of life's mysteries.
I think we should just come to the conclusion that you can wear what you want.
Well, it used to be that theater was a rare and exciting experience, only for the best. I talked to my Dad, and he would get dressed in his best, and go to the theatre, and certainly tip the usher who would guide him to his seat. The world was a calmer place, and people felt that the theater was one of life's few pleasures, and should be treated specially.
I've worn jeans to a matinee (because it's the middle of the day), but for an evening show? Never.
Also, when did it become okay to become inconsiderate? I feel in today's youth, it's amost encouraged to have no respect and slam the door in people's faces. What happened to basic etiquette and common courtesy?

It became aceptable to wear jeans in 1968, when HAIR opened on Broadway.
In my opinion, the acceptability of jeans depends on the nature of the show.
Recent shows I would wear jeans to:
RENT
AVENUE Q
URINETOWN
ASSASSINS
in other words, the more off-beat, "Off-Broadway moved to ON Broadway" shows.
Shows I would not wear jeans to:
THE PRODUCERS
42ND STREET
WICKED
FIDDLER
PHANTOM
In other words, the big, traditional Broadway shows.
i just figure that if i'm going to spend that kind of money on a ticket to a show, it should include nice clothes and a nice dinner!
but what if you broke the piggy on the ticket? you may have to settle for jeans and Subway! And that's fine!
I'm in the "wear whatever makes you feel comfortable" camp. I'll take the quiet, jeans wearing theatre lover with his back pack and dirt on his shoes from exploring the city over the suit wearing, cell phone ringing jerk any day of the year!
I saw what Matt wears to the theatre--he looked adorable!
I don't care what you wear Jerby, as long as you get out those clothes quickly when I tell you to.
i guess the question should be:
what do you wear under your jeans to the theater????
boxer briefs
I just don't understand why jeans are SO prominent in our society. Have some imagination, people!!!
I never wear jeans to the theatre.
I worked in the Box Office at my theatre for some time. On occasion someone would call in and ask if there was a dress code. I would always reply, "Business casual is the standard now. I usually wear a tie, though"
Now I walk around the front of house, and I've seen sweatpants, shorts, and flip-flops wandering around my foyer.
at least these people are going to the theatre, CKeaton.
Weak argument, Matt. Those same people I'm sure have nice shirts and pants in their closets for other occasions.

I've enjoyed dressing up, as well as down - to me it's pretty much an individual experience, depending on how you wish to feel. For those that need others around them to share in the same experience, thank god country clubs still exist.
Many of these people would be shocked if I wore gross gym shorts to their church on Easter Sunday. It's a respect for the institution of theatre that I look for.
I agree that it's very nice that they're there in the first place, but seriously people, you're out on the town. I don't like where I see this country going. Looking sloppy in public is no longer the outlier. It's the trend.
I have NO problem with people that look neat. It's possible to be well put together in jeans... Hell, it's even possible to put together a nice picture in shorts. Just don't go to a place of culture in sweatshorts with your balls hanging out.

Oh my, I don't even WANT to know where this conversation may now head - so to speak.
oops.
*smacks forehead*

I have worn jeans to a show before... I don't think the argument is so much the fact that people are wearing jeans, it's the fact that they don't look presentable. I've been known to wear a nice pair of jeans, heels and a nice top to a show.... and I've also been known to be dressed to the nines for a show.
I've been appalled at seeing how some people come dressed to shows.. One kid (who had rushed tickets) was denied entrance at Chicago at the Ambassador because of the way he was dressed.... well that and the fact that one of the ushers heard him talking and saying that he hadn't showered in 2 days because he didn't have a hotel while he was here...
I remember going to see Rent when it first opened. I hadn't been to a show in a few years before that.... I showed up in a dress, and heels (nothing outlandish, it was a simple slip dress) as I was taught that you get dressed up for the theatre, and I was shocked to see how everyone else was dressed! I actually turned to my aunt (who had gone with me) and said "I feel over dressed... when did it become okay to go to a broadway show looking like you just rolled out of bed?"
Oy.
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
