re: War of the Worlds

Yes this was quite the movie, as I said before. Miss. Fanning does a amazing job, as well as Mr. Cruise. See it!

re: War of the Worlds

I've been waiting for this since the first trailer I saw - glad to see it is a Spielberg picture and even though the little strange man is in it, I will go... Maybe the aliens will force him to take anti-depressant drugs...

re: War of the Worlds

Just booked my ticket for Sunday. I'm strangely unexcited by the prospect of the movie though.

re: War of the Worlds

THat movie was good? I thought it would be bad.

re: War of the Worlds

Why didn't you think it would be good? Because Cruise is in it?
#31

re: War of the Worlds

More because Spielberg directed it. His films have been somewhere between moderately bad and laugh out loud awful for the past 11 years.

Dakota Fanning is amazing in anything she's in...even that flop HIde and Seek she was good

re: War of the Worlds

The reviews are in and they are, to say the least, lukewarm. What a total shock.

re: War of the Worlds

Popculture,
I don't know what reviews you are reading.. but Variety, Los Anegeles Times, NYT and all the locl tv reviews have been great. The movie rocks. A great Sci-Fi summer movie. Second only to Batman this summer.

re: War of the Worlds

Me and all my friends are boycotting it because of Crazy Cruise.

re: War of the Worlds

I thought it was great. I'm not the biggest Cruise fan, but I still loved it. Dakota Fanning was excellent as always. And it seemed to get very good reviews based on what I've seen.

re: War of the Worlds

I'm Cruise'd out at the moment, so I'm not in a huge hurry to see it. I'm sure I'll catch it in a few weeks. I have heard that it's very good though. I do enjoy Tim Robbins, and Dakota Fanning is very talented (though she tends to freak me out a bit). Isn't Cruise playing something of a dead-bead dad? I rather like him when he's playing a jackass (Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, etc).

The best critic in the business, Stephanie Zacharek of Salon.com, crucified it:

"the ugliest film of the summer..."
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Hi Borstal boy. I have not seen you in a while. The movie is great. I hope you don't pay too much attention to that stupid review.

re: War of the Worlds

NY critics ripped it but I take Dame's word

The movie has to make a gallzillion dollars to break even as Cruise gets 10 % of the gross. Nobody is worth this. Now you know why you (not me) pays astronomical admission & concession fees

re: War of the Worlds

Yes Dakota can sing...she sang a little in the movie...Tom cannot..unless he was just acting.

re: War of the Worlds

No, the NY Times review was very respectable, and more than respectful of Mr. Spielberg as a master of "visual storytelling." They make it sound unmissable, and point to specific sequences as haunting.

I heard on the news there's backlash because the film consciously invokes the mood post 9/11. But I haven't actually read that. It's virtually impossible to create a film about mass destruction that does not in some way evoke the horrific images which are seared into our collective consciousness. Of course shrinks, whom the film's STar disdains, might say that it allows us to work through and release our still pent-up feelings. We'll see.

re: War of the Worlds

I liked it. I give it a thumbs up. But, it does have some flaws in the storytelling I felt. I thoughts Cruise was good. I thought Dakota was stunning. I thought it was technically stunning and filled with haunting images and sequences.

I think even Spielberg's weakest films are above average. There is always something to enjoy.

re: War of the Worlds

Oh, Please, Borstalboy - if I listened to critics I'd miss out on all the best shows. I happen to have a particular loathing for Tom Cruise at the moment - but I'll see this movie, because, as others have stated: its Spielberg, and it happens to be one of those stories that I've loved since I was a child - so of course, I gotta see this version, also.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

re: War of the Worlds

It's a double whammy for me. I don't like Tom Cruise and I don't like Steven Spielberg films (Duel, Close Encounters and Jaws are the exceptions). I'm passing on this one.

re: War of the Worlds

Saw it last night, and thought it was excellent. Certain scenes are permanently etched in my head. I just have a few questions (possible spoilers):

1) I think they explained this, but why did they have the only car that worked?

2) The character of Robbie didn't make sense to me. Why did he feel absolutely compelled to join the military and see the aliens, to the point of abandoning his family?

Other than that, I think Cruise naysayers are stuck on this one. He was great, and blended in surprisingly well with the blue-collar background. Fanning was FANTASTIC. This girl deserves an Oscar nomination. Now. It's just amazing how she just knows how to do things.

re: War of the Worlds

***possible spoilers***

1. The mechanics did something special to fix the car; something about salt? I didn't quite catch it, but Ray suggested something to the mechanic that worked. Other people did have cars that worked because there were people in cars on the ferry. There was something special you had to do to fix them.

2. Robbie seemed like a pretty angry kid. He was bitter towards his dad throughout the movie (calling him Ray, not greeting him when they got to his house, getting into a fight while playing catch, etc.), and I guess taking out all his built-up frustration on the aliens seemed appealling to him. I just saw him as an angry teenager with lots of hormones and needing an outlet (which he found in the military).

re: War of the Worlds

I saw it.

I broke my no Tom Cruise rule. But hey, my friend who I haven't seen in months invited me to come and I wanted to catch up.

I gotta say, the movie was good. Dakota Fanning is incredible!

Tom Cruise.... I really don't like him. Not because of this Katie Holmes thing but the only movie of his that I ever enjoyed was Jerry Maguire. He's good with the jokes of War of the Worlds, but I wanted to snort in some drama scenes. Example: You know when

SPOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOILER

the spaceships come out of the ground..and he starts running and what not and then he hides behind a wall and starts panting. Hi, that was really bad panting. And just other stuff in general.

That being said, I did like the movie. Some parts were very much too Hollywood for me...you know, turn around CRASH turn CRASH turn CRASH, but it was very very good.

And it was all worth seeing The Island preview.
