It looks like a sporting event - the kids yelling, chanting, giving thumbs-up to the cameras, on each other's shoulders...

I'd be very surprised if Ratzinger isn't it, BUT they did say his chances were clouded by the fact that his was, albeit briefly, a nazi youth.

My bet's on Ratzinger too.

I've never met my friend's fiance, but I don't think I like him. He's Italian-American and doesn't really go to church, but my friend said if the Pope is Italian (vs Polish or whatever), he'd probably go. How stupid is that. Sorry, just had to let that out.

I actually didn't realize that this would be such a big deal in the US. Has there always been this interest here? I remember when John Paul I and II were chosen, but I was back home in Central America. It was a huge deal.

It is pretty amazing how exciting the secrecy is. Please, God, let it be a moderate from outside Italy. Now is a time for inclusion in this religion, not more mainline retreats, especially with the whole world watching like never before...

I think it's such a big deal because there's never been this kind of news coverage for a Pope election. After all, round-the-clock news channels weren't around in 1976.
