I hate it! It drives me crazy b/c the person using it is just saying that they do not know what the word means.
People use it in place of "very"

i use it as a joke. like if something impressed me i'd say..

"i was blown away. no dude you don't get it. i was literally blown away. all the way down 45th street."

but when people say it like the mean it, i just don't get it. if you pay attention when people talk sometimes you will pick up on a few more of these phrases people carelessly use.

I feel like 'literally' has unintentionally become one of those words that people use when they mean the opposite of what they're saying. You should technically be saying "I figuratively died" or "I figuratively have a six-pack from laughing," but whatever.

Irregardless is the one that sets my teeth on edge. there is regard, there is regardless, irregardless is a double negative which would make it regard and that is not what people mean!

I get really annoyed when people say "I could care less". That means that you like it! "I couldn't care less" is a phrase stating disapproval with nothing incorrect. I don't understand how people don't realize what they are saying.

Yeah, it's not a sudden thing, it's been used incorrectly for emphasis for YEARS by dumb people. My favourite misuse of 'literally' was in a review of Boeing-Boeing in the West End:

"Michelle Gomez ... literally had the audience rolling around in delirium".

Just today on "I Should Have Died," or whatever the hell it's called, some guy who's fallen into the Zambezi spots a crocodile 10 feet away and decides to swim toward him.

The narrator intones that the guy "was literally playing a game of Russian Roulette."

And I thought: You've got a gun and one bullet? Shoot the effing crocodile!
