the game show sketch was awful. However the cold opening was awesome
Made the foot ball costume, the base ball bats used in the monologue, the props for girl Friend talk show. Also made a Golden Globe Award for Andy Samberg to carry in but I guess he decided not to use it. Oh yeah and the foam camera Melissa whopped that cameraman with and then threw when she was playing the Senator.
Harris, I agree. The Game Show sketch was very much trying to revive the Hidden Valley Ranch character from her first time on the show.
Very nice of Melissa to acknowledge "the people in the shop that made all the stuff."
Melissa is incredibly sweet. She introduces herself to everyone who is working with her backstage and thanks them profusely for all their work. Now that is what I call Star Quality!

Agreed. That was very kind and gracious of her, but it did irk me that no one told her to give one final moment of recognition to Seth. He has been with SNL for over twelve years and head writer for, what, ten of those years? He deserved a larger send-off; ala Kristen Wiig's.
Honestly, I was really unimpressed with last night (Weekend Update aside). The game Melissa Mccarthy the same thing to do in every skit, it seemed - which is the same thing she's done in The Heat...and Bridesmaids...and Identity Thief. I'm over that character already. I understand because of her appearance Hollywood limits what she can do, but to have her playing the same character over and over is just ridiculous.
I honestly thought last night was one of the weakest episodes of the season.
I agree. That park bench scene where she was eating BBQ really upset me. What a waste of her talent and diversity.
They had Mc Carthy and totally misused her.
Weak episode. Hopefully after the break it will improve.

McCarthy was hilarious. She should play Peter Pan.

I love Melissa McCarthy. I like Imagine Dragons. My heart still pounds when I remember the time Seth and Stefon kissed. And the Black History Month short was hilarious.

This board tends to get a little tetchy when SNL pokes gentle fun at Broadway tropes, I've noticed.

You said this million times - and I can attest to it because I watch the old seasons on Netflix - that rarely does an episode hit every sketch out of the park. There's no golden age that was totally free of clunkers. Some weeks are better than others and occasionally there's a complete episode that I totally hate, but I enjoy watching this show. I get the phenomenon of hate-watching, but I sometimes wonder if much of the internet might be just a smidge happier if they devoted these ninety minutes a week to something else.

So very true, Phyllis.
People seem to forget that for every classic sketch we hold up as perfection it was more likely than not in an episode with just as many clunkers and forgettable sketches. Everything (music, movies, television, comedy, literature, theatre, etc, etc) looks better in hindsight because you can conveniently leave out all the dreck and just remember the good parts.
The show really hasn't changed much in it's 38 seasons. Sketches always stretch on too long and they really don't know how to end them, never did. Considering they start fresh on Monday with a meeting with the guest host and write, design, build, rehearse the show for Saturday (when the scripts aren't chosen until after read through on Wednesday), it is freaking amazing.

I think they've gotten muuuuuch better at bringing many sketches to conclusions.
Also, Melissa McCarthy hardly seems like a gal who would do sketches she doesn't want to do. Remember how upset so many people got because Vogue put her in a coat on its cover and then it turned out she picked out the coat? That's what some of the concerns in this thread seem like to me.
And, sorry Capn, but this is one of the weirdest, most unintentionally funny sentence in this thread: "What a waste of her talent and diversity."
I should mention that my Saturday night postings in the SNL thread are usually when I've just come home from a night out drinking...

When do you watch the show?
You would not believe the power the quest host has over what sketches are chosen. They have first say in what sketches get cut after dress. They also work with the writers during the process.
The opening sketch and monologue were gold. Weekend Update was great. I think the museum sketch worked better on paper than onscreen. I didn't hate the concept. The execution was too slow for that pay off.

You're just being a Latino Bert about that sketch.
The best of a bad lot was the Delaware News station sketch & update
The opening was lame

And Melissa let slip the brown word in one of the last sketches, right?
