I'm no Ariana Grande fan, but criticism from Bette Midler, the woman who used to ride around stage in a wheelchair dressed as a mermaid? Wazz-up Bette?

"It's always surprising to see someone like Ariana Grande with that silly high voice, a very wholesome voice, slithering around on a couch looking so ridiculous. I mean, it's silly beyond belief and I don't know who's telling her to do it."

It just seems odd coming from Bette "Otto Titsling" Midler. I would think if anyone would cheer the outrageous it would be Midler.

If you read the whole article, you see that her point is not "don't be silly onstage." It's don't sell yourself cheap as a sexual object in lieu of making use of your talent.

"Apparently people really like to pretend they're having sex . . . They really like to slap each other's butts . . . I don't know what the end game is going to be. I don't know where you go from all that sex in your 20s. I don't know how you sustain it . . . Trust your talent. You don't have to make a whore out of yourself to get ahead. You really don't."

She had a joke during her Vegas show about Britney/Christina/Gaga's going on about how they dress too sexy, etc. Then she ends it with "and IIIIII paved the way for trashy singers with big tits and don't you forget it!"

I'm not saying either is right or wrong. But I think they're very different.

What Reg said - it was camp and comedy - ala Sophie Tucker and as Reg said, Maw West - which I can distinguish from some of the other overtly sexual stuff we see today. But that is just me.

When I saw her show in Las Vegas I think she had a joke about performers with their butts hanging out. Then behind her on a big projection was a picture of a record album with her skirt up and ass out. I have been looking for that picture to post as a reply but cannot find it.

My father is 72 and when the Las Vegas concert was on tv New Years Eve (a year or so back) he saw Bette on the TV and mumbled "Whore". So Bette got a reputation from her antics whether it was meant to be camp or not.

But Bette has the vocal chops to back it up. Sure, she played campy, sexy, and 'slutty' to a point, but none of these other performers can match the energy and range of Bette.

I think you guys need to go back and read that quote. She's not condemning every singer/performer who uses her sexuality. She's saying that it doesn't work for everyone and that Ariana Grande is actually a sweet young woman trying to exude a sexual energy she isn't really in possession of. She's saying, don't force it.

well.. unfortunately you cannot chose your relatives. He is a conservative republican too.

I've told him if he opens his mouth about Obama, politics, religion, etc I won't sit at his table.

You should have heard the explosion the morning of the previous presidential election. During the night I swapped out all his republican signs for democrat signs.

Ha. Brian, that's hilarious. My parents are dye-in-the-wool liberal Dems, but they live in a pretty conservative semi private neighborhood. In the 2008 election they regularly had their Obama lawn signs removed or vandalized.
