Just watching the news report on the Hofstra student that the cops shot by mistake. Well, this happens pretty often. What if anything is done to compensate for this, as if anything can compensate. Do the cops say oh, we're sorry and that's it? Is there a huge money settlement? I always wonder what happens next when this occurs.

There is also an investigation -- pretty much whenever a death (or any shooting) happens at the hands of an officer. They need to find out whether it could have been avoided, or if it is just a horrible accident.

And yes, very often there is a huge settlement.

What I don't understand is that they are trained to, or used to be I think, to not shoot to kill at all times. It seems in a lot of cases cops could have shot these people in places that would injure as opposed to kill them.
