Saw this today and woof, what a train wreck! It was so unbelievably bad and stupid that by the final act it had firmly turned to camp.
For an action movie the first 45 minutes is very talky (apparently no one consulted Officer Lockstock and Little Sally on the script), and the actress who plays Channing's 11 year old daughter is SOOOOOOOOO grating and annoying that I was actively rooting for the bad guys to take her out.
Still, things pick up immensely when Foxx and Tatum join forces and start fighting the invaders. There is a spectacular car chase scene on the White House grounds, but these moments are far too fleeting.
The script is heavy-handed and the none of the characters ever make a logical decision. Like ever.
I don't know if Channing in a sweaty clothing and the camp ending were worth it, but it's one my friend and I will be referencing for weeks to come.

I didn't see Olympus Has Fallen, but they judging by the trailers they do feel like sister movies.
Surprisingly Maggie Gyllenhaal was, in a way, the worst part of the movie. She stuck out like a sore thumb for having TOO much class and dignity. If ever a role called for Olivia Wilde, this was it.

Production companies always release similar movies. Word leaked early that one company was doing something and the other company hired some awful writer to write something.
Happens all the time.

I noticed that Channing was an Executive Producer on it.
He'll make his money back.

Variety and Deadline are reporting the film as a flop, especially because it had a huge $150 mil budget, whereas THE HEAT only cost $40 mil (which it'll recoup opening weekend):
Variety: WHITE HOUSE DOWN Bombs, THE HEAT Sizzles

I don't know how to add multiple links, so here's Deadline:

The only reason I saw White House Down was because The Heat was sold out!
It was hot and I just wanted to get into the air conditioning!

Posted: 6/29/13 at 6:20pmI enjoyed Olympus has Fallen for its over the top opening sequence when they were attacking Washington and all the brainless but entertaining things that came after, something is putting me off about this one though.

Posted: 7/2/13 at 8:18amThis just got stupider and dumber and funnier as the film went on, film making by the numbers with advance plot points either pointed out or shown on screen, this was one hell of good time trashy movie.

'Loved that it's so bad it's good scene in which the Melissa Leo was doing the pledge of allegience while being beaten!'
When that moment started, I was like 'OH COME ON!' But Leo committed so hard to that moment that I ended up moved. (SPOILER) I was certain she was gonna die...so I was elated when she got out. I, too, thought OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN was the most fun movie I've seen this year.
