you really couldn't know if people are "ready" or not.

I said MOST of it. Not all of it.
In the last few days I've been attacked about Inapropo more than I have in the entire time its been up, and its starting to really get on my last nerve. Its our discretion who we let in, and usually its not the younger ones due to the occasional adult conversation. I don't see whats so wrong about that, and I also feel frustrated when people talk about what goes on behind our figurative closed doors because, in reality, most of it is quite tame(exception b eing, as I've said, NC-17 fanfiction and fanart)
What's with all the screening? These people are Anthony fans trying to join an LJ community, not a Supreme Court Justice nominee.
But do you really think that most of it being quite tame excuses the stuff that's.... not? I think that's poor defense and hypocrisy, to be perfectly honest.

No, I don't think that it excuses it. I don't see why saying the majority of it is normal but sometimes it isn't. It's each posters choice whether or not they want to friends-lock. If they don't want to share an icon they made except for a couple people who requested it, they friends lock. That is the sole purpose, and we welcome people to post on all of the public entries, so I don't see what the problem is.
Also, you might've missed, I said we accept most people. Which we do. But some people we don't.

Guys, chill. I know we're on the off-topic board, but we could try and talk about Anthony Rapp a bit, couldn't we?

I can't help but get a little angry because lately I've been attacked by several people about how we run Inapropo. I dont think its any different than how some other communities are run, and its getting really frustrating.

Um, if you haven't noticed, Anthony doesn't really get talked about that much in here unless it's a fangirlish shriek about one thing or another that he did.

You know, you make the point about friends-lock using the claim that there are icons you don't want others taking. That's valid, and I understand that. But you skirt the issue by focusing only on these icons you don't want taken. You own up to the slash and the inappropriate (pun not intended) nature of the community only when it's convenient for your weak defense.
You've exactly stated my point yourself. You don't see what the problem is -- and that explains why you didn't even answer my question. I could care less who you accept; I don't even have a LiveJournal account.
I don't understand why it's so seemingly cliquey or there's a screening process beyond an age limit (and I'm not biased, I've never applied or even really been to that community), but I think that some people are overreacting about the content issues. You can't content-control the entire internet... if you don't support the community's intentions, don't join it. That stuff is out there, and you sort of just have to deal with it and ignore it if it isn't your thing. The actors have, I'm sure. You might think that it's creepy, but other people might not. Personally, any sort of real-life fanfiction seriously sketches me out.. but I can't really do anything about it except to avoid it. I don't see what's wrong with the slash content (in general), even if it doesn't happen to be my cup of tea.
It's responsbile to screen a community that deals with NC-17 content for age, but I don't agree with the subjective judgement of who's "mature enough" to join. On the other hand, it's a privatelly run community, and the pwople who run it have the right to do so as they wish.

Yeah, I know, Katt. But I can't help but hope, can I?

I don't feel that I've ever denied that the nature of the community is rather slashy and rated higher than PG-13. I focused mainly on the icons because that is usually what does go on under friends-lock. Its not as covert and inappropriate as people seem to think. Some of it- not all of it.
If you'll agree with me, I'd rather stop this conversation because I've gottten along with you quite well in the past and I'm not in the mood to get angry at anyone.

Anthony Rapp is FAAAANtabulous. Ya think?
...that's all I got.
Um. Oh!
So, what do you hold to be an absolute truth?
The age limit is a piss-poor excuse. I'm older than all of the mods and I wasn't accepted

Well, age is not always why people aren't accepted, I'll admit that. Whats your LJ username, skittles?
I agree with your last point, SS. You need an OBJECTIVE way of screening -- a set, measurable set of criteria. Not who you think is mature enough. Being subjective like that will make people feel badly.
I know I said I didn't care about who you accept, and mostly, I really don't, but I thought that was a good point.
Over-and-above, I don't believe that the simple fact that you disclaim what's in the community and that you haven't denied the slash ultimately makes it excusable or okay or whatever term you feel like using to fit the bill. But obviously, that's a very big difference in opinion. One that I don't think my point will ever appear clear on, because of your deeply-dug beliefs in it.
If you'll agree with me, I'd rather stop this conversation because I've gottten along with you quite well in the past and I'm not in the mood to get angry at anyone.
While I tend to view that as a cop-out, and an excuse for not havning and giving an answer, since it's very obvious that you're not going to answer the questions I pose out of pure curiousity, and since my point is clearly just flying right by you, I guess it's not worth it to continue.

Age is a viable way to scree, seeing as some posts apparently have some NC-17 content, but it shouldn't be the only way.
And that's all I'm going to say on the subject.
P.S. Tacos are great, I love your icon.

So, anybody else adore that wonderful guy... what's his name again? Oh yea... Anthony...?
It's not important, I rarely go on LJ anymore.
tacos are great only uses that icon so we know he meant food and not... something else.
I luff you, Noah.
Weeee! Anthony!

To make you all stop fighting:
"I was sitting on the train today on my way home from school and there was this guy sitting with his little daughter on his lap and she was being somewhat fussy. He tried shushing her and calming her down, but she didn't. So he started singing to her. He started "Finale B". She was still a little fussy but she calmed down and he was just singing it softly to her. It was so... innocent. Like something from a movie. When he got to the "there's only us / there's only this" part I got kinda choked up, something I rarely do."

And see, I think repeatedly twisting my words and then claiming I'm copping out when I'm attempting to gracefully back out of the argument is rude.
We have not been trying to make ANYONE feel bad and we usually encourage people to reapply after we've gotten to know them.
Your initial question was "I'm curious, though -- if there's a need to deem people "ready" for it, doesn't that say something about the material?" and I thought I answered that with my explanation. Perhaps "ready" was not the best wording.
And when we continued said conversation, you said "Funny that you say this, yet you claim the stuff that's locked to be "not that bad." And even while making that claim, you feel it your civil service to deem people "ready" in some protective act."
See, I've repeatedly said in this topic that the MAJORITY of it is icons. Which means that the rest of it is other content, which includes but is not limited to fanfiction/fanart.
I have a feeling this entire tirade was for the sake of argument and to possibly drive me out of the topic. I'm going to leave because I don't want to devote any more time to a topic that has evolved from being about Anthony to an attack on me.
