re: What Was The First Celebrity Death That Affected You?

For me it was Heather O'Rourke, the little girl from Poltergeist. I was the same age as her(12) and also I had been very sick too. This completely freaked me out. It was the first time I faced the real idea of death. I still have all the articles about her that I saved when she died. It still makes me very sad.

I wasn't alive when he died, but I remember being pretty upset when I found that Ray Bolger was dead.

I was also pretty sad when Jerry Orbach died as well.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

The one I can think of clearly, is Aaliyah. I was walking through the lounge at college and the news was on and I heard " . . . died earlier today in a plane crash" and for some reason the first person I thought of that it could be was Oprah. Then, they showed Aaliyah's picture, and I just had to sit down. I felt like crying but I was too shocked. I was/am a HUGE fan of hers and boy did it effect me.

Strangely, I can remember standing in the kitchen of my godmother's inn and hearing on the radio that Elvis had died. I think I was only 6 or 7 at the time, but I could tell that this was the death of someone important.

The other that stood out for me, was River Phoenix. Maybe it was just that it was so unexpected, and he was about my age, but with his death I felt that we had lost someone with so much potential, and we'd be missing out on some great performances.

Gower Champion.

This was well before the days of personal computers. I's set my clock radio to an all news station to hear the reviews for FORTY SECOND STREET and heard that he's died only hours before the show opened. This was the man who directed and choreographed HELLO, DOLLY,! CARNIVAL!, BYE BYE BIRDIE and IDO! I DO!--shows that I more than just enjoyed. I walked through the rest of the summer in a daze.

Jim Henson's death affected me terribly. It was the first person that I didn't personally know that I cried over. Jim Henson was my childhood, from Sesame Street, through the Muppet Show and movies, I can't remember loving anything more than the Muppets. I was also very upset by Charles Schultz's death. I felt the same way about Peanuts as I did the Muppets. And finally Al Hirschfeld's death really bummed me out. He may be the start of my fascination with theater. Seeing his drawings every week was a highlight, and I wanted to know what was behind those pieces of art. All great artists that informed my life.

Absolutely Madeline Kahn. I'll never forget it. My father walked in after work and told me he'd heard it on the radio, and I just went numb. I was numb all evening and kept sobbing every time I had to speak. I still miss her.

I was also very upset to learn David Rappaport had killed himself. I became a fan of his after his death and when I looked him up, I found out he had committed suicide. Jeff Mylett from Godspell, as well. Those saddened me but not nearly as much as Madeline.

God, that morning finding out about Lennon's death was just the worst.

Cobain's death completely bummed me out, because the "official word" was that he had cleaned up and so the future looked bright. But it was a lie.

One death that really was surreal was the death of Rock Hudson. I didn't LOVE his work the way I loved Lennon and Cobain's, but there was this short period of time between the announcement that he had AIDS and his death and it was just so bizarre. I had been active on the front lines in the epidemic trying to get the mainstream to give a **** about it and suddenly, there it was, all eyes on Hudson.

For some reason I was COMPLETELY unaffected by Freddie Mercury's AIDS death. I think because he was from a much younger generation than Hudson and had been so cowardly about his sexuality.

"so cowardly about his sexuality."

Namo - that's kind of a bizzare thing to read, and yet I get where you're coming from. We seem to float in that 'in-between' generation of being completely hidden and then being available to openness.

Here's the deal, sophomore year in high school I had three music pics in my locker. Freddie Mercury, Sid Vicious and David Bowie in his Ziggy Period.

I took a LOT of **** for the Freddie pic but not the Bowie. Lot of "he's GAY" and since I had read DOZENS of interviews with Freddie and he'd insisted that he wasn't while giving evasive answers like, "I'll lose half my audience if I say I am and the other half my audience if I say I'm not," I was put in that awkward, closeted teen position of saying "He is NOT" because that's what he said. I recognize that it was all about not being seen for my own true identity, but when he came out as gay and that he had AIDS a few days before he died I remembered feeling rage for the fact that I had done all that "He is NOT" just a few years before when "Yeah, so?" would have been such a better answer. Sure, I know it's fairly obvious from this vantage point today, I mean, his band was Queen for f's sake. But still.

I also have never forgiven or forgotten an interview Trent Reznor gave once where he said he didn't feel a think when John Lennon was murdered but that Freddie Mercury's death really got to him.

Natalie Wood. I was 13. She was and still remains my favorite actress. I cried. I haven't watched anything with Christopher Walken since then not even Brainstorm. I'm breaking that by going to see Hairspray when it opens.

Though I did not become fans (or even hear of them in the first place) until after they had passed on, the fact that Frank Zappa NOR Bill Hicks are still around is pretty sad.

I'm sure Zappa would have over 1,000 albums by now and oh the things Hicks could have said about the current political climate...
