Well, this is sad

Only in same sex relationships. Duh. Jesus wants senior boys to date freshman girls.

Its what Jesus would've done if he went to high school.

Nevermind. I had no idea laws had been changed. Romeo and Juliet laws would have protected them if they were heterosexual. This is bull$hit.

I don't understand why the age of consent isn't lower than 18 in FL. My mom was preggers with me at the start of her senior year by my dad who was 5 yrs her senior and who married her shortly after she failed the rabbit test. And any military base is still a magnet for area high school chicks on the hubby-hunt, especially ones with few economic resources.

Teens are still having sex and not always with other teens. Not only homophobic, the law seems anti-immigrant as well. Anyone who's ever been to FL's urban centers will not require an explanation.

The age of consent in Florida CAN be as low as 16, provided they are consensually with someone under 23. And there are often "close in age" exemptions made. I'm not sure how the girl's parents have much of a case. It's clearly an act of spite.

Well, this is sad

The state attorney's office has offered Kaitlyn Hunt a plea deal which includes two years' house arrest and a year of probation, which would stay on her adult record and limit her career choices, according to Examiner.

The attorney prosecuting this case should be the one arrested.

I can't believe the minor's parents are putting her thru all this. If their daughter is a lesbian then so be it. If the two young ladies end up together after both are at least 18 this will have all been for naught. There has to be a back story that I'm missing, like perhaps some unsavory aspect of Kaitlyn's character.

Isn't it just as likely that the other girl's parents are the unsavory characters?

Well, this is sad

It doesn't seem like the Romeo and Juliet law in Florida is specific about gender, so this would be no different if this was an 18 year old/15 year old boy/girl relationship. It's crappy, but I don't really see this as discrimination.

Well, this is sad

Being from Florida, I remember a case like this back in the 90's. It was an 18 year old boy whose High School girlfriend was around 16 and the same kind of thing happened. If I remember correctly, he had to register as a sex offender and since the laws obviously didn't change, he still is.

#12

Well, this is sad

Legally, it's not discrimination. It's just absurd. It's an idiotic law that can be easily manipulated by spiteful parents.

According to JoeMyGod, the younger girls parents have known all along and waited to press charges once Kaitlyn (sp?) turned 18. The laws are in their favor, though. Since she's under 23, there's a close age exemption. And the younger girl admits its consensual.

Let's be glad that they don't live in McKinney, TX.

"Isn't it just as likely that the other girl's parents are the unsavory characters?"

Perhaps, but they are STILL the parents and their daughter is their ward. So, Kaitlyn does not get to set the rules for the minor. As a libertarian, I think the law is stupid on several levels because only a few generations back teens were marrying on the regular especially when the life expectancy of a male was 40ish. One of my great-grandmas was married in NC at 14 and with child at 15.

Laws and social mores change but mother nature is still operating under the same guiding principles. I have to question why nature would engineer pre-teens with the ability to procreate.

It reeks of homophobia.

According to JoeMyGod, the younger girls parents have known all along and waited to press charges once Kaitlyn (sp?) turned 18.

Doesn't when the relationship started come in to play here? I seem to recall hearing something like that. I remember a different account where the younger person turned 18 during the relationship and the older person faced charges because the younger was a minor at the beginning. I know it varies state to state but I feel like I heard something like that before.

I hope this whole thing gets thrown out. She doesn't deserve to have to register or have this on her record.

Iran (Iraq?) is debating whether girls s young as 10 should be allowed to wed. Sharia law and whatnot.

I mean, if a 10 year old girl can be in wedded bliss with a 50 year old man, and the first time she bleeds, she dies, (look it up), why can't this woman and 15 year old have a consensual relationship?

@phyllis

What I was alluding to was the prospect that Kaitlyn has introduced the kid to drugs or criminal activity. Sure, it's all speculation on my part but I personally don't know Kaitlyn's history so it's difficult for me to rush to her defense. As I understand it, the kid still lives under the parents roof so she has to either toe the line or runaway.

I'd be curious to learn if FL law could consider it abduction of a minor if the minor ran away with Kaitlyn without the parent's consent. This is a cautionary tale in that kids are not as empowered or autonomous as TV land would lead many to believe, right, wrong, or otherwise. And there are many parents who are not going to abdicate their parental responsibilities to folks organizing web petitions.

I still maintain that the minor does not deserve the attention (and scrutiny) that case has engendered. To me, it's a family matter. In most cases, we don't get to choose our parents so we deal with them until we're in a position to move on.

Well, this is sad

There are dozens of married couples out there where one is a registered sex offender for dating in scenarios like this, then they later married. The fact that the parents may be using homophobia as a reason is pretty much irrelevant. They don't need a reason.

The close proximity of their age doesn't mean she won't face the same charges. It just means the penalty could be less severe. She's being offered two years of house arrest and a year of probation. There have been MUCH harsher sentences for statutory rape. I don' think this should be considered such, but since it is, I don't think she is being treated differently because she's gay.

Well, this is sad

If they had other reasons (drugs or whatnot), what would have been the benefit of the parents waiting till she was 18?

I mean, I don't know her either, but I know enough of the history of gay people in this country (particularly away from New England, where it's not all gay marriage and non-discrimination laws) to not see it as not such huge leap that the parents are motivated by nothing but homophobia. It seems at least as equally valid as speculation that the older troublesome lesbian got the innocent straight girl hooked on drugs.

I doubt it. The plea deal is for house arrest for two years, in other words, until the other girl turns 18 and the parents can't legally keep them apart. I think this is about nothing more than ignorant parents who believe Kaitlyn is "turning their daughter gay".

Well, this is sad

I didn't mean any other criminal reason like drugs or abuse. They don't need a reason beyond not wanting this person with their child. They may just not like her. Technically, what she is doing is illegal, so their reason for reporting her boils down to illegal activity. It's dumb, but a boy in the same situation would be treated the same.

JerseyGirl is right. I don't doubt that the younger girl's parents are motivated by homophobia. But the law itself isn't discriminatory, so the execution of the law isn't discriminatory. It has been used on countless heterosexual situations, as well. The law itself is the problem here, as it breaks something into black and white with no allowance of grey.

Oh, I agree with that. And I think it's the same kind of travesty that befalls heterosexua kids who get caught up in these kinds of situations.

And just to clarify, my comment about drugs was to javero, meaning if there was something else at play here (other than the parents disapproving because it was a same-sex pairing) why would they have waited until the girl was 18?

The law is intended to protect kids but can be used to ruin their lives. It's absurd.
