Just finished Water for Elephants and started The Book Thief which is amazing.
I have Maverick: Legend of the West by Ed Robertson coming through inter-library loan.
I quit reading Dunces, Corrections and Middlesex for various reasons. Middlesex was close to what I enjoy, but that incest part went on way too long. I hear they are fantastic books though.. Melodrama is what I crave.
I'm almost through "Dead at Dark" and it's ok, I can see how it could make a good television series.

Just finished: Marie Antoinette: The Journey
Currently reading: The Golden Compass
Next on the list: Abundance, A Novel of Marie Antoinette
Just finished "The Time Traveler's Wife"... it was pretty good. I really enjoyed it. Before that I read the book about the musical Follies.
My friend just lent me Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close to read on the plane tomorrow. I can't wait...I've heard great things about it.

I am reading for my comps. Its not even remotely fun or interesting. Right now I'm reading C.P. Snow's The Two Cultures. 100 equally thrilling books and journal articles follow.
For fun, though, I am reading The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon.
I used to be an avid reader, but my "pleasure reading" ended when I went to college. I didn't allow myself to read for fun when I had so many damn textbooks that I was supposed to get through. Now that I've graduated I want to get reading again.
In honor of the 4th of July I'm currently reading 1776 by David McCollogh.

This was the BEST library cycle I've had in a long time!
Over the past few weeks I've read:
"The Poisonwood Bible" by Barbara Kingsolver - it was incredible.
"Shopaholic and Baby" by Sophia Kinsella - I like her books, they make me laugh out loud!
"What the Dead Know" by Laura Lipman - kept me on the edge of my seat.
"The Queen's Fool" by Phillipa Gregory - entertaining and rich historical fiction taught me about a time period I never cared about.
I just started Middlesex, which I am enjoying so far. I also am reading Paws and Reflect: Exploring the Bond Between Gay Men And Their Dogs. The stories are short, so I can pick it up and put it down at will. I, of course, am biding my team until Deathly Hallows. I recently finished my repeat journey through the first six.
DayDreamer, I am looking forward to Michael Tolliver Lives, but it has been years since I read Tales of the City et al. Do you recommend re-reading them before picking it up?
I second yodamarie's endorsement of Under the Banner of Heaven. I read it when I was preparing to play Joe Pitt in "Angels in America." It is a disturbing, yet fascinating read.
I'm alternating between 3 novels - The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards, Corelli's Mondolin by Louis DeBernieres (for the second time), and, for comic relief and levity, Babyproof by Emily Giffin.
DBilly - I last visited with the folks at Barbary Lane in the early 90s, and I tell you, the book just draws you back in. It stands alone very well, though I'm now contemplating re-reading the books.
Hmmm ... I think I may re-read them. I am so glad that I re-read the six Harry Potter books in anticipation of Deathly Hallows that re-reading all about the denizens of Barbary Lane seems to make sense!
I didn't realize there were pictures in that RobbO.

"Lost in a Good Book" by Jasper Fforde.
It's wonderful. Very bright and interesting. I previously had read his Eyre Affair and fell in love with his heroine, Thursday Next.

Re-reading 'The Case For Hillary Clinton', Susan Estrich (Reagan Books/Harper Collins)
The End of Faith- Sam Harris
Series of Unfortunate Events (Book Eight)
Mrs. Dalloway- Virginia Woolf
365 Plays/365 Days- Suzan-Lori Parks
All are fantastic.
I also just finished Trash by Dorothy Allison and Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters. I can't recommend them enough. Both are amazing.
I still haven't decided which out of the four that I bought that I want to read first. Hmmmmm . . . **scratches chin**

The Murder of Princess Diana by Noel Botham...
What a dirty, rotten, stinking affair this was/is. New things coming to light all the time.

Just finished "From The Corner Of His Eye" by Dean Koontz. Good book. Ended a little abruptly (when books take the last 50 pages and wrap everything up all nice, it's predictable, and this one does this better than most, but still does it.) Overall - engaging, spookish read. Recommended if you like suspense novels. The main sociopath is downright scary.
taz, are you here? What was your thought/question on this book?
SPOILER-ISH
I wonder if the concept is what is going on in LOST.
I also wonder if some of the characters were the same people (as other characters in the book) but in different places.
END SPOILER-ISH
