re: What one line from a movie rips right through you?

From American Beauty, when *SPOILER* Ricky is leaving home:

Ricky Fitts: Mom, I'm leaving.
Barbara Fitts: Okay. Wear a raincoat.

It's such a simple line, but it just encapsulates the mother's whole helplessness. I think Allison Janney was the most emotionally affecting actor in that entire movie.

And, of course, from Forrest Gump:

Forrest: He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him.

Oh god, I'm tearing up right now. I'm done!

Madbrian-
I was totally going to say that!

Another one that just about kills me, from Mommie Dearest:

Christina Crawford: Yes, Mommie Dearest.
Joan Crawford: When I told you to call me that, I wanted you to mean it.

Followed closely by:
Joan Crawford: Why can't you give me the respect that I'm entitled to? Why can't you treat me like I would be treated by any stranger on the street?

Two very intense, scary moments that make me go...."Dayum"

I can't post most of it on a family-friendly site, but the exchange between Clive Owen and (the terribly miscast) Julia Roberts as they discuss someone's infidelity in "Closer". Or, after Jude Law tells Natalie Portman that he loves her and she replies, "Where?"

That movie breaks me.
Call the understudy / I can't go on tonight / I'm drinking with my buddy / I'm getting good and tight / Before they raise the curtain I'll be higher than a kite / So call the understudy I can't go on tonight

I agree with "I help young girls out." That always gets me. You don't want to see Vera suffer no matter what she did.

Also in Immortal Beloved: "The comedy is over."
"But I can tell you that Raoul, who was so handsome in "The Phantom," is now a drunken wreck."

Ashley0139- I'm fairly certain its from My Girl *SPOILER* after Thomas dies and all Vada can think about is that he was never able to get his glasses back. That movie still gets to me.

You can love or hate the movie all you want, but most of Shani Wallis' line readings as Nancy in OLIVER still sting (I saw it as a child). Especially--

"From this day on, he's a liar. And a thief. And all that's bad...Ain't that enough for you, without beatin' him to death?"

"I'll put the finger on all of you, and I DON'T CARE IF I HANG FOR IT!"

"Some livin', Lord help me. SOME LIVIN'!!!!!"
I ask in all honesty/What would life be?/Without a song and a dance, what are we?/So I say "Thank you for the music/For giving it to me."

I can never remember exact lines from movies but when I was younger there was only one movie that could choke me up. It was the execution scene at the end of The Green Mile that always got to me.

For that matter, Top Gun also hit me pretty badly, especially after Goose dies and Maverick breaks down in the locker room.

You think this woman is impressed by all this gratuitous bravado? Are you? Are you impressed? In THE HOURS, when Laura Brown is reading MRS. DALLOWAY, with Virginia Woolf narrating the manuscript, and they both simultaneously come to the conclusion of suicide.

"Did it matter, then, she asked herself, walking toward Bond Street, did it matter that she must inevitably cease, completely? All this must go on without her. Did she resent it? Or did it not become consoling to believe that death ended absolutely? It is possible to die. It is possible... to die."
