And how many Orthodox Jewish farmers would be listening to the radio on Shabbos?

Do kibbutz residents count? :P
Man, what an awful joke. Love it.

I think it was Michael Feldman who mentioned this. Guess he isn't very observant.
Umm...I'm not Jewish so I won't partake in this at the risk of being flamed, but can I just say that my Jewish ex-bf really turned me onto matzoh ball soup, and I've grown to really enjoy Jewish cuisine? And recommendations for making it? (Matzoh ball soup) Since we broke up, I have no access to the ingredients, and even if I did, I wouldn't know how to make it from scratch and I've had this craving like a mofo.

There's no Jewish specialty stores where you live? Hmm. I'm sure you can order pre-made matzoh balls from somewhere online. You don't have to make them by hand- even my mom doesn't do that except for holidays.
D'you like gefilte fish, by any chance? Now that's something wonderful you don't really want to make by hand, because it makes the whole house smell of fish.

Pre-made matzoh balls?!? For real? Oh man...my ex's grandmother made it by scratch. Although he said something about a powder you could put in water and, as he put it, let it simmer, and "bloop - matzoh ball!".
I LOVE gefilte fish! I can even pronounce it properly now! I had it at the ex's house, although it was quite pungent. I also had...knish something? I don't know the exact words or spelling. I think it had potato in it.

chicken Soup.........One large chicken a hen if you can get it cut up. In a large pot place several carrots, onions, parsnips, celery , dill and parsely. Cover with water ans season with salt and pepper to taste. Simmer on low flame for about 2 hours. Skim foam from top. REmove chicken and veggies. Chill soup to allow fat to come to the top. Remove fat. Simmer soup with diced celery carrot and onion. Matzo balls..........Buy a package of matzo meal and follow directions on back. Do not squeeze or over handle matzo balls as they will become rubbery and sink. They should float.
I'll have to find the Jewish grocery stores. I'm sure they exist because there's a fairly large Jewish population in my suburb of Vancouver, but about 70% of the people here (including myself) are Chinese, so the shops reflect that accordingly.

Uh...I think knish-something could be a few things. But hey, it sounds good. :P
Tiff, get your arse back over to the truth or dare thread. Yes, you! High-tail it over there, girl! Tout suite!

You should be able to find matzo meal in the kosher section of any grocery store. It is made by Streit's or Manishevitz. The other ingredients in matzo balls include eggs oil, salt and pepper and chicken stock. I like to add chopped parsely and a pinch of ground ginger to mine. In Yiddish, matzo balls are called KNAIDLACH.

Yup, that's what they're called in my family. Mmm...kneidelach.

Oh gosh I love it with chicken broth. And celery and onions. Can you tell I'm a slight Judaiphile?

No, you pronounce the 'k.' So it's k-neigh-de-lach. "Ch" being that Hebrew sound there's no real equivalent for in English- you know what I mean?
Oh, and Tiff- my friends and I specialized in turning our best Gentile buddies into honorary Jews.

Is it sort of throaty "ch"? Like you're pronouncing "k" without closing your throat?

Yeah, like the beginning of "Chanukah," if you're pronouncing it the Hebrew way.
Damn, I wish I had my old linguistics book- the phonetics section had a good description of it.
