OKhere is mine, it wasn't as much awkward for me as it was for the other person
Last year when I was pretty much blind I had to wear big really dark glasses because light REALLY hurt my eye and we were at another school in the area for state choir contest. Each choir gets a student of the school to show them around and ours was a senior at the school. As he was taking us to our room I washolding onto a friends arm and as we passed him he was just like "Hey nice glasses" (in a sarcastic tone) and then about a second later he realized that I couldn't see and I justheard him say 'Oh f*ck." And according to my friend he couldn't look at me the rest of the night. That was awkward.
Another one was when I was using a cane inDC and I was with a friend going to a monument (I wasn't as blind, but needed the cane at night becasue I couldnt see oretty much anything when it was dark) and I ran into someone because I was just learning howto use the cane and my friend was sucking at helping me out and they guy screamed at me "what are you blind?" And I just said"well actually sir I am." Awkwardness.
For me, it is daily when I trip on things or forget people's names/

Posted: 6/11/06 at 3:38pmOne time I was at the dentist, and usually when I go to the dentist I just expect to get my teeth cleaned and examined and then leave. Well, this day I was wearing a cross necklace (that my mom had given me as a gift) and I apparently the woman who was cleaning my teeth was the Christ child. She asked me several questions about why I was wearing a cross, if I believed in God, if I knew why I should believe in God, etc. The whole time all I wanted to do was leave...it was so ridiculously awkward. Then when I finally did get to leave, she said something to the effect of "Next time someone asks you why you are wearing a cross necklace, you better know what to say. And if you don't know what to say, you shouldn't wear one at all."

I'd have immediately asked to speak to her supervisor and would have filed a complaint.

OK, mine happened to a friend but I was there, and was part of it.
I was at a coffee house (we used to call them that) with two other girlfriends. The place is small, tables close together, and quiet Vivaldi music is playing in the background. In fact, the place was called Cafe Vivaldi.
My friends and I were having some pretty funny conversations, and at one point we were really laughing hard. Hard enough for tears to come. But we had to keep it kind of quiet because of the ambiance in the place. So you know how things are a lot funnier if y ou know you can't laugh out loud? so one of my friends laughed so hard that a HUGE LOUD FART exploded. Then we were all laughing so hard, she fell off her chair.
Every single person in the place was staring at us.
We couldn't stop laughing, and I'm laughing now just remembering it. I'm in tears!

I embrace my inner social awkwardness. Otherwise I would live in a hole. I especially look stupid in those quick passing hellos.
"Hi"
"Hello"
"How are you?" (both of us say it at the same time)
Walk away from each other without saying anything else as we pause just long enough to make things completely awkward.
Is anyone else familiar with the comediam Brian Regan? The man touches on at least one awkward moment each of us has experienced at some point in our lives.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 12:43amI am so awkward socially it's not even funny. Luckily, I haven't embarrassed myself THAT badly - it's mostly minor offenses. My parents have embarrassed me in front of several celebrities, though. Upon meeting Dan Aykroyd (who took me backstage at Little Me to meet Martin Short), my father asked him, "Does the word Bass-O-Matic mean anything to you?" He racked up another one when we met Russ Tamblyn and George Chakiris at a sci-fi con (they were sitting next to each other): "Hey, you guys gonna have a knife fight later?" My mother's contribution was asking John Lithgow if he knew the Muffin Man.

Jane I have a story that was similar.
I'd worked parking out in the hot sun all day for the Brickyard 400, and I had immediately gone out to lunch and eaten quesadillas afterwards. Bad idea. I took a nap and then headed to a friend's house for her birthday party. The pressure build up was intense but I wasn't about to let a fart out because I had some audible farts at inopportune times in the past that they still teased me about.
Well the girls all decide to play twister, and want my cousin Gabe and I to join. We both pass. I pass of course as I am afraid it will cause me to rip one. They get done playing and then insist Gabe and I play at least one round. He gave in so I had little choice without looking crazy. So we played and somehow we got into a position where my head kept accidently hitting him in the butt. All the while it is taking every ounce of my strength to hold the fart in.
After it happened for the third time I couldn't hold my laughter or the gas in anymore. I ripped a huge one as I fell to the ground. All the gas hadn't escaped in the first round so as I lay there laughing hysterically a second one comes out. The girls swear my butt lifted off the ground from the force of it. About a half hour of nonstop laughing ensued and one of my other cousins even peed her pants she was laughing so hard. Then phone calls were made to other friends who weren't there to describe what had happened.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 1:01amWhy does farting make us laugh so much? I admit that a fart makes me hysterical. I also laugh very loud when someone blows their nose loudly. I love that sound!

Posted: 1/24/08 at 1:12amOne time I was walking by a pizza joint and saw what looked like my friend from behind, sitting in a booth with some guy. I decided to sneak up behind her and surprise her with a hug. The girl was surprised, all right.

Jane it could be connected as the more you are willing to laugh with someone you tend to have a closer relationship with them. Same could be said for farting. You tend to fart more around people with which you are comfortable.
Or it could be that farts are often suprising, and methane gas isn't all that pleasant. It could be a reaction developed to help the cohesiveness of a community which would otherwise avoid something that smelled terrible and/or was suprising helping to inhibit the fight or flight response.
Leave it to me to take the humor out of farting.

7th grade. my junior high was a mix of kids from the east side and the west side so we were all kinda getting to know one another. one day after gym class a bunch of us were trading stories about run-ins with the law and one kid mentioned that he hadn't realized until he rode in the back of a police car that the back doors don't open from the inside.
not knowing the kid and being a smartass, i asked, "you were in the back of a police car? what'd ya do, kill somebody?"
the room went deathly quiet as he looked at me and said, "uh, yeah, actually i did. last summer i accidently shot my best friend charlie in the face with my dad's .357 magnum and killed him."
i waited for him to break into a smile and say he was just kidding. he didn't.

Most awful social gaffe, from when I was 17...
I was a youth volunteer at a HUGE children's choral festival. For ease of identification, children from the same school all wore the same T-shirts. I was in the rehearsal area, helping everyone get to their correct spots, and was trying to direct hundreds of kids in an easy way. So I'd shout out things like, "Okay, green kids, section A on the right; blue kids, you're in sections E through G; purple people, you've got the front two rows here by me..." I was trying to do this quickly and wasn't really thinking, and the next group of kids to be directed were all wearing matching white polo shirts. So I shout out, "Okay, white kids, you're in section J..." and in front of the group stand a black boy in his little white polo shirt, with this hurt look in his eyes... I wanted to crawl into a hole and die.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 1:37pmI feel like such a perv for putting this out there but my dental hygienist is a HOTTIE. Whenever I'm reclined in that darned chair and she starts positioning my face during a routine cleaning I always have to fight off getting a "boner". It's something about her voice when she says "now tilt your head a lil' more towards me" while gently handling my chin.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 1:39pmThis happened a long time ago. Okay. I'm a clumsy person as it is, so imagine me on ice skates. So I'm clinging to the side of the rink and trying not to fall. But then there was this like eight year old kid infront of me. So I decided to venture out and skate around him. But I started freaking out and clutched onto the kid, who said something to the effect of, "Um...hi?" To make it worse, once I got past him, I slipped and my glasses fell into the penalty box.

Posted: 1/24/08 at 2:40pmMy one and only time snowboarding, I was going down the bunny hill. I had a skill of being able to speed up very quickly, without knowing how to stop. So I'm going down, everything looks clear, when a little Chinese boy comes skiing right in my path. I tried to stop, failed, and ended up literally running the boy over. This resulted in his father coming over and screaming at me in Chinese, at which point I started crying and apologizing, though they couldn't understand me. Needless to say, I now stay away from winter sports.

while shopping:
boyfriend: 'hey, you should try this skirt on'
me: 'ew. why don't i just go ahead and buy some ugly little pink flats with bows on them to go with it."
and then, a girl wearing PINK FLATS WITH BOWS ON THEM walks past me, giving me an evil look, and takes the skirt off the rack and walks away.
