I'm shocked, aren't you?

I'm not saying someone should bomb the Phelps family because that would be wrong.
Disgusting.
Isn't there some kind of supreme authority in the Baptist church that could condemn this?

They have been laughed out of Boston before. Things never go well for them here.
I'm usually against violence towards other people.......
but these scumbags are testing that theory.
I would honestly feel absolutely no sympathy for them if a semi happened to smash into one of their protests.
I don't think they are members of THAT Baptist church. They are their own entity, I'm sure.
I like for them to get as much exposure as possible. Let everyone see how horrible they are. Everyone who uses the Bible to deny LGBT people equal rights is making the same argument, no matter how politely they phrase it. I think the WBC has done more for mainstream acceptance of LGBT people than just about any activism we've done on our own behalf.
These people literally make me sick. I don't understand how someone can be THAT messed up and think that way. It is disgusting.

Well I guess the police can rest easy now that we know the bombs came from God. And I don't agree that the exposure they get is helping the cause. I wish the press would stop giving them the coverage they so clearly relish. Would they spend the time, energy and money on their crusade if no one was photographing and publishing it?
I honestly think these people are the LGBT's best ally. No one wants to be associated with them or to be seen as buying what they proposing.

With all due respect, no one like *us* is buying their rhetoric, but it empowers their like-minded bigots to lash out as well. No good can come from hate mongering, period (IMHO).
I guess God's been pretty busy, since Massachusettes has had gay marriage since 2004. Nine years later...
What filth.
Wilmingtom, who is this *us* of which you speak?
We do not see Westboro Baptist Church growing into a mega church. We see an inbred family spouting hate. We see motorcycle gangs, various groups and whole communities come out in protest against their messages of hate.
Whatever happened with those White House petitions to have them declared a hate group & lose their tax-exempt status? Can we move along with that now?

Snafu, I was referring to your comment that "...No one wants to be associated with them or to be seen as buying what they proposing." I agree that the posters here are not buying it (the *us* of my post) but there are others who do buy it and it's dangerous.
I have honestly never met a soul who doesn't detest the Westboro crew and all they stand for. I have friends who are very devout Southern Baptist ministers and they simply say that the Westboro people are NOT Christians. They are just hateful. They have no allies. They have very very few new members. Their numbers are dwindling. That's why they have so many kids. They have to raise members, expecting at least half of those kids to wise up and leave.
I've only seen 1 group similar to the Westboro hate group. I refuse to call them a church. It's a group from Philadelphia in Pennsylvania called Repent America. All I've seen them do is go to college campuses and get chased off. They came to mine twice. Not sure if they only stick to PA or what. But, they were another really small group.
Honestly guys, Westboro has jumped the shark. Anytime something tragic happens of note you can count on them saying they are going to protest.
But guess what? They rarely do. If they aren't sure they're going to get news coverage then they don't show up. So, at this point they pretty much just announce their plans and bask in the millisecond of outrage they cause anyone who still listens or cares what they do.
They're an small inbred family whose members are defecting and whose strategy of shock value has grown tiresomely predictable.
They released a press statement claiming they were going to picket the funeral of three of my brother's best friends who died in a horrible carbon monoxide leak. (Five deaths total) They died at a weekend outdoor camping event that was raising money for a camp for terminally ill children. The press release called them "bikers burning in hell." They claimed they were doing it because they were the Freedom Rider Bikers who protested Westboro protesting. They weren't. They were members of my dad's motorcycle organization and in order to be a member, they can't be a member of any MC. It's a non-profit and has the SOLE purpose of raising money for children. They fund the camp, a sports league for disabled children, give big donations to St. Jude, fund terminal kids' wishes, and help local families in need. Sound like a bunch of demons, right? So, first, they were completely wrong about who they were "protesting."
Of course, my home town had HUNDREDS of people show up, lining the streets, holding up signs of support, planning on blocking the Westboro folks. They didn't even show up.
I'm all for freedom of religion, but the goverment should really have some sort of way of regulating this small congregations. Their beleievers are clearly blind and would do anything their leaders say and without the censorship of a governing central church the leaders could basically get away with anything.

I think the only way they'll ever go away is if the media completely ignores the incendiary stunts that bring them attention.

I have to respectfully disagree. As much as I despise their beliefs, this is not an area for government intervention. As far as I know, other than picketing, for which I assume they follow regulations regarding permits when needed, they don't actually do much. People have a right to their beliefs and opinions, as long as their actions and not their words, do not cause harm to others. Again, I despise them, but I don't think they're any more harmful that many of the folks on cable news.
A while back I directed a production of THE LARAMIE PROJECT at the university where I teach. Of course, WBC got wind of it and planned a protest in front of the school. Our security was prepared for them and guess what? They never showed up.
I'm so tired of them.

They never showed up to ours, either. We were almost disappointed not to get the attention.
