Maybe it's because I'm “a woman of a certain age” with many friends at least a decade older than I am, or because my mother is just so hip, cool and young in spirit that I have never thought of her as elderly, so my view of these things may be skewed, but I am always shocked to hear or read about something involving an "elderly" person, only to find out that it’s someone in their 60s or 70s. I’m not exactly sure if there is a particular chronological age group for which I’d use this descriptor, but I’m curious to know what others think.

I myself might be what is considered chronologically elderly but there's no way that I am!
The word elderly brings to mind a person who appears to be old due to natural aging, but with something physical which hinders them from moving around well.

I would say 75 and older, but it depends on the situation. Like I have seen some older people who have a lot more energy than younger people. Like a few years ago, they invited former Queen of the Fair winners at my local fair back. The woman who was crowned first from the 1935 fair came. She drove up to New Jersey from Florida all by herself and looked to be in better condition than some of the ones after her did.

Posted: 9/18/13 at 10:18pmJust began a new job recently at a skilled nursing facility. My oldest client is 107 and the average age is somewhere in the 90's. I would definitely say 90's+ is "old" but really it comes down to state of mind.

When you're as old as --
Is anyone as old as I?--
What difference does it make?

Here is a secret I never have told
Maybe you'll understand why
I believe if I refuse to grow old
I can stay young till I die...
