I'm not sure if it is on amazon.com yet. It is on blackstoneaudio.com or something to that effect (i just woke up, so forgive me).
Yea, those reasons make a lot of sense. My thoughts were that he may not have wanted people to buy it just to hear him sing, but to hear the story, but who knows? Though I can't help but crack a smile when I hear him speak the lyrics, it does have a good effect at the same time.
This is a long-shot, I think, but.... when you listen to those lyrics in song, it's on auto-pilot at this point, for a lot of Rent fans. When you read them in print, or even hear them read aloud, straight prose, you really take a second look and focus in on the lyrics, like you may not have done recently, since they're so engrained in your head. Sometimes looking at them a little differently makes them more impactful.
When he Read in Macon he sang some of the lyrics that he put in his book.
I think that's a really good point, Em... though it *was* pretty nice to hear him sing a bit of Glory.
A little Myspace update from Anthony, for those of you who don't use Myspace:
"Hi everybody --
I'm sorry for having been silent for a while now. As you can see from my previous blog post, I've been a leeeeeeeeeetle busy traveling around the country.
To those of you who attended any of the events till this point, THANK YOU. Your support and joy and encouragement and incredible reception mean the world to me.
Here are some newly-scheduled upcoming dates for you to check out, if you're able. I'd love to meet you there.
Just a word about the policy on these events: only books that are purchased on site will be allowed to be autographed. So if you already have a book and you'd like to come to get one signed, give your old one away to a library, or sell it to a used bookstore or something. I don't make the rules, I just have to report them...

Emcee has a good point. I also wonder if speaking the lyrics is a common practice for audio books. I doubt it's a copyright issue for those songs. On the other hand, "Losing My Religion" and the Counting Crows song (I don't have my book with me at the moment) having their lyrics removed from the audio book I believe is a copyright issue.
Even though he didn't sing them, he did speak the lyrics in rhythm to the song.
The cassette format (delivered in 24 hours), the MP3 CD, and the library version of the CD format (the last two delivered within 4-6 weeks) are now available through Amazon.com.
secondstar05: Thanks for the myspace update.

Wahoo! He's coming back to SF!!
What's an MP3 CD? Doesn't having it on CD negate the fact that it's an MP3? And does anyone still buy cassettes anymore?
It's weird that they would allow their lyrics to be used for the book, but not the audio book. From a copyright standpoint, having them spoken isn't any worse than having them written.

An MP3 CD is when all the audio tracks on the CD are converted to mp3 files instead of the standard, uncompressed audio format used for commerical CDs. The avantage to this format is that the entire book can be stored on one CD instead of 8 CDs. However, you would either need a computer or a stereo that can read mp3 files to play it.
My family still buys cassettes every now and then. However, I do agree that the cassette is dying out.

I have a portable CD player that plays MP3 CDs or data discs. Burners tend to call them data discs, and for my CD player to read it... it does have to be in mp3 format.

He does speak them in rhythm, that's true. But some of them do sound funny being spoken, but it does allow you to actually listen to the line more. The second time that I read the book, I made sure that I slowed down during the lyric parts and actually sang them in my head so that I was getting the actual meanings, instead of just reading them blindly because I knew them.
Yea, I figured the other songs were just a copyright issue, but the point of them being written is true...that seems to be just as much copyright as anything else. Eh, I guess we will never know!
How common is it for the person who writes the book to be the one to read it? I figured that isn't very common but that almost defeats the purpose because that person could have different inflections on certain words that weren't meant to be there. But, yea, I'm going off topic.
Thanks for the myspace update! If only he would come back to THIS side of the country again!
I don't think it's very common, but obviously, really, the only way -- if possible -- to record a memoir.
Mañanaaaaa. And hey, we're East Coast. :) I'm not sure if we're his last East Coast stop, though -- UDel is after us, right?
Anthony's speaking at Columbia University. It's not really being publicized outside of the University community, though, because it's for students only. The venue is too tiny for it to be opened up.
Hee, again, don't forget your question.

Silence = Death said: How common is it for the person who writes the book to be the one to read it?
No. It's not very common. In my experience, most of the audio books where the author is also the narrator are self-help books and religion-based books. In these cases, the author is also a public speaker. Edit: Just checked Amazon. Books from the "humor" section are often narrated by the author. A good number of autobiographies are narrated by the author, too.
Most of the time, audio books are narrated by actors (from TV, film, or radio). Even Anthony has narrated another author's work (The Ultimate Rush by Joe Quirk).

Mandi, maybe I should ask it at the Q&A.
You all know what I'm going to say about the new dates, so I'll spare you the whining.

Emcee, UD is on Tuesday night... and I'll be there. This will be Anthony's second appearance at UD in 5/6 years... and that impressive for Delaware.
I have a bunch of friends there; I'm making them all go.

Make them stay home! More Anthony for my friend and I :) It will be strange, when he was promoting his CD 6 years ago, there were maybe 20 people who came to see him in a tiny room. Now, it will be crazy, which is definately awesome, but crazy!
Mandi, maybe I should ask it at the Q&A.
Well, I'm sure he'd like to hear something other than "So what was it like to film the movie?" or "How were Tracie and Rosario?"
