Hey... I'm an Orhtodox Jew from Calgary, Alberta, Canada...so i guess I'm Chassid-HICK. yeah...no?...Is this thing on?
Akiva
Well with a name like Akiva....
Just teasing ya. I actually like that name a lot.
oooh. i haven't had kishka in years. good stuff.
Must say....I'm partial to kishka. Not really my thing.

I think I've had it once or twice. I don't really remember if I liked it.

Good kishka is hard to find nowadays. I have had some fairly decent kishka at the Second Avenue Deli, but it is not like I remember as a child. As for knishes, I happen to like the Knish Nosh on Queens Blvd. My Aunt and Uncle lived across the street for many years and they always took us there. I had an aunt who live in NJ who used to make knishes in every flavor imaginable. They were fabulous. Ok, on to the next Jewish comfort food........LOKSHEN KUGEL! My mother makes the very best and so did her mother. She loads it with raisins. In case you didn't know, lokshen kugel is noodle pooding.

Rose, please remember that this thread started when you objected to the joke I heard on the radio!
don't forget rugulach... no idea how to spell it. not my fav, but it's ok. but, i always just miss good ny bagels... mmmm... cinnamon raisen. good stuff. the only bagels i can get here are the nasty kind that come 6 to a bag and taste like cardboard. i like real ones... especially when they're not all the exact same shape cause they're handformed. i'm really jealous of everyone in ny right now. i want a good bagel.

I love rugelach.
But cinammon raisin bagels? Bleh. The only real bagels are plain, poppy seed, or sesame seed. And the handmade ones are indeed the best. The ones from the freezer sections of grocery stores are wimpy- too sweet and soft, with hardly anything resembling a true crust. I miss real bagels.
hey, cinnamon raisin were always my fav. although, bacon and egg are good too, but you can't get them at the kosher bagel places obviously. lol. i like plain too and sesame seed. plain egg ones are good, but i'm still a fan of cinammon raisin.

The only good bagels come from New York. The only allowable types are: plain, onion. sesame, poppy, everything, garlic pumpernickel and egg. Raisins, cinnamon, blueberries, chocolate chips, cranberries, etc simply do not belong in or on a bagel. Enough said.
i agree with everything but the cinnamon raisin statement. i still think they're good. but blueberry and the rest, not real bagels

How could one put lox, whitefish or herring on a sweet bagel!
ok, for eating plain cinnamon raisin's are good. personally, i don't like lox... or whitefish... or herring. actually, i just don't like fish. creamcheese and a bagel. that's all i need to make me happy.
Bagels, baked sweets, latkes and deli are good. The rest of Jewish cuisine gets a pass from me.
I love rugelach and chocolate bobka!!!
Has anyone ever had ptcha? I haven't and certainly never want to, but my mom said it is good.
okay, now on to Hamentashen.... what is your favorite kind? I am partial to poppy seed, apricot, and chocolate chip.

Apricot, definitely. While I love poppy seed bagels, I don't particularly like poppy hamentaschen.

I just did some serious thinking about this thread. It started with a joke that some people didn't like and ended up with a lengthy dicussion on Jewish cuisine. I say a not so good situation evolved into a good one. While Judaism is a religion, it is also a culture. To Jews, food is also something spiritual. We even have certain prayers that we say over particular foods such as wine, bread, fruit, etc. When I say these prayers I have a sense of who I am, what G-d expects of me and an automatic link to my ancestors. I take great pride in knowing that when I say say a blessing over wine, I say the same one that generations before me said. Also, when I prepare a recipe that my mother makes, that her mother made and my greatgrandmother made, I feel a strong sense of connection to these people who are long gone. I don't think that other religions can say this. When was the last time you heard someone say, " I have a craving for some good Episcopalian." Jewish cooking is the true soul food. Blintzes anyone?
Yenta, those were lovely words. Thank you. :)
I find it beautiful that we all know what we're talking about, even though we all come from all over the world..There's something universal, all encompassing - That's what's so great about Judaism for me.
But..I can't believe you all don't like cinnamon raisin bagels!! They're like...my absolute favorite thing in the world!! Hmmmm. I also LOVE kugel- haven't had it in soooooo long, though- another thing I eat mostly in the states and not here. Interesting.
