What movies have rendered you speechless?

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:20pmordinary people was a big one for me. i've only allowed myself to see it once, because it was very upsetting. so was sophie's choice. "people" was hard because i understood conrad too well. "sophie" was hard because it's so bloody tragic! there are a lot of movies you guys are listing that i haven't seen yet, so thanks for the viewing list. i've been wanting to see "they shoot horses" but haven't yet. perhaps tonight is the night!

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:29pmmef - I had very high expectations for the movie, but overall thought it was a terrible movie. I didn't enjoy it at all, and I wouldn't recommend it, but after the movie I was kind of speechless when I was reflecting on what I had just seen and how sincerely messed up life over there is.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:34pmWhy it won the Golden Globe for best foreign film is completely beyond me...unless they were just trying to make a statement about the middle east...

The Ice Storm--one of my all-time favorite movies. The end is just heartbreaking
In The Bedroom--which I will never watch again. One viewing was plenty for me. That put me through an emotional wringer...
Harold and Maude--sad but uplifting at the same time
And Beaverhausen: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre literally made you sick? Why? (I ask because I've never seen it)

Thanks, Margo! I remembered the quote (which I have used FREQUENTLY ever since I saw it) but I couldn't remember the person who said it - it's been awhile. I picked the one off of imdb I thought it was, but obviously I need to get it and see it again

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:38pmYeah, I totally didn't get the Golden Globe win, especially over a masterpiece of cinema like "The Barbarian Invasions".

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:42pmAh...I can see how that would do it.

And I can't believe that broadway86 listed TALK TO HER as one of her picks....not to diss her, but we hardly ever agree on movies. Still, I thought that was weird choice - I absolutely HATED it, which is strange because I love the director. I must also add:
Bad Education
The Dreamers
Schindler's List
Gangs of New York
Monster
Mystic River
Gia
Cabaret
The Rules of Attraction (I know, weird)
Frida
American Beauty
Finding Nemo (yes...)
Angels in America
Girl with a Pearl Earring

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:47pmIt's very much like my life and my friends in HS, so it hit home on a few levels. I could really associate with it. Why did you hate it?

I didn't think it was well written or well acted. Maybe I've been out of high school/college too long to appreciate it.
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned "Boys Don't Cry" yet.

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:55pmIt's funny, it's next on my Netflix list. I just finished "The Motorcycle Diaries" and am about to watch "The Notebook." I can't wait to see it. (Boys Don't Cry, not The Notebook.)

Posted: 2/22/05 at 7:58pmThe only movie that has literally rendered me speechless was "Schindler's List". When I saw it, at the end, the theater was completely silent. No one got up until after the lights had come up and the credits finished rolling. My partner and I didn't speak until halfway home. (and if you know me, that's quite a task)

Boys Don't Cry didn't leave me speechless, it left me breathless.
Another for my list is Dead Man Walking. When I finally did speak it was more of a moan.

BUMP!
Whenever I watch the DVD of the filmed performance of "Passion", I always end up in tears.

munkustrap -
I'm a dude. I have La Lohan on my avatar because... I think I'm in love... heehee Anyways, I thought "Talk to Her" was a very emotional, tragic story. And Almodovar's direction was the epitome of graceful.
Some that I completely forgot:
In the Bedroom
American Beauty (I CAN'T believe I forgot that one!!!)
Angels in America (Prior's final monologue never fails to fill my eyes with h20)
The Barbarian Invasions
I'll come up with more before tomorrow.
